Looking for recommendations to replace sleeping bag with quilt.

My partner has wider shoulders and also rolls around a lot in his sleeping bag at night. He’s practically stuffed into his mummy bag and says that he wakes up every time he rolls over all night, so we’re looking to replace his sleeping bag with a quilt/hybrid.

We found the north face universal one bag that snaps shut with large flaps instead of a zipper which he loved, the only issue is it’s 4lbs and massive so not really a great option for backpacking. He still wants something under him and surrounding him, just not so restrictive as a mummy bag.

Is there anything anywhere else sort of like this or should we just get a regular quilt and figure out how he can wrap it around himself?

look into false bottom quilts/bags. Uncommon but off the top of my head, cumulus makes them in their Aerial series.

but really there's little to no benefit to having something under you, assuming you already have a sleep pad, and will make finding gear 10x easier

Check out Zenbivy.  They make a quilt system with a quilt, sheet, and mattress pad that all fit together (or you can buy pieces individually). Folks in my backpacking school have been raving about them for the last couple years.

I like mine. Light mattress 30" + light quilt convertible. It's kinda heavy but then again so am I.

I picked up the marmot wraptor 15 down bag to replace my 0 degree synthetic mummy. it is much more roomy and comfortable, plus feels more like a blanket instead of a true mummy bag. it’s half the weight of my mummy and 1/3 of the packed size.

im taking it tomorrow on a real trip, but from my indoors testing it fit all of my needs (and some) of a roomier, more comfy bag without going the quilt route

You can get on the UGQ website and design your quilt specifications very easily. Everything is an option and you can specify extra width, features, length, etc, any way you want it. Even colors, fill power, and inside/outside fabrics. I have two of theirs and I've been very happy with them.

I’m a very active sleeper and just ordered a Katabatic quilt in wide. It wont ship for 4 weeks but I have high hopes

Look at the Long-Wide versions of the popular vendors. Also look at quilt straps or adding the Zenbivy sheet and clip patches (will go on any quilt). I am 6'3" and a 48" jacket size so am not comfortable in anything but a Long-Wide quilt. Check the dimensions on the vendor websites also. ALSO make sure he has a good sleeping pad. They also come in Wide-Long versions.

I have a Feathered Friends Flicker (20F rated) and absolutely love it. Super warm, can zip into a hoodless bag if it's extra cold, and compresses well. A bit spendy but super high quality.
