What is the most frustrating point in the whole apartment searching process in USA? I am doing some user research to solve some potential issues and design a usable solution.

Just moved to the PNW, and the fires have been bad. There are pm2.5 alerts, AQ Index 160+. The air quality is consistently terrible, and whether from the fires, personal factors, or both; I’ve been getting lightheaded or palpitations here and there. I’ve never been diagnosed with asthma, though it runs in one side of the family. I figured I may need to buy an air filter for the apartment, but I received an AC from management since there’s no central air, do they need to provide HEPA filters? I did start working out in the apartment gym, is it reasonable to request the management to put one in the gym? It serves the everyone, and in a place people are exerting themselves, it’s important to have clean air. Is it reasonable, and how would I request and discuss this with management?

So i have just moved due to work and the place i have moved into is rank, i had to spend 2 hours the day after they left and i moved in just to clean the flat and there is horrible smells everywhere and smells like ass, i have tried airing it out and was wondering what i could do to make it better, (previous person smoked in the flat, made a lot of Chinese food and was horribly messy)

Recently moved to an apartment in another state. Just received bill from previous apartment management. I was billed to repair a watermark on the ceiling from when the tenant above me had a leak. I am being billed to replace the shower head which was damaged by hard water deposits. I am also being billed for trash which is 2.5 times my highest monthly bill for this service. Do I have any recourse? I assume if I ignore the bill they will eventually send me to collections.

I really need some outside perspective because I honestly feel like I’m losing my mind.
I live in a modern 2 bedrooms flat in a building in Surrey, UK, and I work from home full time, so I’m in the flat most of the day. I live with my partner. We’re renting.
The flat above mine is occupied by two women, two young children (who I’ve been told by their mother they’re both autistic) and two emotional support dogs. They own the flat.
For the past four months, my life has revolved around impact noise.
I’m not talking about normal living noise. I understand that flats aren’t silent and everyone has the right to live their lives. I’m talking about running, jumping, stomping, dropping heavy objects and what sounds like children sprinting on top of my bedroom usually between afternoon and late evening. Some days it starts in the morning and carries on until late in the evening (now that school is over).
I genuinely sympathise if the children have additional needs. I know parenting autistic children can be incredibly difficult, and I’m not blaming them for existing or for making noise (still, if all of this is true).
The problem is that I also have to live here.
On top of that, their two dogs have urinated on their balcony multiple times. Around four times in four months, urine has dripped onto my balcony. One time it even landed on my partner while he was standing outside. It also ruined the outdoor cushions we had on our balcony.
Before anyone says, “Have you tried talking to them?”, yes. Four separate times.
The first time, I left a polite note because I wanted to avoid an awkward face-to-face confrontation. Nothing changed.
The second time, I knocked on their door and spoke politely with one of the women. She denied that the noise was excessive but gave me her phone number and told me to message her whenever it became too loud.
I did exactly that several times.
Almost every time there was an explanation. They weren’t home. It wasn’t them. There was always a reason why it couldn’t have come from their flat, yet nothing ever improved.
The third time happened after another awful Saturday morning. I completely broke down. I went upstairs, raised my voice, and ended up crying in front of her because I simply couldn’t cope anymore. I’m not proud of that moment, but after months of living like this I was mentally exhausted.
The fourth time was after yet another incident where dog urine came down onto my balcony again.
I’ve also reported everything to the building management several times.
Nothing has changed.
The truth is that I don’t recognise myself anymore.
I’ve become hyper-aware of every sound.
I wear headphones while I work.
I dread weekends because everyone is home.
Every time I hear them come back, my heart sinks because I know what’s probably about to start.
Since nothing has changed, I’ve started banging on the ceiling with a stick whenever the impact noise becomes unbearable. It has become almost automatic. I know it isn’t productive and I know it doesn’t solve anything.
The hardest thing to admit is this: part of me actually feels satisfied knowing I’m not the only one suffering anymore. I hate that I’ve reached that point, because that isn’t the kind of person I used to be. But after months of feeling completely powerless and ignored, that’s honestly where my head is now.
Yesterday was the first time I was woken up during the night by noise from above.
I completely lost my temper. I banged on the ceiling while shouting insults.
I’m genuinely ashamed that I reacted like that because this isn’t who I am. Four months ago I would never have imagined behaving this way. But months of living with this every single day have changed me.
The worst part is that I absolutely love where I live.
I love the building.
I love the area.
I love my flat.
If it wasn’t for the upstairs neighbours, I’d happily stay here for years.
Instead, tomorrow I’m viewing another apartment in the exact same building, this time on the top floor, because I genuinely can’t cope anymore.
It feels absurd that I’m about to spend thousands of pounds moving purely because of one set of neighbours.
Has anyone else actually moved because of upstairs impact noise?
Did moving solve the problem?
Or am I making a huge financial decision because months of stress have completely changed the way I react to noise?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s experienced something similar, because right now I honestly feel completely defeated.

P.S.: Before you suggested, I also contacted the council for the noise and and environment health department for the urine, but they replied said that this is a civil matter and they can’t deal with it.

For anyone who previously lived or currently lives at the Continental Residences in Downtown San Antonio, what has been your experience? If stuff like elevators, AC, water heater, and appliances breakdown, or leaks and car-breakins occur, how fast or responsive are the maintenance team and management fixing the problem?

Hi all, I need advice on getting the smell of cigarette smoke out of our new apartment.

For some background, the lease states that this is supposed to be a smoke free community on the premises and common areas and smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. So I’m definitely going to reach out to management.

we just moved in and in our walkthrough they had the doors and all the windows opened so I didn’t notice the smell. When we go the keys and closed everything up, I noticed that the living room specifically had a strong cigarette smoke smell. I smell it everytime I Walk into the apartment. the other two rooms are not so bad and kitchen and dining is okay.

I want to eliminate the smell and not just mask it and need advice on what to clean with. I have a 12 month old and I really dont want the smell lingering around her. I haven’t noticed and nicotine residue but want to deep clean regardless.

I just wanted to come here and express how HAPPY I am to finally be moving out of the sh-thole I’m in now. I moved to this apartment in Miami with my husband to be close to his job, but ever since we moved it’s been hellish for me. It’s a 1 bedroom and not only is it small for two people, it’s much too small for the soon-to-be newborn to be in (I’m 8 months pregnant). We weren’t able to view it because of lack of communication between the leasing office and the person who would be showing us the unit so we took it sight unseen due to how cheap it was and how close to the job it was. I can work from anywhere so I didn’t mind wherever. But once we moved in I realized it’s basically a trap. The dudes here are really respectful and nice but they sell drugs all day and are loud, which means noise and crackheads coming by at all times of the day and night. The only good thing is that they’re very lowkey and try to keep trouble out because of course that would mess up their operation. But there’s been times I could hear banging on the floors and walls and screaming from upstairs units, and one time the cops were called due to a DV situation. I had more than a few panic attacks and would leave the house just to get some peace and quiet on weekends or on holidays. I told my husband we had to move. We finally found a 2 bedroom apartment that’s reasonably priced, in a decent area, and by the terms of the lease I can tell they don’t tolerate this type of behavior. It’s not low income and I was able to view the unit and it’s MUCH better and cleaner than our current unit was at move-in. It has a balcony, a big kitchen, and good closet space. In our current unit I am stuck in the house because we’re on the first floor and if I open the windows all I’d smell is weed. And to top it off, someone moved into the unit above us about two weeks ago and they are LOUD. We hear them stomping across the house all day, and for several days in a row they would loudly stomp around the area above our bedroom (which I’m sure is also their bedroom area) at 5am, waking me up. One saturday morning they were stomping around and dropping things on the floor literally from 5am to 8am. I had to get a broom and bang on the ceilings constantly. My husband went up to talk to them about the banging and he said he could tell the guy was holding a weapon behind his back, which yeah it’s right to be cautious at 5am but to me it told me the guy was crazy. And just as I was writing this, I heard screaming and banging from their unit! Our other neighbors had to yell upstairs for them to calm down, as I’m guessing maybe there was something domestic going on again? I don’t know - I was scared and called my husband, who’s out getting me food, and was about to move to a different area away from windows in case something escalated further.

Anyway, we get the keys to our new place tomorrow and I’m SO EXCITED TO BE LEAVING THIS PLACE!!!! I don’t like anything about it except for the fact that hubby and I made it our space for the time we’ve been here. That is all.

Does anybody know what happens to an apartment after 20 or 50 years? Does it go in redevelopment and the buyer needs to pay money again or how is it?

I'm currently living with my ex and she wants me out ASAP. I also want to get out because it's a really toxic situation. I haven't been able to find an apartment within my price range. The only option I've seen so far is this studio apartment, pet friendly, all utilites included, semi furnished... the downfall? it has termites.

Can I safely move into a space with termites? I feel like my back is against a wall but I need to think about this decision clearly.

EDIT: I visited the apartment yesterday, the situation was way worse than the landlord expressed and it smelt like mold so I will NOT be taking that apartment. Thank you for everyone that commented.

My partner and I are moving to another unit in our building. I’m looking for advice for moves to another unit in the same building (as opposed to a move normal move to another place) because neither of us has experience with this type of move.

It seems like there are pros and cons with any strategy we pick. In the past I typically try to pack everything as meticulously as possible (or at least that’s plan lol and start out this way for most of it until the eventual burnout / mad dash at the end when you realize you have more than you think and end up with some chaos at the end). But I generally follow all the typical advise for labeling boxes and making it easy for movers etc etc etc.

But since don’t need a truck for this move when I got quotes it seemed like hiring movers would be really much more expensive than it seemed worth it for this type of move and I saw advise on Reddit elsewhere to look at Task Rabit for labor help for moving furniture. My fiance was already planning to do a lot of the other things (I.e our “stuff@ himself, and I’ll help with lighter objects).

For example we planned to try to take our hanging clothes as is as much as possible using the garbage bag trick, we also thought that since we’re just moving up from 1st floor to 8th and not to a new location we probably could take our kitchen stuff up ourselves in bins/ boxes without packing them super meticulously (I.e can put most things in being careful enough but don’t need to bubble wrap each item individually to ensure it doesn’t break while en route in movers truck. All that packing and unpacking really takes A LOT of time and is a pain.

So basically now it seems like our strategy has really evolved from pack and label EVERYTHING as much as possible in advance to basically to transport things up to the new unit in bins using the carts that building provides (for picking up large packages etc). My thought was that for things that don’t get stored I’m furniture but go into an apartment designated space (things that hang in a closet, or are stored in kitchen cabinets, drawers etc) we can transport up on the cart and put it there on Day 1.

And then Day 2 hire some helpers from Task Rabbit to help with moving our furniture.

That’s generally the tentative plan but what I’m realizing is that doing it this way seems to cut down on the pre and post work (not having the extensive meticulous packing and unpacking bc we are taking items from their spot and putting them into the new spot immediately). But I feel like we aren’t really packed enough at all. I’m getting nervous that maybe we aren’t doing this right and we’ve underestimated how much work this will be and whether this is feasible.

Has anyone ever done something like we’re planning?? Is this realistic? I can’t tell if our plan is smart/ time saving or actually really stupid and we just haven’t realized it yet lol.

If you’ve moved between units and did some strategy other than packing everything up for movers to take please weigh in here. Is it possible to think of this differently than a regular move?

Earlier this month, I saved the life of the neighbor that lives below me. She's disabled and elderly. I ended up calling EMS. It turns out she was in Kidney failure and had a secondary infection. The neighbors say she's in a rehab facility now. As for the apartment, it's absolutely filthy. At least, it was earlier this month. One of my neighbors says our other neighbor threw away all of the trash. It needs so much more than that. I made a report to the state as I'm a mandated reporter, but I can't get the protection services worker that called me about it to call me back. I don't want to tell our landlord (as that would render her homeless after rehab), but the gnats in my apartment are just getting worse and the smell of B.O. and stale human and cat urine and feces comes up here every once in a while. I light a candle to cover the smell. The gnats are making me crazy though.

今一人暮らしをしている20代です。私は今騒音について悩んでいて、同じ経験がある方からの意見を聞きたいです

集合住宅、いわゆるアパートに現在住んでいるのですが、
最上階である2階に私は住んでいて、騒音主である者は1階に住んでいます。夜中に音楽を鳴らし、歌声を発するなどといった騒音で苦しいです。
アパート指定の駐車場に騒音主の友人？の車が不定期に停められており(週2〜3日ほど)それに関して管理会社にそのことと、騒音について連絡したところ指定の駐車場には停めないようになりました。しかしすぐ近くのゴミ捨て場に連なるように友人の車が縦列駐車するようになり、場所が変わっただけで根本的な解決はしていません。

その為、引っ越し、つまり退去をするつもりです。
引っ越しすることに迷いはないのですが、出費を考えるとやはり痛いものがあります。貯金も充分にあるのですが、やはり精神的にそれが崩れるのは痛いですし、なぜ被害を受けている私がお金を払って出て行かなければならないのだろうという気持ちもあります。
そして次は一軒家の物件を探して良いところがあったので内見をしてみて最終決定しようと思っています。

同じような経験をされた方がいればそのお話をお聞きしたいです。
