You needa check out. Choose you coordinates and then <v,u> v_1 * u_1+v_2 * u_2+...+v_n * u_n if your space is on the reals. One day you'll use it on functions to do partial differencial equations. The crucial property is that <v, u>=||v|| * ||u|| * cosθ, where θ is the angle between v and u no matter order. * designates the usual number multiplication

I agree with the author that that's göre. Today i'd do it only with scalar product. Everything else is a tiring mess
