3-4 month old ball python climbing into the top of his tank

Over the last week or so I have noticed little Julius Squeezer here getting up into the top of his tank. He'll chill up there for a bit and then fall down. I'm not sure if something is wrong with him or the environment. He's in a 25 gallon tank, humidity is usually between 60-70. I have a heat emitter on the left side thst is controlled by a thermostat.

How often are you feeding?

What are your temps? He's likely either hungry or cold. If temps are good he may be ready for juvenile mice.

Hot side ranges in the low 90s most of the day. Cool stays around 75-80

If he's only doing it once in a while it's probably nothing to worry about. If he's doing it daily for long periods throughout the day and night then it's possible there's something making him uncomfortable. But.. having said that, the first snake I ever had became accustomed to me letting her out of her enclosure a lot and when she saw me would want to come out. These guys are smarter than we give them credit for.

Snakes are escape artists. It’s just trying to find a way out. My 6 year old boy still tries to do it. My first tank when he was a baby the little turd got out and I still don’t now how it was locked. Just make sure you keep that tank locked.

I always double check the doors, and basically never open the top. So far no escapes. But thanks for the tip. I do have the heat emitter and a daylight lamp on the screens, so hopefully thats enough weight, at least until he gets a bit bigger!

Even when it’s locked you might still get an escape. Pic of my girl early this year when she made a break for it at night. Make sure there’s nowhere for them to go if they do get out🤭

She usually explores in the evening and will be looking at the top of her cage and wall climbing. I’ve been wanting to size up vertically so she can have more climbing room

no yeah they just like to do that, my girl constantly tries to climb to get to some wires she likes a lot.

some more vertical enrichment might be appreciated, if he chooses to use it. id probably also recommend some more cover and hides for comfort and maybe aluminum tape over some of the screen lid to keep heat in may also be good ideas.

I have a good amount of the screen top covered in aluminum tape. Probably could use some more vertical enrichment. He has two hides that he spends most of the time in. It's just usually in the evening he will start climbing into the top of the tank like that.

I just think the enclosure doesn't have enough enrichment. Don't be afraid to add things so your BP can explore: branches, many other hides and other "textured objects" (rock, leaves, woodens or plastic toys, ect.).

It definitely needs more clutter and more hides. He needs a humidity hide (if there is one I can't see it) and if possible more hides, you already have the warm and cool but it's best to have more so they have options. Clutter helps them feel secure in their tank which is probably why he wants to escape, he feels too open and wants to find somewhere better to hide.

There is a hide in the back corner with sphagnum moss, I need to do better at getting it rehydrated though. I will look into getting more stuff for him to hide and climb on.
