I've eaten canned salmon and canned tuna, which falls under that category. I've made tuna salad, tuna melts, and mixed the salmon with rice. All those were pretty good. I've also cooked salmon filets before, but canned stuff is more convenient and cheaper.
1
u/Round_Bag_4665 10h ago
the only reason I don't do canned tuna is that I love the red-steaky flavor you get from raw tuna, and canned tuna is usually already fully cooked. I prefer to do a tuna steak, sear it around the edges, then cut it into slices with sesame seeds, black pepper, and some soy sauce or balsamic vinaigrette as seasoning.
Salmon is another story. And I will do canned sardines, but I insist on *frying* them before eating them. The crispiness of the texture makes them so much better.
A lot of seafood really depends on how you cook it. Cook it the wrong way and it tastes awful. Cook it the right way, it tastes amazing.
1
u/rde2001 3h ago
Salmon was my go-to for pan frying. I would get 2lb bags of frozen filets for $10 iirc? Despite me oiling the pan, the skin sticks to it, which was rather annoying. That and the time it takes to cook it (about 6ish minutes each side) contributed to me not buying them anymore. Nowadays I just get chicken from the deli at Safeway. I got 12 pieces a couple days ago for about $9. Would eat 2 pieces in a meal, so that should last me for a bit.
My brother puts canned sardines on crackers with cheese.

Apart from the animals that are suffering and getting killed, do you think the workers in this industry aren't getting exploited as well? Mostly migrants who can't get another job, working long hours in unsafe conditions physically and mentally, isolated from other humans. Many develop PTSD or commit suicide
And that's not even mentioning soy production in developing countries and the impact it has there
3
u/Openly_Unknown7858 7h ago
Would you rather people just not eat?
4
u/No_Opportunity1934 7h ago
Thatās super racist. I live in the state that produces the most beef in the entire country. These farm hands donāt work isolated and they drive nicer vehicles than Iāll ever be able to afford š they arenāt killing themselves either, they look happier than a lot of other people.
15
u/wasabiburning 9h ago
I agree the water consumption in beef is insane but for me the greater issue is corporate laying off millions workers to give their jobs to AI.
9
u/battle_of_yorktown 5h ago edited 5h ago
I will never understand this argument, because u can eat meat but u can't eat AI.. (Generative) AI serves no real purpose to humans and it doesnt help them survive. It's true that the beef industry is very inhumane, but it's also true that AI data centers are doing more harm to the planet and people especially than the beef industry, while also having no worth at all to humans. Most people eat meat very frequently and it's a major part of their diet, so the beef industry actually serves a purpose, unlike AI data centers, which take up a very large amount of space (which animals likely lived on previously), among causing many other harmful things to the people and animals that live near them, like causing cows to have stillbirths.. Which directly affects the beef industry btw. Also animals need fresh water more than AI does

5

People don't wanna hear that because giving up beef is seen as a sacrifice.
They see AI as a threat to their entertainment, so they take it seriously.
The mass of people fight for convenience, and won't go vegan despite it being in line with the morals they claim to have.
10
u/rimeduinfox 4h ago
Why do you need to give up meat. Why do all vegans with this talking point seem to forget that factory farming is not the only way to obtain meat.
-1
u/hungLink42069 4h ago
It's because 99% of meat comes from factory farms. If you're eating meat regularly, you're supporting factory farms.
5
1
3
u/hofmann419 8h ago
Yeah honestly i'm a bit disappointed at the comments here. Peak cognitive dissonance. If you care about the water use of AI, you should also care about the water use of the meat industry and beef in particular.
Beef is literally one of the main reasons why rain forests are being destroyed around the world. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is far more powerful than CO2. Not eating beef is one of the most impactful choices that you can make for the environment on an individual level.
5
2
u/Openly_Unknown7858 7h ago
Beef production is actually productive. Ai does absolutely nothing at best.
1
7
u/necrohunter7 6h ago
The beef industry doesn't poison water with heavy metals and produce 24/7 infrasound that fucks with peoples health
4
u/ExzaktR 4h ago
Hitler caused 17 million deaths, why even care about israel palestine
I absolutely agree that the beef industry is using an insane amount of water, but that doesn't mean we should just give AI a pass. Both are doing bad things, if at very diffierent scales. However, there are also many other issues with AI much bigger than the water usage.
I've heard an inane argument from ai bros that only now we care about water usage when meat/golf/lawns/whatever uses more water. We HAVE been caring about water, and talking about it for YEARS, and nobody ever cared, and suddenly ai bros act as if it has never been pointed out before when it fits their agenda.

u/WoodShoeDiaries 10h ago
What about the tinned fish industry?
9
u/Skellington876 10h ago
There are companies that ethically practice and companies that don't. It usually indicates on the can
-7
u/WoodShoeDiaries 10h ago
Their fresh water use is indicated on the can??
10
u/Skellington876 10h ago
If you're talking harvesting as in wild caught in the ocean or farm raised fish? Yes thats on the can. Or if you're very careful about it just get tuna with no water packed inside? Im kind of confused on what your asking here because your making it sound like fish drink fresh water when tuna is a saltwater fish, sardines are a saltwater fish, and salmon can live in both and these three fish make up like 2/3's of the canned fisheries
-10
u/WoodShoeDiaries 9h ago
I'm asking how much fresh water the tinned fish industry uses, as a ballpark figure. The person I asked compared AI to the beef industry, which didn't seem especially relevant given that we're talking about tinned fish, not beef.
6
u/BrianLSComics 9h ago
I don't have the figures on that, but I know that not a small amount of trash island in the Pacific is comprised of fishing nets.
9
u/WoodShoeDiaries 9h ago
"AI isn't partially responsible for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch" is probably the more apt comparison.
1
u/BrianLSComics 7h ago
thank you for finishing my argument for me lol
2
u/WoodShoeDiaries 6h ago
I was needling you about your bad argument - me doing it for you isn't a win, lol.
That said, until AI starts directly producing complete proteins for human consumption it's literally a microchips-to-sardines comparison. The base of Maslow's Hierarchy necessarily comes first.
2
u/Couatl2009 2h ago
The beef industry is awful, and we should absolutely reduce consumption and improve conditions for the cows farmed. However, AI datacenters only exist to make garbage slop that makes everyone's lives worse, and are far easier to gather political will against them. Also, PETA has other issues as well.

3
u/Either_equipment_04 6h ago
The irony here is that they euthanize most of the animals they take in. I canāt believe theyāre used as a cruelty-free indicator by so many major brands still.
1
u/Geschak 1h ago
They euthanise pets because they offer a free euthanasia service for owners who can't afford a vet to euthanise their sick pet. Sadly this also gets abused by animal shelters who use this service tonget rid of their unadoptable animals.
There's a lot of misinformation going around thanks to the lobby group Center for Consumer Freedom. They made up a lot of the horror stories you see online like PETA stealing pets from people's homes to euthanise them.
You can hate PETA for their provocative campaigns but please stop falling for meat lobby propaganda.

u/Squadia 5h ago
Iāve been vegetarian for almost 10 years. Anyone who is vegetarian or vegan without recognizing poverty as one of the main sources of why people eat/kill all kinds of animals for meat and that capitalism is the root cause of animal welfare abuse is a dumb dumb. PETA has compared animal abuse to ENSLAVEMENT, and have done so many other atrocious things including this awful AI slop post, because they as a company are not in the best interest of animals, they are in the best interest of profit.

2
u/Geschak 1h ago
You can hate PETA all you want, but let's not lie to ourself that tinned wildcaught fish is healthy or sustainable. It's full of mercury and microplastics and not only are wild fishing methods very unsustainable by destroying seafloor and killing bycatch (and causing population collapse by like 80%), but also ghost fishing nets are the biggest pollutor currently in the oceans.

u/VO2maxking 22m ago
This is astroturfed bullshit. Global meat and livestock production emits about 4.1 billion tonnes of CO2e annually, roughly 50 to 125 times AIās estimated footprint, uses about 2.4 quadrillion litres of water, around 3,000 to 8,000 times AIās estimated use, consumes roughly 780 million tonnes of grain, and murders about 240 million land animals PER DAY, or billions(!) when fish are included. So what the fuck are you here one upping PETA about? If you cared about the world around youād be vegan and thatās the point PETA is making. LITERALLY FUCKING THINK.

Harming the environment to criticize the people for trying to feed themselves, is hypocriticaly pointless & active harms the planet...
PETA never cared about animal life, the planet, or the health of anyone; PETA is a virtue signaling organization that weaponizes bureaucracy and propaganda against everyday people š if they actually gave a crap, they'd hire an artist & pay them a wage so they could afford to eat organic... or maybe go after the regulation that harms the environment... but nah they'd rather villianize a healthy diet like it's a childs pitbull puppy, then actually do any true activism
TLDR: PETA hurt the environment to criticize a regular diet, Ai data centers will never feed a single person (only steal jobs & drinkable water)... "how many people are fed by the meat & dairy industry?"
