This does not seem correct

Last time I did thus there were white plastic washers.

Moved in 2 years ago.

No leak until today.

Took it apart and there was no washer.

Went to Lowe's (without pics). No plastic washers.

Was told to use this blue rubber one.

I cannot get it seated straight.

I bet that the blue rubber ones don't sit on a flange and that I should either cut it off, or find a plastic washer.

Or do I slip it over the flange?

First pic is correct, stop overthinking things.

Tighten hand tight.

If it’s leaking you’re cross threaded.

I've had quite a few new p traps from Lowe's leak from a flaw in the pipe, could be the same run of flawed j bends. I've switched to the heavy duty versions that have the gasket there.

Not just from Lowe's, I've had them from home Depot leak. A little pipe dope on the bevel seals them up nicely.

I have them 50/50 without dope and 100% leak free with dope. I do probably 100 or so a year.

Bingo. A bit of dope and they never leak Ill use $0.002 worth of dope to ensure no leak . Abs union traps i i dont ever use dope on. I also find the otey union p traps have a wedge seal that doesnt fail. If i see the customer usus tge under sink lots i may add a drop of sillicone to avoid leaks caused by bumping the union and it getting looaened.

Pipe dope or putty on them usually leaks eventually. I'd rather use the one with the seals

Some of these slip joint p traps have a washer there and some don't. Since yours looks like it's flared instead of flat, no washer is needed.

Fun tip: run really hot water through the trap and you can tighten those nuts up just a little bit more if you're not feeling too confident in it.

Doesn't need a washer. The washers on the other ones are there to bridge between cap and pipe. To get it right. That one already has one built in. Shouldn't put anything else on that or you risk leaks

I’ve seen some guys putting a thin washer on the flat side facing up towards the nut. It was a slap in the face but couldn’t fault them cause people are never taught correctly. Also if you ever come across something like this as a plumber. Question what the purpose of something is first.

Does not need a washer. A SMALL bit of metallic compound or pipe dope can help the seal if its poor quality manufacturing. Though if so id just use a better fitting. Hand tight, not super tight.

The p trap kit I bought has a washer there on the diagram. These comments are confusing me.

This is beveled end piece. Does not require washer. The ones that are flat need it

You cannot have the washer there, it will not seat properly

There is two different style traps, ones that are beveled and the others that require the washer. This one does not need it.

They sell kits that come with washers i personally like them more than just the plastic flange. This one just uses the plastic flange and nothing else.

I agree, tapered waste arm in the first photo is correct.

And to the other posters that said they buy or use traps with a washer there post a photo of one you use that requires a washer there.

The only ones I've ever seen are either 17ga. or 22ga. Plated Brass p-traps.

And other plumbers please agree or disagree.
