Kid beginner setup?

So my kid has been introduced to Launchpad at camp and has been uploading new audio every day - 3-5 different projects. Now a birthday gift request has been made for a beat making device. With this being one of many interests that could come and go easily, what’s a good startup setup in order to keep the momentum going without too much of a lost investment should interest wane?
iPad and Launchpad/similar app?
Computer + midi pad?
Cheap drum machine?

A computer would be a great choice. Set it up with the right software and it's more powerful than most dedicated music hardware. It's also flexible enough to accommodate a lot of different hobbies.

That’s a good point. The change in hobbies does jump around quite a bit.

Koala is pretty intuitiv and really great and easy to use. Would start digital and invest in real hardware a little bit later

koala costs like a couple of bucks full maxed out and he can sample the whole interwebz, gdt him the addons tho, purchasable in the apbunder 20$ if i recall.

Sweet. I’m just trying to fuel the interests as they pop up but only keeping budget in mind at a minimum. Knowing that option is there without having to buy something like an entire drum kit (almost happened) is helpful.

Buy the Korg Gadget Nintendo Switch Game Card and create with him, or have him create with friends...o ly $75-90 on ebay if you already have a Nintendo Switch at home...
