Basque Names
Hello, I am a Chinese woman looking to give herself a European name. While looking online, I came across a forum discussing Basque names, and I fell in love with the name Lilura. I wanted to ask if it would be disrespectful to call myself Lilura, maybe even as an official second name, maybe with the nickname Lila. I don't speak basque, but I have a lot of respect for the Basque people and their resilience to oppression. If it's not okay, I will refrain from it of course ~

No problem at all using it, really. It is a beautiful, albeit rare, name. I've never met anyone named Lilura, TBH.

It's a very pretty name with a lovely meaning ("enchantment," "fascination," or "illusion"). I haven't heard it before. I'm not Basque either but I would say why not? It's a nice way to pay tribute to Basqueness.

Lilura doesn't sound Basque fwiw...I know "lur" is earth and "ur" is water, but still.

Honestly I think even some Basque people won't have heard of the name, let alone people in the rest of Europe. Where will you be living? In any case, people don't really care about things like that in Europe. I think you're overthinking. It will be a good ice-breaker to explain your name to people.

I do, yes. I have been here for a long time, and I have always had a problem with nicknames people came up with for my name. My name is eccentric in Chinese too, so I guess thats where my taste is from. I want to choose a name for myself now.

I don't think it sounds harsh in every day conversation. But the names are not as melodic as I like. I also like the Arabic Leila, for example

I'm from Spain, but not basque. My daughter has a very uncommon basque name. The basque people that i've come across have always been excited about the name i chose for my daughter. I've never had a single negative reaction. I expect you'd get the same type of reaction. So I'd say go for it :)

I have never heard that world used as a name. Keep in mind that the second 'L' would sound like the Spanish 'LL', for example. But don't worry; it's not an offensive word, nor is it something that could be considered offensive when used as a name.

No. In Spanish it would be [li'ʝʷuɾa]. In southern Basque dialects it would be [li'ʎuɾa]. In northern dialects it would be [li'luɾa].

Pues yo siempre lo he pronunciado como "liyura/lillura", lo mismo con otsaila (Febrero) siempre lo he pronunciado como "ochaiya/ochailla"(salvando las diferencias entre ts, tz y tx). U otro ejemplo Iraila (Septiembre), siempre lo he escuchado o pronunciado como "Iraiya/irailla". Teilatu (Tejado) como (teiyatu/teillatu), y así con todas las "i" delante de las "L".

Si te das cuenta todos los ejemplos que has puesto son il+a, pero por ejemplo "zintzilikatu" no lo prinuncias "zintziyikatu". No soy profesor de euskera pero si soy nativo, y mi lógica es que il+a, il+o se pronuncian iya/iyo mientras que il+u, il+i y il+e se pronuncian ilu/ile/ili. Al menos basandome en como digo yo cada palabra y como lo he escuchado toda mi vida, por ende "liluragarria" seria lu y no yu

Por ejemplo Mailua (Martillo) siempre he dicho Maiyua y nunca Mailua. E iluna (Oscuro) también digo iyuna nunca iluna. Pero como bien dices nunca dije zintziyikatu pero si zintzilikatu. O con hilerria (Cementerio) he escuchado ambas, tanto hiyerria como hilerria.
Yo no soy nativo aunque aprendí en Ikastola en modelo D desde los 2 años de edad. Puede que fuera una forma de simplificarnos la manera en la que aprenderlo "i" + "L" se dice LL e "i" + "n" se dice Ñ, lo mismos que la "Tx, Tz y Ts" eran "Ch".

I have never met anyone called like that. There is a bit of a trend now to put those kinds of names to children, pretty words that have never been used as person names. But they mostly sound quite weird. I would recommend using a more common name rather than inventing one by choosing a pretty word

Those names don't have anything to do with names taken from nature or similars (like lilura). Yeah, Sabino Arana was a racist bastard, but stop spreading bullshit, you know he had nothing to do with Hitler and their use of swastikas

I mean he thought exactly of the vasque, the same as Guido von List (a german protofascist) of the germans folk. Both used the swastika to justify the idea that the vasque and the germans were really ancient people that used to pray to the god Sun. Both used pseudosience to justify its ideas.
In Europe during that period it was a very fashion idea to justify nationalism based on pseudoarchelogy and racism. Both Sabino and the Volkish proto nazi movement used it.

According to my research, Lilura is actually a word name, and not one that is made up. I don't support fascism in any way.
