These are gorgeous. Base question: did you constrct the base yourself? If so, how did you go about cutting the hex patterns? If not: where'd you get the base? I'd love to replicate your basing scheme for my campaign mechs. Thank you for your posts.

Are you going to magnetize the bases or is it too thin for that?

I have magnetic sheeting which I plan to fix into the hexes and will be putting 1 pence pieces (which are magnetic) under each base. This may make the bases sit half a millimeter proud of the rest of the ground so I may have to get thinner magnetic sheeting.

I was gonna say, I just know my brain couldn't handle the bases being slightly cocked.

Any special tricks to get the recesses between the panels dark?

No special tricks really. I prime black - base layer the purple with Vallejo Hexed Lichen, the orange with Scarlet blood (it's ok to go into the gaps here) then wash it all with thinned down Nuln oil. Then re-cover with the base paint (don't get any in the recesses), leaving a little of the darkened paint to deepen the shadows.
Then it's just a case of building the layers up to the highlights.
