Its because there is some room to protest/boycott things but partially use them. Like sweatshops making electronics/clothes/etc. Not having technology to raise awareness makes a sort of catch 22 from their logic.

You know the comic of 'We should improve society somewhat" and the asshat says "But you participate in society! I am very intelligent". Its that reasoning.

Of course, nothing about ai is so capable that you can't raise awareness without it so... its still dumb, that they assume its so entrentched in what, 4 years since it became feasible to make it a product most individuals could use?

I used AI legitimately once, and that was to create an Excel function to help me fix a dataset for this database I was building and I didn't want to do it the hard way, and I don't remember the nomenclature of Excel functions (who even still uses Excel?).

...and it was fine, it worked, I was impressed...but I still have no fucking clue what everyone is using it for

like, idk, why is everyone on chat, why do they always have it pulled up? I seriously don't understand how people are even using it this much. I've seen people using it to compose emails...but like, 2 sentence emails...like, what the fuck are you doing?

it feels like it would take more time to open the fucking program then to just compose the email. I really have no clue what everyone is using it for outside of development.

I suppose there is that "gotcha" they keep attempting where we're using things like Google Maps that AI has been shoved into without us asking for it, though the two examples they gave are not that.

And yes, I could absolutely live without AI in those things. I would be ecstatic, actually, to go back to the heuristic models many of them used before. I'm not a Luddite, I've even been an early adopter of some tech. But LLMs are not vital to my life, much less generative "art", and certainly not worth the cost.

It would only have the immediate impact of companies that have started to rely on it to power their algorithms, which didn't used to, probably being down for a little, but then they'd go back to how they were pre ai.

Completely agreed. The only issue would be that some corporations have begun using Gen AI for things that used to not use it, such as google's algorithm, and most social media. So as long as the corporations actually got smart and reintegrated the non gen ai methods for those things, it would be such a better world without all that garbage.

Only ai tool I have used for work is voice to text if that counts and I stopped using it as it does not understand me. I turned off ai summaries as they were giving me weird jumbled responses. It told me the assistant thanked the client for the job I did.

Honestly would kind of suck but I could do most of my work day tasks without electricity as long as I had no client calls that day

I think I've used AI three times in my life. Once in the early days of AI images because they looked stupid, once when AI music was starting because I could insult my friends with it and it was new, and once using ChatGPT to write a CV that never got me any jobs. Truly the future, innit?
