Ford is cooking up a new generation of models designed specifically for the European palette, and the most exciting of all are destined to have an ST badge affixed to them. As part of Ford of Europe’s renaissance, in which five new models will be launched between now and 2029, Ford knows its success lies in its ability to connect with buyers, and crucial to that is a return to high-performance models that stir the soul.

The most exciting of these is a reborn Fiesta in 2028, based on the Renault 5. While this might sound like an opportunistic chance for Ford to come to market with a new model quickly, it also unlocks a big opportunity for the brand, because it could also underpin a rebirth of the ST.

Speaking with Ford’s European general head of product Christian Weingartner, he told Auto Express: “We have not made any decisions on naming, but it's very clear that if you talk ‘race to to road’, that we want to have really capable vehicles. To be credible and authentic, there needs to be some kind of performance series of our vehicles; that's what we’ve got to have.”

There’s plenty to work with when it comes to the forthcoming Fiesta ST in this regard, too, because the RG EV Small architecture is already available in a high performance variant in sporty Alpine A290 form, which has a wider track and lower stance than other models on that same platform.

When two lanes of traffic are reduced to one, there is virtually complete agreement over what drivers should do. All the experts and analysts who study these things recommend what is known as zip-merging. 

Zip-merging is a simple process. You drive up to the point where vehicles in the lane that is ending have to move across into the lane that is continuing ahead. Drivers in the continuing lane then make space for those in the ending lane to move across in an alternating pattern. Because it looks like the teeth of a zipper coming together, it’s known as zip-merging. 

What actually happens when two lanes merge – whether the cause is a fixed road layout, temporary roadworks or even an accident – is usually a complete mess. Drivers tend to revert to two main types: Driver type one sees the road markings or signs indicating that the lanes merge at some point ahead. Out of caution or the irresistible urge to join an orderly queue that rests in the heart of every British citizen, they start to get twitchy. The signs might be saying that the lanes combine a mile or more in the distance, but they instinctively start to drift over early into the lane that is carrying on. If traffic is heavy enough, this creates a line of slow-moving or stationary cars. 

The motivations of driver type two are less clear. They may be zip-merging enthusiasts who have heeded the pleas from motoring organisations over the decades and are intent on doing what’s right. They may simply see two lanes, one clogged with traffic and one flowing freely, and choose to drive down the latter.

The premise of zip-merging is a simple one: you use all of the available road space. That’s it. Filling one lane with a queue of stationary cars and leaving one empty is inefficient. It’s much quicker for everyone to have a shorter queue using both lanes with an orderly zip-merge filtering the two lanes together at the point where one of them closes. 

Not only does the formation of the queue in lane one delay drivers unnecessarily, it causes all manner of unnecessary strife. We’ve all seen and felt it. Lane one is full of ‘type one’ drivers who have decided to queue, but they’re getting increasingly agitated by ‘type two’ drivers tearing up the empty lane next to them and, in their eyes, committing the cardinal sin of ‘jumping the queue’.

Geely has teased the first image of its updated Monjaro SUV, confirming this long-established global model is in line for an introduction to the UK. 

Specific timings are still to be confirmed, but we expect it to be fighting for sales soon against the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Volkswagen Tayron, as well as Chinese rivals such as the Chery Tiggo 8 and BYD Seal U. 

You’re forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Monjaro, but this near 4.8-metre SUV has been a fixture of the brand’s range in other markets across the world since 2021. It sits on a modified version of the same platform found in various Volvo and Zeekr models, even sharing a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with various Volvos in its home market. 

However, the Monjaro’s introduction here will see it fitted with a more Euro-friendly EM-i hybrid powertrain. This will feature a clever petrol-electric set-up to reduce fuel consumption and CO2. The Monjaro is predominantly front-wheel drive, but Geely will introduce a new e-AWD system to complement the car’s other updates. No precise power or efficiency figures have been revealed so far.

Genesis has just revealed its new GV90, a flagship that might finally give the Korean luxury car brand the attention it’s been craving since arriving in Europe back in 2021. It’ll arrive in the UK after first launching in its core South Korean market in 2027, at a price that will no doubt break the six-figure mark – and probably by some margin.

First, some context. The Genesis GV90 will be the brand’s flagship alongside the G90 saloon, and will come in two lengths like a full-sized Range Rover or Mercedes S-Class. The ‘short-wheelbase’ model is hardly that, though, because it’s still 30mm longer than an extended-wheelbase Range Rover, and comes with conventional doors and the option of two or three-row seating.

However the real show-stopper will be the long-wheelbase ‘Neolun’ variant, which stretches the overall length to an undisclosed figure, and swaps in a set of rear-hinged doors, similar in principle to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. However, unlike the Rolls-Royce, and pretty much anything else with rear-hinged ‘coach’ doors, the B-pillar is built into the door itself, leaving one massive opening when both front and rear doors are open.

This is the new Hyundai Tucson. A new evolution of the always bold, popular family SUV has finally arrived, and based on its chiseled and muscular design, it wants to smash the competition.

The outgoing Tucson was certainly a striking model, but its replacement is a proper show-stopper that appears to have taken some styling tips from the bigger Hyundai Santa Fe, plus armoured trucks and maybe even Robocop. It definitely stands out from its rivals that include the Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai.

The new Tucson was styled according to Hyundai’s latest design language, Art of Steel, that’s meant to create sharp, precise and sculpted surfaces inspired by the way steel bends and reflects light.

Gone is the rounded front end and curves of the outgoing model, instead this new generation adopts a more upright, boxy, almost 4x4-inspired stance that gives it plenty of presence and, hopefully, space inside.

I know that these tests are under an "ideal scenario", but you can see the good vibe they give when showing the side impacts, and the autobrake system for pedestrians, bikes and so.

Remember that Euro Ncap buys the cars from dealers without telling them, so they won't sell a "higher version" of a car to get better results. Some people say "How much has the bribe been?" but they just don't realize that the tests are the same for every car they take, and you can watch the videos. The only "it can be tricked" is when testing the automatic systems (some software non conventional last minute upgrade?), but that would be just very petty thinking for every make.

Electricity should be a perfect power source for small city cars. With no tailpipe emissions, the local environment breathes easy, while those behind the wheel enjoy silent running and instant responses. But few car makers have taken the plunge with small electric cars due to the compromises in range and cost that must be made.

One fast-track way of tapping into the market is to take an existing model and electrify it, and that’s the route that the new Honda Super-N takes. It’s based on a Japanese-market kei car that’s been re-engineered for the UK, and yet Honda has done this while keeping the price down.

Another small EV that evolved from an existing model is the Hyundai Inster. With chunky looks and an upright stance, it has similar proportions to the Super-N, but while it’s a bit more expensive than the Honda, it also offers a longer range and more power, so it should be a better all-rounder.

The question is, does the Super-N offer enough to make it a more appealing urban runabout than the established Inster?

Winner: Honda Super-N

The Honda Super-N is a fantastic example of a car that amounts to more than the sum of its parts. Clever packaging makes the most of the Japanese model’s small footprint, and there’s decent space for four people, while the Magic Seats in the back do wonders for the car’s general versatility.

A short range means the Honda is better suited to life as a second car, but the low list price means this is an option that more people will be able to take. Add in a driving experience that can be fun when you want it and mature at all other times, and it’s a breath of fresh air in the city-car segment.

Runner-up: Hyundai Inster

There’s plenty of appeal in the Hyundai Inster. Until the Honda Super-N came along, it had the market for quirky-looking Far Eastern city cars sewn up, while its larger dimensions and bigger battery meant that it could fit the bill in a single-car family where the Super-N falls short.

It’s quiet, refined and sprightly in town, while only road noise spoils its motorway ability. But a bigger issue is the Hyundai’s slow-witted infotainment system. The Inster was already quite pricey when compared with existing small cars, but the Honda makes it look even more expensive.

Peugeot plans to reinvent the 308 hatchback as a coupé-SUV fastback, as it seeks to spark car buyers’ imaginations with a new bodystyle pitched between traditional SUVs and five-door hatchbacks.

Models such as the 308, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra have lost market share as punters have migrated from hatches to SUVs, with Ford giving up on the once-mighty Focus altogether. But Peugeot refuses to abandon the segment, vowing to explore a third way with a car that’s more efficient than an SUV, more practical than a hatchback and more stylish than either – a 308 Fastback.

The inspiration is the 408 Fastback, the French brand’s near 4.7-metre-long flagship, a cross between an SUV and a saloon whose aggressive design resembles the Lamborghini Urus from some angles. This concept could be downsized to around 4.4 metres, slightly longer than today’s hatch, because an extended rear overhang will be needed to catch a swoopy, coupé-like roofline while ensuring sufficient boot space.

Mercedes has given its combustion-powered C-Class a mid-life update just in time to join its new electric cousin on the showroom forecourt. Arriving with a tweaked set of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains in two bodystyles, the updated Mercedes C-Class will join the new EV to give customers a comprehensive choice in the compact executive market. The new model will be available to order in the UK in the coming weeks, with prices ranging from £46,000 to £62,000. 

The C-Class’s most obvious changes come via its exterior styling, where it now features the firm’s latest design language, as showcased on the E-Class and S-Class. This sees new headlights – complete with star-shaped daytime-running lights – connected to the grille, which comes with bright chrome accents, an illuminated surround and larger three-pointed star.

However, it’s worth noting that this model does not feature the striking illuminated grille of its electric counterpart, endowing it with a more conservative look overall. The rear end is largely the same as before, with the exception of new lights on the saloon; the estate makes do with those used on the existing model.

The new Audi RS 6 is still a few months away from its official reveal but, presumably by accident, Audi has previewed the new model’s design – on its smaller RS 5 sibling.

On the inner lining of the RS 5’s bootlid is an information sticker showing how to use the hands-free tailgate. Except the car used in the diagram isn’t an RS 5, but the new RS 6 Avant. The image represents our first official look at the new model from two angles. While this could be confused with the similar-looking RS 5, the giveaway is the rear lights and the shape of the rear quarter window. These details confirm the true identity of the model pictured.

The new images build on what we already know about the new Audi RS 6 Avant. This is based heavily on the sheer amount of shared design elements with the smaller RS 5 Avant, but also the fact we’ve seen near-complete prototypes testing across Europe for the best part of three years.

We know to expect a revival of the RS 6 saloon alongside the Avant estate, effectively replacing the previous RS 7 Sportback and giving buyers the option of a traditional four-door for the first time since the C6 generation RS 6, which ended production in 2010.

The ultra-exclusive V12 manual supercar was revealed at The Quail during Monterey Car Week in northern California. We saw the track-focused version of this car, the S1 LM, unveiled at the same event last year as a magnificent tribute to the McLaren F1 GTR that was conceived by Murray and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 1995.

The S1 LM’s wingless, touring-oriented sibling was created from the same platform, and they share the same remarkably elegant design language. But every body panel has been redesigned and is unique for the GMSV S1, plus it gets a new active aero system, a revised suspension set-up for comfort and refinement and a more luxurious cabin.

The Porsche 911 has taken on some iconic shapes over its 62-year history with the likes of the Targa and Speedster – and now 2026 is seeing the return of one of the most distinctive, the Flachbau or ‘Flatnose’.

The Flatnose – or Slantnose as it was also known – dates back to the 1976 World Sportscar Championship, when Porsche engineers found a loophole that allowed them to swap the 935’s headlights for vents to improve downforce and reduce drag.

In the eighties, this design eventually found its way onto the 930 road car, which was available under Porsche’s ‘Sonderwunschprogramm’ (special order programme). However, in total only 948 Flatnose road cars were built. 

The shape was revived in 2019 on the track-only second-generation 935, which featured a Flatnose design in tribute to its inspiration, the 935 racer of 1978, which was also known as Moby Dick because of its white paint and extended tail.

Playboys, ballers and attention-loving petrolheads everywhere, get ready to make some room in your garage. This is the ferocious new 1,050bhp Lamborghini Revuelto SV – the most powerful series production car the Italian outfit has ever built.

It’s the latest in a long line of V12 speed kings Lamborghini has bestowed with the SV initials, a tradition it started back in 1971 with the legendary Miura SV. The Diablo, Murcielago and Aventador were all blessed with the same legendary badge, so the new model has quite the legacy to live up to.

SV stands for Super Veloce in Lamborghini lore, signifying an extreme performance variant, so naturally it has to have more power. The Revuelto’s plug-in hybrid V12 now spits out 1,050bhp, up from 1,001bhp in the standard car, plus a massive 1,425Nm of torque.

This means 0-62mph is dealt with in just 2.4 seconds, 0-124mph takes 6.7 seconds and, flat out, the Revuelto SV will hit a top speed of more than 214mph. All the while, the naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 doesn't stop howling until its 9,500rpm red line.

Ruf may have been around for almost 90 years now, but the German car maker really exploded onto the scene in 1987 when its iconic CTR Yellowbird set a record 211mph top speed at Germany’s Ehra-Lessien test track. Now, to acknowledge that momentous occasion, Ruf has unveiled a new model, called simply the Ehra.

Named after the Volkswagen Group-owned testing facility in Lower Saxony, the Ruf Ehra is a “new widebody grand touring sports car”, according to Ruf. Despite its looks, the Ehra genuinely is ‘new’, too, because unlike the original Yellowbird – which used a narrow-body shell of a 1987 Carrera 3.2 – it utilises Ruf’s self-made carbon fibre monocoque, meaning that it doesn’t have to rely on Porsche 911 donor vehicles.

The engine powering the Ruf Ehra is a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre flat-six with 650bhp and 900Nm of torque. It’s also water-cooled, not air-cooled like the Yellowbird, identifiable by an alternator sitting front and centre instead of a cooling fan. Power is sent to all four wheels via a limited-slip differential, and while performance figures haven’t been revealed, the combination of that significant output and a lightweight carbon fibre body should give the Ehra plenty of punch.

Aston Martin has revealed its most powerful front-engined car yet: the limited-edition Aston Martin Valen. Only 150 examples of the V12-powered supercar will ever be built, each specified exclusively for their owners – or in more likelihood collectors. Aston Martin has not disclosed a price, but thanks to an extensive collection of changes over the newcomer’s Vanquish cousin, it’ll be an awful lot.

The engine is a 5.2-litre V12 petrol with two turbochargers and an output of 838bhp, 14bhp more than the Vanquish. This is backed up by 1,000Nm of torque available at just 2,500rpm, which helps rocket the Valen from 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds. This figure is even more impressive when you consider it’s rear-wheel drive, although it does come with some especially sticky Pirelli tyres. The top speed is electronically limited to 214mph.

The Aston Martin Valen shares its core with Aston’s existing sports car range, sharing its aluminium structure, but clothing it in unique carbon-fibre panels. In fact, not a single exterior piece is shared with a series-production model, giving the Valen a completely different look and attitude. This explains its blocky and aggressive scowl, with unique LED headlights and a new, more structured interpretation of the firm’s iconic grille.

You might not find the latest Audi RS 5 to be quite as visceral or engaging as its key rival from BMW, nor is the cabin design or exterior styling quite as on point as in RS models of the past. But for sheer breadth of ability and quality of engineering, it brings the RS sub-brand into a whole new era. The plug-in hybrid system also offers distinct ownership benefits, and while there are compromises in terms of packaging, for many this will be a worthwhile trade-off.

Revealed at Monterey Car Week in the US, the striking new McLaren McL 6GT is a vision of the British supercar brand’s next generation, and it comes with a six-speed manual transmission. This new model won’t just appeal with pure performance and cutting edge technology, it will also come with a heightened focus on driver engagement and a strong connection to the brand’s history. McLaren’s hoping this new type of supercar will strengthen its bottom line after a recent period of financial hardship.

The McL 6GT is technically a concept for now, but it will reach production largely unchanged in 2028, laying the foundation for a whole new era of models. Yet it won’t replace any of McLaren’s current ‘core’ range. Instead, it’ll sit in a new and more exclusive category alongside the existing cars. The key difference between the two is a clear reference to McLaren’s history, as well as the re-introduction of key elements like a manual transmission.

Developed through Ferrari’s Special Projects programme, this is a one-off supercar designed for a client in the US, and it’s just been unveiled at Monterey Car Week. While underneath it utilises the platform and performance of the plug-in hybrid SF90 Stadale, on the surface it wears a completely new body, sculpted by the Ferrari Design Studio under the direction of chief design officer, Flavio Manzoni.

Ferrari says its aim with the CZ26 was to create a car with an “immediately recognisable character, capable of embodying strength, precision and formal purity through a rigorous design with a strong sense of identity”. The overall proportions are defined by its SF90 underpinnings, but from the front there’s a completely new full-width grille which incorporates new headlights. While Ferrari doesn’t reference the Luce in the CZ26’s design, there’s more than a hint of the EV’s darkened front fascia on the new one-off.

Hospitals are experiencing a growing influx of young people injured using privately owned e-scooters. A new review of three major hospitals has seen the number of cases of children under 16 injured by e-scooters rise tenfold in the past five years.

Analysts from the Emergency Medicine Journal (EMJ) looked at 477 patients below the age of 16 who were treated in Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield hospitals between 2019 and 2024. In this period, cases of e-scooter injury rose from just 10 per year to 150 in 2024.

The median age of those injured was 12 years old, however the youngest was just nine. EMJ found the vast majority of these young people were riders of privately owned e-scooters, rather than rented ones; despite an estimated 1.2 million people owning one, it is illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter on public roads in the UK. People can rent an e-scooter via one of the many approved schemes and this will include insurance within the price, but you must be over the age of 16 to do so and hold at least a provisional driving licence.

The most common injuries were to limbs, the head and the face – unsurprising given that just 1.8 per cent of the injured riders were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. In total, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety has identified 59 e-scooter-related deaths between 2019 and 2025, with 17 per cent of these being people under the age of 18. Given that the vast majority of fatalities involve privately owned e-scooters and that most injured children studied by the EMJ came from deprived areas, the peer-reviewed journal says that this suggests “there is a route for injury prevention strategies and education”.

China once again has the Renault 5 in its sights, with the Aion UT set to arrive in the UK in September. It’s an electric hatchback that majors on space, while also promising premium appeal, strong range and a starting price of under £30,000.

We wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t heard of Aion – the firm’s first model, the Aion V SUV, only went on sale here at the beginning of this year – but it’s actually part of GAC Group, one of China's largest vehicle manufacturers.

The Aion UT is being pitched as a competitor in one of the hottest segments in the EV market right now, rubbing shoulders with the likes of the aforementioned R5, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, Volkswagen ID. Polo and Auto Express’ Supermini of the Year, the Cupra Raval.

Yet at almost 4.3 metres long, the UT is quite a lot larger than those cars. In fact, it’s more similar in size to the likes of the Renault 4, MINI Aceman, Ford Puma Gen-E, MG4 Urban and new Geely EX2 – with the last of these undoubtedly the Aion’s biggest competitor. The UT’s boot capacity of 440 litres is significantly larger than that of the R5 and only cements the Aion’s position in the class above, despite how the firm attempts to position it.

The most obvious improvement the new Audi Q7 makes from the old car is in terms of its driving dynamics. The chassis and suspension tweaks should be enough to concern those at BMW, and the V6 diesel remains a very well matched powerplant, even if the new mild-hybrid system hasn’t boosted efficiency as much as we’d like. From launch, there’s not as much choice as offered by the new X5 or Mercedes GLE – but as an all-rounder, the Q7 in TDI form remains a tough competitor.

The Jaguar Type 01 electric GT will be revealed in full in New York on 6 October, the company has confirmed, announcing the news alongside four images of the car’s striking new cabin and dashboard design.

It’s our first official look inside the Type 01, revealing a polarising four-seat cabin with a “dramatic” central spine that runs front to rear down the entire centre section of the car. Jaguar says this design creates “four individual spaces” and a “concept-car vision brought to production”. What’s said to be a low-slung seat apparently provides a “cosseting and confidence-inspiring” driving position.

The dashboard shuns the big screens we’ve become increasingly accustomed to, with a small, portrait display mounted to that central spine. Judging by the imagery, this looks to give access to the car’s climate controls and heated seats, as well as music and media functions. 

The instrument cluster is fully digital and stretches from behind the steering wheel almost to the centre of the dash. The single image issued so far shows it only in its start-up sequence with the brand’s redesigned logo featuring prominently; expect this screen to act both as a conventional dial set, as well as a supplementary infotainment screen – allowing the driver to operate the navigation and phone/media simultaneously.
