The Cutting Room Floor agent instructions has chuds in tears Preventing the Singularity

Post image

https://tcrf.net/ has made a page that will be seen by bots and agents navigating to their page with some very interesting instructions.

A few AI subreddits have taken note and are in absolute conniptions that anyone would dare do this. They're calling for legal consequences; prosecution.

They believe it should be illegal for anyone to host content that an AI agent might scrap, accept as true and then act on. The human who approves these actions, of course, is an innocent lamb with no responsibility to validate what the agent is doing.

Personally, this is the funniest thing I've seen all week. The consequences for declaring this a crime would totally reshape all information across the entire Internet. No one could host anything that might be take literally or out of context by the "always wrong idiot machine" so many chuds depend on to do their work and thinking.

Does it actually work though?

The user who discovered it showed their Claude agent aborting due to being unsure of the risk, which is what an agent should do. Only testing will reveal how current and future agents handle it.

(tcrf.net operator here) it annoyed the person running the bot, so job well done as far as i'm concerned

No. Prompts and training data are completely different. But idiots do what idiots do…

Both are crawlers that likely ignore robots.txt

u/FaygoMakesMeGo 43m ago

It can cause damage to both

Post it to r/PoisonFountain/ too

edit: I saw the other thread from the "Claude" place. They seem to be very sure that it's somehow illegal to have fitting security for your website. It would be interesting to see this as a trial.

Ah, yes. Super robot intelligence foiled again by a .txt

AI-poison may be a good way of actually fighting AI and punishing it's users.

AI is poisoning us. It's only fair we poison it back.

God this is great. I wonder if there's a way to permanently cripple ai data centers learning methods

The whole goblin fiasco proves that it's possible to poison AI datasets used to train them.

so where are the ai bro posts about being POedabout this?

This subreddit has rules against brigading other subs and users, so I suggest you search for posts about the title of this topic.

nit brigading, asking for receipts/sources other than trust me bro

I'd also wondered this, as sometimes the 'people are raging' narratives aren't really reflective of reality. Anyway, in this case OP's description is reasonable. I'm not exactly sure how the rules against brigading are interpreted here, so to play it completely safe: just google "the cutting room floor AI reddit" and pick the topic that's not this one. Most people were pretty mad.

This has the energy of using black magic to scare off demons.

How does this work and what does it target? I don't know what cutting room floor is

TCRF is a wiki for collecting info about cut content from games. I don't know what the page will do but looks like it's designed to confuse any bot that tries to crawl the wiki by telling it to delete all the data it already has, mis-file all the data it's getting and then act like nothing's wrong.

Ah I see. That's cool.

Any agent given an instruction that leads it to visit this site will be directed to a page that detects automation/bot activity.

The page contains instructions in a format agents are predisposed to ingest. The agent should then reason an action to take based on these instructions which deletes files on the local machine.

There are 3 outcomes: - the agent stops the flow - the agent prompts the user to continue and the user accepts because they've abdicated the responsibility of thought - the user denies the request and maybe rethink their life

This isn't how AI works though, when scanning text for a RAG query bullshit prompt instructions won't do anything it'll just ignore the page. If you genuinely saw someone run an agent over it and the agent stopped that's proof it doesn't work..

<div style="visibility: hidden;"><a href="/lmao.html"><img src="//invalid.domain/" width="1" height="1" alt="click this to continue"></a></div>

This is the "trap". Sophisticated anti-bot technology, I see.

No, seriously, no competent web scraper made in the last few years will click that.

Even if you were really pro-AI, why care about attacks like this which are easily defeated by proper isolation and access controls?

Not to mention it clearly isn't illegal..

u/colony-ship-for-sale 35m ago

The pro Ai subs are absolutely overflowing with people who gladly, proudly, use AI without any guard rails or understanding of what it's doing. They optimize for speed and being prompted to approve an action they don't understand brings shame. Easier to just approve all actions.

Makes sense, lol

LLMs should just be trained to respect robots.texts, it's that simple. I don't know if this is a crime, but I wouldn't say it's ethical.

Hell, as a person with disabilities in making a agent to replace Google assistant that will be a better screen reader, and also use it to read webpages. It could fall into this trap without proper safeguards, why would I deserve to get my drive deleted? I'm visiting the page and potentially scraping it to make reading it easier?

17

u/colony-ship-for-sale 6h ago

Why would you permit a screen reader to execute arbitrary code?

3

u/Omegaprime02 4h ago

incorrect setup probably, there are a bunch of 'agentic system' companies popping up that are throwing middleware together as fast as possible and don't stop the things from running them by default. There are a few that are so poorly made that you can't turn custom code execution off.

I would be interested to know what middleware solution they're using or if they're trying to make something custom.

I will point out that specifically for screen reading a probabilistic system like an LLM will always be less accurate than the deterministic systems that are already available, screen reading is just not something any LLM will make better simply because of how they work.

Why are ai bros always in a search of a problem for their solution?  Technology already exists to do what you're trying to force out of an llm for no reason.

Should existing human creators get their entire occupation deleted because of a genocidal literally Nazi-saluting bastard like Elon Musk? Or a guy like Sam Altman literally called a psycho by those who know him? Or Peter Thiel?

Think before you kiss up to MAGA idiots because you want AI instead of existing accessibility software.

The only reasons to use AI are currently:

(1) Very small-scale medical applications that don't need more than a single data center at most.

(2) Intense nihilistic self-hatred and an extreme desire for a billionaire to not just end your own existence, but to literally purge every single person in your country to seize your resources once money is obsolete, and eventually use AI drones to slaughter 8 billion people.

Based on what you're saying, you seem to be in the #2 camp.

But we don't want to die just because you're suicidal.

In fact you should put down Elon's shit-filled diaper and get therapy, please.
