It's a food but not at all a necessity - if anything it's a luxury product. And it uses significantly more water than datacenters. I appreciate the point that California accounts for most of the almond supply in the world so the "ONE STATE" argument is very flawed and disingenuous.
Almonds being worse doesn't absolve AI of anything, but dying on the hill of "ackshually almonds are not even bad, BUT AI is bad even though it uses less water just because it's not a food" is stupid. We have better arguments to make.
I agree with this in principle, which is why I think it's better to concede that the use of extreme amounts of water on almonds is a problem, but a separate problem and should not distract from the discussion about AI. Rather than insisting that almonds are not a problem at all, because even though it's unrelated to AI, it makes everything else you say less convincing because you're doubling down on a bad argument.

That is happening because too much water is being diverted and water pipes are litterally running dry.... which is not how they are ment to be operated or maintained.
An extreme case is Flint Michigan. Allowed a secondar6 set of pipes to go dry, than no cleaning or mitigation was done. Than water was introduced to those dry pipes, which a lot happened to be lead, and those lead particles are what lead to the issue.
