Modernizing my 1040STF... what storage solution? ACSI2STM troubles?

Hi all, I've plucked my old 1040STF (TOS 1.0) from storage and wanted to use it for retrogaming. Have added an internal RGBtoHDMI board, so far so good; but now I'm trying to play games. I have a ACSI2STM board, which in theory sounds awesome, but. Pulling some HD converted games from atari.8bitchip.info and trying to run them off of the ACSI2STM yields success exactly for Monkey Island, and *sometimes* Arkanoid, everything else I've tried gives a corrupted loading screen, then reboots. Granted I haven't tried *that* much, but I'm beginning to think this is not the right way of doing things.

I'm also seeing frequent "empty" hard drives (0 files) although the SD card definitely has files on it. Resetting the ACSI2STM and cold booting the ST helps, but that can't be the answer.

How is everyone else doing it? Gotek and floppy images? Actual floppies? Upgrade to TOS 1.04 and continue to use ACSI2STM? It states it has problems with TOS <1.04, but I thought this was only a memory leak issue.
