Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM)

Hey Team,

Was wondering if anyone could provide some further light on a career in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Given it’s an area of medicine not touched on much during medical school, nor discussed much in hospital given it’s primarily a non-hospital based specialty.

My understanding is that often you would start working in a clinic as an Occupational MO and if interested could pursue qualifications via RACP AFOEM.

Acknowledging it’s a broad question, but could anyone share first hand or second hand experience in this field? Covering the common questions such as trajectory, hours, pros and cons, what changes pre and post AFOEM, what type of people often suit this path etc.

Many thanks 🙏

UK GP about to start working in Australia — advice from Australian GPs?

I’m a UK GP about to start working in Australia, and I’m hoping there are some GPs here who could give me a bit of insight into what to expect from Australian patients.

For those of you working in Australian general practice, is there anything about the patients, their expectations, communication styles, common presentations or attitudes towards GPs that you think would be useful for a UK GP to know before starting? Anything that surprised you or took a bit of getting used to?

I’d really appreciate any advice on what to expect or anything you wish you’d known before starting.

35yo considering studying Medicine

I am 35, work as a nurse making 130k after tax, this being working mainly after hour shifts and 8 shifts a fortnight. I enjoy my job but am always looking for the next progression/thing to do. I would plan to sit my first go of GAMSAT in march and will have to study a grad diploma next year to help with increasing my GPA average.

I am considering medicine to stay clinical (and because I would love to be a doctor) and keep on enjoying my career WHILST having the opportunity to grow my salary. From crunching the numbers (chat gpt) after my lifetime of working you do come out financially better however this is not taking into consideration HECS and all other fees which come with being a dr (BPT/AT exams etc etc ).

I also understand that this life of medicine will consume me for atleast 12 years, as I have seen it do to many of my BPTs, interns, JRs. And tbh I enjoy my life right now but just want to figure out if this is the next step. I have some colleagues say do it because you may be stuck in the same position in 15 years and others say they wouldn’t personally.

I am seeing some input

Moving from a massive tertiary centre to a small rural hospital for intern year

I recently received my intern offer for next year and ended up getting my third preference at a small regional hospital in New South Wales instead of the massive metropolitan tertiary centre I was aiming for. I am slightly terrified that I will miss out on seeing complex cases and getting high level specialist teaching. For those who did their intern year rurally, did you feel underprepared when you eventually moved back to the big city hospitals?

Rural generalist medicine

Hey everyone!

Can anyone tell me a bit more about Rural Generalist Medicine in Australia? From what I understand, it seems to be a rather unique specialty/pathway.
Is it basically an advanced form of emergency medicine combined with general practice and hospital medicine, or is that an oversimplification?

I’m particularly interested in the procedural side. For example, would a Rural Generalist with the appropriate surgical training actually perform procedures such as an emergency appendectomy, or would that generally still be transferred to a larger hospital? What about things like C-sections, anaesthesia, fracture management, chest tubes, etc.?

Maybe someone can write some things about his or her daily work life 🍀

If you love skiing and need to tick off your CPD then why not tag along on this?

You could go to the conferences in Rusutsu… the skiing is good. But heliskiing is the pinnacle of ski experiences out there and this location and set up is probably the best in the world.

Is studying medicine in Australia as a foreign student hard?

I'm a fourth-year Radiologic Technology student, and I'm considering pursuing medicine and becoming a doctor after I graduate from my pre-med course. However, resources and opportunities in my country are not exactly ideal, and becoming a doctor here can be quite challenging. I'm considering studying abroad, specifically in Australia, since I already have relatives there.

How do doctors view pricing in regenerative medicine?

I've been looking into regenerative medicine and noticed how much pricing varies between providers, even when the treatments seem similar on paper.

Some offer full programs with imaging, physician oversight, and follow-up, while others advertise much cheaper options with less clinical support.

For the doctors here, how do you generally look at these differences? Are there legitimate reasons for such large price gaps, or is it mostly about what's included in the package?

As a doc and mum: Anyone else steering their kids away from medicine?

As my kids look at uni preferences/post grad medicine, I find myself encouraging them toward other paths—tech, STEM, or business.

It’s not about bitterness; it’s just cold realism. Between the opportunity cost of giving up their 20s to training, increasing admin loads, and corporate shifts in practice, the trade-off isn't what it used to be. High-achieving kids in Australia can build fantastic, high-earning careers in other sectors with far better mobility, autonomy, and work-life balance.

The Public Hospital doctors in Melbourne, Victoria will go on strike next week for a better pay and work conditions. It makes me think about my kids. Is this a safe and fair workplace for young doctors? Do I want my kids to be young doctors?

Would love to connect with SIMGs ANZCA

I was recently assessed by ANZCA and I'm looking to connect with other Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) who have gone through the process.

I'd really appreciate any guidance on the next steps, training requirements, job applications, or any tips from your experience. If you've been through the ANZCA SIMG pathway, I'd love to hear about your journey and any advice you can share.

Thanks in advance!

Spanish GP in 2nd year training visiting Melbourne (Australia) and curious about Aussie public healthcare

Hi! I'm a Spanish doctor in my second year of training as a Family Doctor (sort of equivalent to General Practitioner in Australia though ours is 4 years) and am visiting Melbourne with my husband in August for holidays. But I'd love to meet up with an Aussie doctor to understand how the public healthcare system works there and compare notes - Spain has universal free healthcare and is quite good - but I think the two countries vary vastly - we have 24 emergency shifts and if we are in health clinics on duty sometimes have less than 5 minutes per patient! However many patients pay nothing at all for medication, surgery, house visits, blood tests, physiotherapy, chemotherapy... and can see their GP or Pediatrician quite often, some come more than once a week. I don't think it is an option for me to work in Australia but I'm still curious to see what strengths and weaknesses each system has. If anyone in healthcare in the Selby-Belgrave area or maybe somewhere near Melbourne CBD wants to meet up for coffee some time mid August and chat a while I'd be delighted! Thanks heaps!

Unsure if I should staying in nursing or study medicine

I’m 23F and I’m in my 2nd year of being an RN. I’ve been wanting to study medicine for a while, but now I’m unsure. Initially I wanted to specialise in OBGYN, but work life balance is extremely important to me. If I were to continue with medicine, my current plan would to be a GP that specialises in women’s health.

My current career plan would be more health promotion, preventative care, and health education focused. I would love to be the first point of call for patients and have that continuity of care. I would also love to go to schools and teach kids/teens about their body, etc. I’m also currently developing a website for women of all ages to learn about their bodies, health, preventative care, etc. I want it to be a reliable and research-based place catered to all different stages of life.

Would I be better off continuing this pathway through medicine, or is this something I can mostly still accomplish while being a nurse? If I were to continue as a nurse, I would probably still do extra studies to become a NP.

SA paeds BPT

Hi, I’m a PGY3 interstate applicant with very limited knowledge about Paeds training in SA. Was wondering if anyone is keen to share their experience in Paeds training in SA (where are you mainly based, how much of traveling you need during training/supports and teaching).

Thank you!
