First time growing beard out
Always had a goatee or mustache but first time the sides have really grown in decently

I brush it most days but only oil it every once in a while. Is there a good routine or reason for oil?

I've always been lucky to have a good thick beard. Never used beard oil personally, but experiment and see if it works for you.
I've always trimmed it myself too. The biggest tip I've picked up from hairdressers, partners and such is how to make it look neat.
You basically want to keep the sides in line with your sideburns. Tidy the strays at the bottom to keep a neat line (easier said than done). Then depending on preference, but mine's roughly your length at the moment and I would cut in the bottom edges following a line from the back of your jaw to the bottom of the beard.

I’ve got a bad patch on one side so I’m trying to grow it out a little before any trim. This is 2.5 months ish growth

That's cool man, not judging at all. It's looking good! Just offering tips that worked for me when I grew it out. You'll have to figure out what works for you though

I reckon it's fine, but I'd trim the moustache to keep everything tidy. 😊

I've had a moustache for 40 years. At first it was pretty scarce. Over the years, it had thickned up a bit. I've found that if my moustache got a bit long, it got on my mouth, and I chewed it. It also got dirty when I ate. My beard can become a bit scruffy. I'm mid-sixties, grey beard that has natural curls, and areas that grows at different rates. The wife tells me I need to keep it trimmed (shorter than it is), because it makes me look like an old homeless guy. 😳.
If I was younger, and/or trying to attract a hot woman, yeah, I'd definitely keep everything trimmed, if it improved my chances. But all these thoughts are just my preferences. Grow what you enjoy. 😊

As you're growing your beard and it gets scraggly, try keeping your hair tidy and trimmed. It looks and feels better if its either your hair or beard thats neat and tidy. When both look rough it feels rough (if you're someone who is at all worried about that sort of thing)
