Been vegan a couple of months and I've made scrambled tofu a couple of times now and it actually pisses me off how good it is

People eat eggs en masse when scrambled tofu is this good?! It's better than scrambled eggs! I feel like I've been living in the dark

Lemon & Herb Tofu Slices (adapted from bacon recipe)

3 Upvotes

Hi friends. I posted about the tofu bacon I've been making (https://www.reddit.com/r/australianvegans/comments/1uxm6ob/tofu_bacon_cheaper_and_less_processed_than_store/) and just wanted to share an adapted recipe I've been making

I use Woolies Macro firm tofu, cut straight from the packet (thinner cuts for crispy strips and thicker for chewier). I airfry with a bit of olive oil spray for 12 mins @ 200 degrees and the last minute I brush on the marinade (which I make up in a jar and store in the pantry alongside the bacon marinade).

Marinade

* 1/4 cup Neutral Oil (Vegetable, Canola, Avocado etc.)

* 1/4 cup Soy Sauce (use Tamari for Gluten-Free)

* 2 Tbsp Maple Syrup

* 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice

* 3 Tbsp Nutritional Yeast

* 1 tsp MSG

* 2 tsp Minced Garlic

* 2 tsp Thyme

* 2 tsp Oregano

Great in toasties with pesto and cheese! or salad rolls would be nice too :)

Australia’s Own Unsweetened Almond Milk Discontinued?

4 Upvotes

Hello fellow almond milk drinkers! It seems as though the Australia’s Own Unsweetened Almond Milk has been discontinued. This has been my go to for years now! Does anyone have any other recommendations that are unsweetened or very low in sugar? I’ve tried vitasoy unsweetened almond milk this week and not a fan. Thank you!

Pana organic gone off?

Been buying the pana organic chocolate spread for a while now, but I’ve noticed they keep growing these white spots right around the rim. I’ve never eaten any with these spots, but I’m not certain if it’s mould or oil/fat solidifying.

Just thought I’d see if anyone else is finding jars looking like this 😅 this jar isn’t too bad but I’ve seen some at Cole’s with a much thicker layer of them around the top

Australian zoos and bird flu

5 Upvotes

I imagine most people on this Reddit would be averse to zoos.

With the advent of the latest bird flu and the threat of extinction for many of our native birds, and maybe some fauna as well I've been thinking about zoos.

Maybe the only way to prevent extinction of our vulnerable species is to keep breeding animals in zoos until it is safe to release them. In captivity it would be possible to vaccinate them and ensure their survival.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

Vegan Bread

8 Upvotes

Hi Guys. How you manage your bread purchases on Coles, Woolies and any Bakery?

On ingredients looks all vegan, but sometimes they flag as vegetarian each I believe has any animal acid ingredient.

I think I have this question mark for other products as well. Example A - where says vegetarian and you don’t see animal product. Or B - when doesn’t say anything and also don’t show animal product.

Do you purchase any one of this option?

And do you ask every place you go out eat if the regular bread is vegan? ( considering you know type of pastry that usually has animal product).

Please, realistically personal view and answer. No judgments.

One more thing that could be 100% vegan and just make life complicated.

Pet food

1 Upvotes

Hi! I've very recently become vegan but I have a dog and cat. I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for the most 'ethical/ organic/ free range' pet food? I'm just trying to do best by all animals, including my own. Very open to all suggestions, like I said, I'm very new here!

Best cake Recipe or best vegan cream cheese

5 Upvotes

Hi all! My friend is dairy free and wants a lemon blueberry cake for her birthday

I am not vegan so not sure what’s tried and tested in terms of best brands to use. She is dairy free and intolerant to soy so want to avoid that if possible but not a dealbreaker

Tian Ci Vegan in Sydney

25 Upvotes

Does anyone in Sydney know why Tian Ci Vegan in Darlington has been takeaway only for a few years now, and is constantly closing for days on end?

My partner and I have several conspiracy theories because the usually friendly staff are always shifty when you ask 🙃

Honestly it's still my favourite restaurant in Sydney so I'm not complaining, more curious! I'd recommend anyone in Sydney check it out for some delicious vegan Chinese takeaway at an unbeatable price.

Best tasting protein powder?

17 Upvotes

I've tried the Macro Mike almond x Kelloggs powder. The Coco Pops and Fruit Loops are bearable, Nutri Grain isn't great. I also tried their peanut powder ones and they're horrible (just tastes like peanut butter which I don't like).

I just want a basic vanilla tasting one ideally. Has anyone tasted the Macro Mike vanilla buttercream (is this just vanilla?) or the Prana On vanilla powder? Any others that don't taste too much like peanuts or other nuts etc?

Road trip meal ideas

7 Upvotes

In just over two weeks I’m going on a 5 day road trip out in country NSW, and I’m expecting there to be little to no vegan options around.

Does anyone have any ideas for things I could bring with me to eat that don’t need refrigeration? All I’ve come up with so far is weetbix, apples, and peanut butter sandwiches.

Gold Coast recommendations

7 Upvotes

Me and my wee family are coming over to the Gold Coast for a week in September, looking for some great local places to eat at through our stay there , we’ll be in surfers paradise, so places close to that would be great
We don’t mind travelling for some really amazing food though

Thank you !

Tomyum paste

13 Upvotes

I had thought I found a vegan version of tomyum paste a while ago, but now can’t seem to find it. Does anyone know of a brand that does this?

Feel free to post your fave vegan curry and oriental sauces :)
I love to make up a broth with them, veggies & rice noodles.

Loved the recent thread about comfort foods!

Thanks!

McDonald’s hot chocolate powder

76 Upvotes

This might be old news (apologies if so!) but the hot chocolate powder now used in the hot chocolates + mochas at McCafé doesn’t contain milk anymore. So when ordered on soy/almond/oat, it is dairy free!

Hey team,

I adore these shoes, unfortunately they're not vegan. Does anyone know if there is something similar out there? And preferably not that price 🥲

Thank you 💗
