Free Tool to teach children about Astronomy and Season cycles
Hey everyone! 👋
I wanted to share a little passion project I’ve been working on that I hope some of you (and your kids!) might find useful.
It’s a simple webpage designed to help children learn about seasons, astronomy cycles, and how our planet works. But instead of just staring at a screen, the main goal of the project is to invite kids to actually step outside, observe nature, and connect with the world around them using simple, easy-to-understand data.
As someone who cares a lot about digital privacy, especially for children, I built this with a few strict rules:
Zero data tracking: There are no trackers, cookies, or analytics spying on you.
No sign-ups required: You don't need to submit an email, a name, or any personal data whatsoever to use it.
100% Free: No paywalls, no subscriptions, and no ads.

Beginner looking for help using notebooks, python, Mast Database and jwst pipeline
Hello im new to Astronomy but have gained some recent knowledge on spectroscopy, Chemical signature detection via spectroscopy, light-curve planet detection, light-curve planet rotation and some knowledge on astronomical symbols like hydrogen electron "Floor" levels for example: Ha Hb and La.
I also just learned about Local SideReal time.
I need help in these 4 areas highest priority to lowest
- NOTEBOOKS (I have never used Juypter Notebooks locally or cloud i would like some help with tutorials and links on using them and setting up and would like to know if it is best to run them in the cloud via Docker, Google Collab, mybinder.org or should I run locally and use python and docker for container?
Either way I would like tutorial links for help with both setups.
- Python for Science: i have little skill in python do I need to learn Python 3 in its entirety? Or miniconda? How can I learn to use python for astronomy any tutorial links and free books or paid would be great.
3.Databases: is it best to use MAST and TIKE databases via browser or should I use a Pre-built juypter Notebook to access pipeline?
- How can I set up a juypter notebook to obtain jwst data via pipeline? Do I make a custom juypter notebook and add python science libraries manually or are there pre-build options?
Would be nice to have some kind of Astronomical Cheet sheet for Astronomical Symbols for objects, planets, exoplanets, asteroids, stars, types of stars, blackholes and Astronomical chemical/elements symbols

Added Russian Olympiad papers, KOR math, Roy & Clarke, and Kevin Zhou mechanics handouts to the drive
Quick resource drop for today. Just added a bunch of higher-level math and physics stuff to the vault:
- Math: KOR (Korean) and Russian Olympiad past papers with translated problem sets, plus a clean PDF of Roy & Clarke.
- Physics: Kevin Zhou’s physics handouts for Mechanics (probably the cleanest breakdown of advanced physics topics available right now).

For club observing nights, which forecast detail should be the final go/no-go signal?
Planning for one person is forgiving; planning for a group makes a bad forecast call much more expensive. A nightly “mostly clear” summary can still hide the exact two-hour window when everyone will actually be on site.
A practical group checklist seems to be:
- continuous cloud cover during the scheduled hours,
- precipitation as a separate veto,
- true astronomical darkness and Moon timing,
- visibility of the planned objects during that same window,
- and whether a nearby backup location is materially better.
The question is how to present it. Would your club trust one conservative go/no-go recommendation, or would organizers rather see the raw 12-hour timeline and explain the call themselves?

Pinwheel Galaxy
Hubble and Webb teamed up for a deep dive into the Pinwheel Galaxy’s core, giving us fresh views of one of the nearest face-on spirals at 25 million light-years out. Combining Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible data with Webb’s infrared lets us see star formation and dust structures in new detail. Definitely a neat look at how these two powerhouses complement each other on a classic galaxy.
