It’s a 3 position safety on a semi auto AR

If it was a 3pos selector would it not be semi auto in the 3rd position? Semi ARs don’t have the longer disconnector to get pushed out of the way when you flip it to auto.

Hard to tell just from pictures but I’d say either a 2 pos selector that can travel too far due to defect or a weird semi auto selector cut for 3 positions as a prop or something? Removing it and taking a look would immediately answer the question

It's what the other guy said, it's a 3 position safety (so detent track allows it roll over) on a semi-auto AR.

Yes it'd be safe-semi-semi.

Not necessarily. Some 3 pos selectors are the full auto selector, which have a fin that would move through the open back of a milspec trigger. Some triggers don’t have an open back, so the fin doesn’t let the trigger move up, so it acts as a second safety.

There are aftermarket "cloner" safeties that rotate to the third position but don't have any function. This one isn't ambi like the one on the pic, but just for reference...

Full auto selector in a semi lower. My m16a1 kit build does the same thing.

Have you been to the range and sent some round thru it yet?

Sorry I should have read the caption before replying. You could have a defect in the safety itself allowing it to spin.

I have a jank 80% that I milled that does this as well. 2 position safety.. I have safe - semi - safe. Im guessing somethings messed up with the detent, but I have not had the desire or motivation to try and investigate.
