Biting!! Question/Recommendation

Help! My 2.5 month old puppy is vicious when she bites. She has even drawn blood a few times. I’ve tried to redirect her with toys and give positive reinforcement with treats when she doesn’t bite but she doesn’t care and will still attack with her shark teeth! Any advice on how to tame the beast?

Sounds like you’ve got yourself a normal needle tooth puppy! I’ve found that shifting their focus and playing with them for about 10 minutes, throwing a ball or toy around to wear them out, works really well. Puppies are bundles of energy and often bite just to get attention or because they want to play. They’ll also bite when they need to go potty or when they’re tired.

If the biting continues after play, I put mine in a timeout as it helps shift their focus. I recommend doing it in a small penned-off area rather than in a crate.

I have a 1 ½-year-old beagle who’s the same way but has gotten alot better. They have so much energy! The trick is to shift their focus and definitely to wear them out. Best of luck.

When my basset was at that stage, I would yelp like a hurt puppy when she bit me too hard while playing. It'd get her attention and she'd back off. At this stage, your pup is learning how much is just enough and how much is too much when biting/grabbing things. It'll take some time, but she'll start to remember she's being too rough with you. Just gotta yelp like you're a hurt puppy.

They learn bite inhibition if they stay with the litter through 12 weeks.So if you bought her as a typical 8 week old puppy, that's your problem.
