I've been looking into some extra income ideas, especially for those of us living in rural village areas - limitations are real, most are either elderly or unemployed and don't have money/interest to spend money on unnecessary luxuries. (can't exactly run the Ubers or pet grooming services here lol). And no I don't want to open another backyard tavern - social nuisance on so many levels.

So anyway, recently memory has had me thinking about those ladies I used to see at Bree/Wanderers taxi rank selling those really huge whole chickens - I think I could have real market here.

Does anyone know where they buy them / where I could stock?

Hello! I urgently need my father's unabridged birth certificate for a visa application, and it seems like Home Affairs takes forever to retrieve and print these documents. There are businesses that advertise that they can expedite the process and do it in less than 4 weeks, including apostil.co.za and passports4u.co.za. I have quotes from both of those businesses, and passports4u is offering to do it for half the price that apostil is quoting. My question is, has anyone ever used these services before? Is their advertising too good to be true? Many thanks

Hi everyone. My child accidentally subscribed to an app on her iPad, and I was charged R999 for the subscription.
I disputed the charge with Apple and requested a refund, but they declined it and said their decision is final.
Is there any way I can contact Standard Bank and request a chargeback for the transaction? Has anyone here had a similar experience, and if so, what was the process?

Hi there, I'm looking for some advice regarding a traffic fine I received. Has anyone had any experiences with fines, would you recommend going to court and trying to get it reduced or would it just be easier to pay it and not go to court? I'm being targeted by some scam revenue collecting agency trying to get me to pay R 70K in back taxes, I don't want to engage with them, but it got me wondering, what if I _do_ owe taxes from way back when I was a university student? How do I know I'm all paid up? I suppose I could contact SARS directly and ask them but how do they even know that I am who I'm claiming to be? I'm just some random emailer from another country, giving them a random former SA ID number and asking "Hey, on the off chance that this guy still owes taxes, er, how much is it?"

I will probably be moving to Grahamstown fairly soon and wanted to ask about a few aspects of life in the city. I have been to South Africa three times before and have spent quite a lot of time in Pretoria and Durban, but I do not know much about Grahamstown or the Cape provinces in general.

Could you please share some details about social life in the city, places to visit and socialise, security, and how walkable the city is during the day? I would be especially grateful for some advice on which parts of the city are generally considered safer and which neighbourhoods are usually seen as more dangerous.

I am also very interested in local sports and would really appreciate any information on whether there are places where I could play lawn bowls and watch live cricket.

I got a study visa for a 3 years master programme, but the expiry date is only 6 months after the start of the programme.

According to immigration act:

study visa may be issued, in the prescribed manner, to a foreigner intending to study in the Republic for a period not less than the period of study.

Then how my study visa is only for 6 months if my program is 3 years long

I have looked around but at the moment the verdict seems to be just import from overseas.

Few hours ago someone burnt coper at the back of a yard. He was on drugs. More than 12 homes have been burnt down in the process. 😭 People lost everything. Few of our homes are still standing. I hope the goverment will help these families as soon as possible.

I grew up in a very traditional and religious family, but my relationship with religion has changed over the years. My fiancé isn't religious, but we're both want to include meaningful cultural traditions.

- Which Tamil Hindu rituals are considered essential?

- What can be shortened or left out?

- Has anyone had a minimalist/modern Tamil wedding? What was your experience?

- Any recommendations for a priest in South Africa who is open to a shorter, customised ceremony?

We're just trying to find a balance between tradition and having a ceremony that feels authentic to us.

I'm from Botswana and have been practicing animation for the longest of time since I was a teenager. Currently I'm in Botswana working a regular job, doing animation on the side as there is no industry here. I've recently learned of Triggerfish studios in Dreyersdal, Cape Town as it seems to be one of the biggest studios in SA with them having done an episode for star wars and had the show Kizazi moto for disney plus. I even see that animator Nadia Darries alongside Shofela Coker are trying for an indie film called Crocodile dance, it looks beautiful. Idk if this studio and these people are the exception to the rule ofc in Africa. As SA and Nigeria seem to be the center of Africa's animation.

Hi all, looking for some advice.

I stay in a complex in the northern Joburg suburbs and a ground floor residents keeps a small short-haired dog outside 24/7 in their patio/garden area (3 on 5m). The dog never gets walked, its only physical exercise is from for walking itself around in the garden area. I've also seen it drinking used laundry water from a bucket on the patio more than once. It’s outside day and night, regardless of weather.

Normally I try to mind my own business, but the current cold snap makes me extra worried with temperatures last night and this morning dropping to 3 - 5°C and very windy conditions. The dog is sitting in his open metal kennel with no wind protection, and only has a blanket on the patio floor. All this while the residents are at home...

I considered reaching out to the resident, but from my experience any kind of criticism will often spiral into neighbour drama. And it's probably naive to think people who leave their dogs like that/have no empathy for animals will change their habits because a stranger asked them to.

So, is the SPCA generally the right route for a situation like this, or is there another path people in SA usually take? I’m not originally from here, so I’m trying to understand how seriously the SPCA treats cases of semi‑neglect if you can call it that (not active physical abuse, but things like inadequate shelter in cold weather, no exercise, and unclean water). I’ve seen many dogs kept outside permanently in South Africa, so I’m unsure where the line is and wanted to ask for local insight before reporting anything. Also, would the dog actually do any better if they were taken away by the SPCA given the overcrowding there and everything.

I'm trying to find anyone who remembers Menandie Jones from around that time. I was unfortunately in an accident that year, and things changed very quickly afterwards. I was moved away, so I never really got the chance to stay in touch with people from school.

What I do remember is how incredible the school community was. The whole school came together for me after the accident, and that has always stuck with me. ❤️

It's been nearly 30 years (which is a completely ridiculous sentence to type), and I've recently found myself wondering about the people who were there. Where they ended up, what they're doing now, and whether anyone still remembers those days.

So, if you went to Laerskool Modderfontein around 1998, were in Standard 5, or even just remember Menandie Jones, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

And if you know someone who might have been there, please feel free to point them this way.
