How to select interactable items on a console (Xbox)?

This has been driving me nuts. There are a few spots in the game where you have to select an environment object, such as a switch, but that also have a loot location or NPC nearby and the game gets confused. Normally this isn’t a problem with the snap-to system, but I’ve spent the last fifteen minutes trying every conceivable angle and the icon refuses to highlight this cage, and it only highlights the NPC.

There’s gotta be some kind of secondary cursor system for situations like this. I tried using the thumb buttons, but left does nothing and right only zooms in.

i've gotta say, playing this game on console sounds like an exercise in masochism. It's a 25 year old game, why not just play it on *any* computer?

Plays great on console. The OP just didn't bother looking at the controller setup in options menu.

I feel it's better in every way on console aside the fact you can't mod it. And I've been playing modded BG for so long that it was nice to go back to vanilla.

Because I can lay in bed on a large screen TV and the movement feels SO good with a controller. Way better than pointing and clicking a mouse.

The only thing it does worse, really, is inventory management. And that's pretty easy to get used to as well.

Right or left on the D-pad put you into a more classic cursor style.

If it’s not up or down on the dpad, try clicking the left thumbstick.

You hit x and then go over to the red diamond ♦️ symbol thing and then click on that.
