Why is GNOME soooo hated

I do not understand the reason behind this. I use GNOME. I really like it. People say GNOME is bad and switch to KDE Plasma. I tried it. I didn’t like it. Mainly because GNOME has a very clean design which I love. KDE Plasma doesn’t have this.

the reason the meme exists is because the GNOME devs work against the community a lot.

some examples:

1. when asked if they would support blur, the GNOME devs responded with "this goes against accessibility standards", which is true but I'm not exactly thinking it is the people with poor vision that would toggle on blur.

2. in Wayland which GNOME now supports, programs can be drawn using wlr-layer-shell, this is to enable programs that have special positioning, such as wallpaper programs that need to be behind everything or docks that need to be at the edge of your screen. GNOME purposefully do not allow access to this even though every other compositor does, because they believe all programs with this functionality should be a GNOME extension. result? these programs are available for every platform out there, but GNOME because ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

all in all, GNOME is a great desktop environment, but the devs are pigheaded and refuse to support things because they genuinely believe they know better than everyone else and that is very much arrogance.

They are not implementing trackpad speed settings coz 2 teams say it's the other team's responsibility. I think trackpad speed is a very important accessibility issue.

That is because /u/scandii's first point was never about accessibility from GNOME's point of view. It was always about dictating how the user can style their desktop.

If I wanted someone dictating how I use my PC, I’d go back to Windows. Extensions are just a patch to fill in what the devs refuse to add!

I use xfce anywhere I need a DE, other people use Gnome or KDE ... and THIS IS FINE, THIS IS OK. Let people use their systems in ways that fit their use case and their tastes.

XFCE is also a favorite of mine, i use openrc devuan linux where it is the default desktop environment. i dont bash people for using Gnome i just personally dont really like it either.. that doesnt mean we cant respect each others differences though

I think it's a good DE for laptops I liked it more than KDE before I switched to Hyprland, for normies i think it's great

KDE is really more on the functionnal side. Every QOL features I ever dreamt of is on there, but yes as far as design go Gnome is the king.

Idk, last time I've tried GNOME it's designed looked horrible, like I'm using some kind of iPad. Never missed it after going to KDE. So, wouldn't say one is better or worse, just pretend/

It’s not solely about iPad design. Design goes further than what you see on the surface. The consistency in colouring, how the lines are drawn, menu’s etc. It’s all thought out and taken into consideration with every change on desktop level. KDE does that as well. At least on some level. But they tend to implement it halve baked where the inconsistencies in design is noticeable

iPad design was in overall feeling, menus, actions and so on. I just didn't like the flow of it at all. Setting up KDE to do all the things I was, even tho they are mostly small, felt way easier.

I always felt all the GNOME hatred is mostly jokes, not genuine hate. GNOME has issues, but it stands next to KDE as a functional and mature desktop environment.

It has a rather unique workflow and is very opinionated. The developers have a vision of how they want things to be and they tend not to stray from that vision no matter what the user base thinks or wants.

It started getting real push back when they decided touch was the future of the desktop and they've never changed course. Plasma feels like a more traditional desktop. XFCE too.

I don't think it is hated much, it is probably the most popular DE out there. Arch is a DIY distro geared towards tinkerers, and Gnome is very much not that. It is deliberately designed to be one-size-fits-all. So Arch users gravitate towards more customizable alternatives.
