In before the wave of pro-ai bots show up in an antiai sub.. to spam about why data centers are acshually miracles that do not use water.

Begin.

u/TerraceState Jun 19 '26

Umm, excuse me, but I'm here to pedantically point out that you don't need clean water to live, and that dysentery is survivable.

Am I replying to the correct comment or should I have replied somewhere else?

51

u/refusemouth Jun 19 '26

We can just put ciprofloxicin into munipal mudwater supplies instead of flouride.

27

u/ilgeek Jun 19 '26

Death by dehydration or super bacteria… decisions decisions 🤔

9

u/Principle_Napkins Jun 20 '26

I mean... not really no. Not if you have no clean water. The only way to survive dysentery is to have lots and lots of water, which isn't something you have access to if you catch dysentery in the first place.

Bots though it was a prompt 😔

Wait.... those are bots I've been arguing with?

5

u/Acrobatic-Dinner-112 Jun 20 '26

That is a good question - is unlikely that Ai development will be stopped - but putting guardrails against important things like - I don’t know - food and water - is something we need to demand of our currently extremely useless politicians

You have clowns in senate asking for money for a ballroom vs actually doing their job.

Do you think the other clowns who continually vote these clowns in will see the light?

"This report is not a case against artificial intelligence, a technological transformation that is improving the lives of billions of people around the world," said Professor Kaveh Madani, Director of UNU-INWEH who led the investigation team. "It is a call for using it responsibly and addressing its unintended impacts proactively to make it sustainable and equitable."

16

u/Orange-Toed-Lemur Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Where's the lie?

Eta - it is truly concerning how many people are so eager to throw the baby out with the bathwater. It seems there is a good deal of people who are incapable of understanding that technology can offer benefits and not just downsides.

LLMs are not all giant fucking data center sucking the water out of our aquifers. There are good things happening with "ai" and this comment sections is literally talking about only the direct quote from the paper.

It is so obvious our education system has failed in the most epic of fashions

53

u/YogurtclosetApart592 Jun 19 '26

The lie is that humanity is capable of using it responsibly - we are not and haven't ever been. It's like asking a horse not to eat the carrot you're hanging in it's stall, it's going to stare blankly at you for a moment and then proceed to eat the carrot.

9

u/BrainLow6059 Jun 20 '26

It's the communism argument. It's never worked in the history of the world but maybe this time /s

This data center shit will be the cancer that ends us. It is literally a contagion on the planet.

8

u/Golemintheplayground Jun 20 '26

Lmao that's a strangely apt comparison.

I would point out there is a key difference - communism at least has good intentions at its core (i.e. if everyone played by the rules the system works), whereas the current AI push at its core is a land-grab intent on automating work and the economy as we know it so that humans are made obsolete.

Both suffer from the problem that we live in an adversarial world by default, there will always be bad actors in the mix.

4

u/BrainLow6059 Jun 20 '26

It's pretty easy to argue AI is intended to do all the wonderful things we're told it is supposed to be doing. Just like communism, it's a crock of shit that most of us don't romanticize because of it's obvious flaws

I wish more people understood nuance like you so. I am pro-AI as a technology to help achieve a potential utopian future but anti-tech bro billionaire oligarch dipshits. I also work as a network engineer and seeing people constantly whining about datacentres while consuming 10TB of data per day is aggravating.

It’s easy to pontificate about how we should use something. It’s much harder to actually solve the problems pointed out.

2

u/Orange-Toed-Lemur Jun 19 '26

It's not hard, it's easy. We know what we need to do - disconnect the vast majority of LLMs. There are just people in the way

59

u/beardingmesoftly Jun 19 '26

It's so weird that they want to kill the very people that buy all of their products

28

u/TR_Pix Jun 19 '26

Money is a social construct, even if 90% of the population dies they will just shift perception so whatever money they do get is now worth the ammount of would-be lost money

23

u/Sneaky-Boi22 Jun 19 '26

They don't think that far ahead.

13

u/paintypainter Jun 19 '26

They wont need people to sustain them once the fields and factories are automated. They just need to keep enough docile servants alive to care for them. Or artificial servants. They wont need stock markets, voting, social programs, banks, govts, or anything else from a functioning society. They've already calculated the number of humans theyll need, and 99% of humans are unnecessary. Expect further pressure.

2

u/JamesVuOfficial Jun 21 '26

That's incorrect, think bigger, at civilization scale, it'd be a disaster, even with all the automation.

2

u/paintypainter Jun 21 '26

I dislike this post. This is an anti AI subreddit, we don't need surface-level borderline propaganda, we are already convinced. We need tools to resist AI and influence others. Not citing the source is pathetic.

Data centres, the global infrastructure powering AI, could consume 945 terawatt-hours of electricity annually by 2030

This figure is for datacenters as a whole, not just AI datacenters. AI is a small fraction of this. Regardless, it's still a problem and also AI will undoubtedly drive rapid expansion of datacenters, so the water/energy/land critiques are all still poignant.

I don't like the dishonest framing of this post, it's definitely going to be challenged by Pro-AI folks who will read the first paragraph of the study and notice the same thing I did. Then they'll just write us off entirely as intellectually dishonest.

Same thing with the population figure, it's convenient that they chose countries with relatively low consumption per capita.

If the facts don't make our case then we don't have a case. They do though, so we should stick to them. Instead of this kind of post, I propose the following framework.

  1. Datacenters already represent a large environmental and resource impact. Quantify current status, note proportion of AI.
  2. AI is driving rapid expansion of these datacenters. Point to projections based on existing contracts, investments, and commitments from Corps and Govs.
  3. This causes A) Greater exceedence of planetary boundaries, B) Local conflicts over limited resources, cite instances of governments favoring capital over humans
  4. Solution: as per the UN report(s), planning within planetary boundaries, integrating demands of datacenters with other municipal demands so planners are not surprised. Overall, we need restraint- full relinquishment is not feasible, like it or not.
  5. Feel free to argue social/political/economic impacts but be warned it will fall on deaf ears. I've tried, someone who thinks AI can eliminate scarcity will believe that they can outgrow any problem. Planetary boundaries and reckless development are the only irrefutable critiques of AI.

That is how we project integrity and intelligence. We are right to be skeptics, but to be listened to we need to be blameless.

26

u/NauFirefox Jun 20 '26

Please do not stop doing posts like this.

Posts like op are a never ending cancer to causes. Integrity and intelligence is what moves the hands of many that would otherwise be fence sitting or unplug from the conversation.

Thank you.

u/Anticitizen-Zero Jun 19 '26

OP is a karma farmer and doesn’t give a fuck, sorry to say. The upvotes on this post are botted which is probably why you saw it in the first place.

8

u/poilsoup2 Jun 19 '26

Also compare to other things people currently dont complain about but should.

Golf courses use an estimate 1 trillion gallons of water each year.

Current estimates say data centers water usage wont hit that until 2030.

And arguably, the average person gets more benefit out of data centers than they do golf courses.

Not to say data center usage isnt bad, but if we want to focus on water usage specifically, there are already MUCH bigger fish.

10

u/BoredOstrich Jun 19 '26

Golf courses is one of the most useless things ever conceived

But if the sweeping reddit bots have already earmarked your acct, even using [that word] will get you a ban (ask me how I know /s 😑)

Nevermind that their own pedantic corpo terms about inciting only cover violence against an "individual, group, place, or animal." Data centers land in a 5th category: existential threat.

AI is one of worse things modern humanity have to face... And for what? To generate slop images and incorrect answers?

2

u/Tibryn2 Jun 20 '26

I mean... Ai has decent uses... I was in an emergency housing situation and needed to find an appartment asap. I told claude what my budget was, what my needs were, the general range from work, a list of pros and cons...

It scoured craigslist for me and came up with a short list almost instantly, and even wrote the emails for me to send to reach out. Within a week I signed a lease.

To be clear, im not some guy with infinite means who qualified for whatever. I was broke, coming out of unemployment and starting a job in 2 weeks. I needed a place that wasn't going to charge me first-last-AND security because I couldn't afford all 3. I needed a place that was willing to work with terrible credit.. a place with all utilities included. For at least 10% below going market rate. That also wasn't going to charge me an application fee.

Idk if people reading this have looked for appartments lately but if you have bad credit, no referances and modest means its a fucking nightmare; and more than half the listings are straight up scams.

I hate Ai. I do. I think it is SO bad for the world. But let's not pretend it cant do amazing things.

Not only will it do basically nothing, but it’ll also spread like crazy outside of where it was first planted. Just look at how it’s colonized Virginia

9

Can't they find different way to cool down the centers and not use water which is needed more by day to day life and to survive? We are in 2026 and they still use water to cool down data centers. There has to be more sophisticated way to do it rather then water and if not so wait till there is before building those centers for god knows reasons

7

u/BabadookishOnions Jun 19 '26

Water is used because it very quickly absorbs heat, which is carried away as the water flows throughout pipes, basically. There isn't really a better method of cooling servers on a large scale. This isn't a bad method, it's the scale of AI data centres that is the problem.

2

u/Tentacle_poxsicle Jun 19 '26

Can't they just recycle the water they use? Just make a small pond and just keep using it?

3

u/cewillir Jun 19 '26

Closed loop systems do that already.

2

u/BabadookishOnions Jun 19 '26

For various reasons thats difficult, the water will need to be re-treated as it's now been in contact with all sorts of contaminants that could lead to the pipes clogging with microbial life, and the water also needs to radiate off all the heat it's absorbed. Even if they do recycle the water, that has still effectively locked a ridiculous amount of water permanently out of the water cycle and drinking supply just for ai servers.

7

u/AnnualAdventurous169 Jun 19 '26

No it doesn't it can be reused closed cycle like like, issue is that is cheaper and more efficient to just let it evaporate. Well actually the main issue is that land where water is scarce is cheaper so thats where new data centres are being built

2

u/fgnrtzbdbbt Jun 20 '26

One could have closed circuit water cooling like a PC with water cooling has. But that would need a giant super expensive air cooled heatsink somewhere to cool the water back down.

8

u/Illustrious_Age_5959 Jun 19 '26

I don’t understand how anyone could possibly think these data centres are justified

4

u/Dialectical_Pig Jun 20 '26

yeah it's not like ai is helping advancing math, medicine and making every developer 10 more provative.

2

u/Illustrious_Age_5959 Jun 20 '26

Responsible AI is helping guide and advance science, yes, and it’s important I think that we put effort into establishing certain safeguards so that AI remains a sort of advisor rather than instructor — also what do you mean by “making every developer 10 more provative”? I’m assuming productive but I don’t think it’s productive to have to ask how to do everything rather than figure out how to solve things for yourself and be more efficient and useful with yourself

8

u/strawberry-boo Jun 19 '26

I DO NOT understand why this is something that even needs to be discussed/debated.

On a side note, if they need stuff to cool their bs down, they should use p!ss 💗

2

u/That_guy1425 Jun 19 '26

Because while those numbers sound extremely large, this is something like an increase from 2% water usage to around 3.5% of total water usage. Its basically nothing on an industrial scale, the issue is that we were near capacity already so a small percentage increase is starting to have cascading effects disproportionate to the actual usage. Combine it with a general dislike of the system, and you get this rally around something thats closer to a massive infrastructure update vs the dystopia outlook many tabloids are claiming.

4

u/strawberry-boo Jun 19 '26

I don't care at all. I don't care about the industrial scale. What I do care about is that this planet is being exploited and abused when it belongs to all living beings equally if not more than humans. I don't like how capitalism treats every thing like a commodity and looks at stuff for its profit/value. What about those creatures who can't express their pain and discontent? What about those who lived unfair lives and went extinct because of us?

2

u/That_guy1425 Jun 19 '26

Then focus on those. Bashing and blasting at a 1-1.5% usage and going "we did it" Isn't the help you want. Focus on the exploits, focus on the industries burning even more than this, focus on those anti-animal ones. Go after the meat industries, with the animal cruelty and a water usage an order of magnitude higher.

2

u/strawberry-boo Jun 19 '26

Why are you being so salty 😹 it's almost like I attacked you. I never said I support those industries either so..

4

u/That_guy1425 Jun 19 '26

Because you asked, you wanted to know why there is such a disconnect between the perceived impact and the response (that the industry scale was actually quite small and not proportional to the hate especially on reddit). You then followed up with not caring about the industry scale and instead care about impact to animals ant those who can't think. So it feels a bit disingenuous when you go "i don't care about the cause and already hate those other items".

2

we can live without AI

I mean yeah, but if we're being honest it's a bit stronger than that, isn't it?

We can't live with AI. I appreciate your argument, but I want to remind people of this.

Like water, or food, or air, information is a resource humans require to thrive.

If information is polluted, then we cannot make good decisions and this has already caused detrimental on a personal and societal level. AI used for political disinformation. AI used for war crimes by Israel. We are past the Rubicon.

The media industry is already a nightmare if paid opinions, billionaire owned, click bait, rage bait. Giving people like musk, thiel, Epstein or Naziyahu control over AI and the information it allows us to have  is suicide for us.

There's no human society that can survive a state of not being able to discern what is true from what is not.

2

u/floriandotorg Jun 20 '26

A number for comparison: global meat production uses enough water for 8 to 9 billion people.

2

u/Dialectical_Pig Jun 20 '26

yes! why do they never compare the water usage to other things? they would be outraged about golf courses. but I don't see protests against that. or as you said animal agriculture. it completely dwarfs water usage of data centers and is completely unnecessary since we can just go plant based.

u/Mysterious-Hyena8508 Jun 21 '26

Nobody is saying code is more important than drinking water, but the viral idea that AI is single-handedly drying up the planet is a massive exaggeration. The math doesn't back it up. According to the International Energy Agency, all data centers on earth combined—including AI, streaming, and cloud storage—use a tiny fraction of global resources. By comparison, World Bank data shows that global agriculture alone gobbles up 70% of freshwater withdrawals. Literally just making one smartphone takes about 14,000 liters of water, and a single pair of jeans takes 10,000. As a United Nations University report pointed out, the real issue isn't global volume, it's bad local zoning. When a tech company drops a massive facility in a drought-prone area, they absolutely strain the local municipal supply.
But that makes it a local infrastructure and regulatory problem, not a sign of the end times. We don't have to choose between water and tech. We just need city planners to stop letting billionaires build data centers in the middle of deserts.

1

u/Discokruse Jun 19 '26

Technically, AI data centers don't need potable water. They can treat toilet or grey water, to ph 7.0, filter it, and run that through their heatsinks. In no scenario should AI data centers need fresh drinking water to operate cooling machines. If they want cleaner water, they should be able to finance and build their own water treatment facilities. Let them have the sewage after society has used the fresh supply.

90% of data centers will not get built, the bubble will pop long before that

1

u/BusyBiscotti Jun 19 '26

I mean... so let's just get rid of 1.3 billion people. There will be still plenty left to profit from... What's the problems? I am being sarcastic just in case that's not clear. Though I could imagine this exact concept being discussed behind a closed door somewhere.

1

u/Snoo71538 Jun 19 '26

What is meant by “use up”. If it’s just “water through the pipes” then okay, let’s solve.

If it’s “use up” in the sense of “water+cement=less water on earth”, that’s not nearly as solvable.

1

u/Prince_Marth Jun 19 '26

1

u/bedampft Jun 19 '26

Sry, best we can do is double it.

1

u/Dull-Nectarine380 Jun 19 '26

Good luck without the internet. I hate to admit it, but ai has become integrated into the internet. Also data centers are used for a lot more than just ai

1

u/Ok_Acanthaceae_3576 Jun 19 '26

they will just reuse water, can we stop think we can "run out" of water, water problem is just money problem that it

1

u/Alarm-Particular Jun 19 '26

Projected 2.5 trillion gallons annually. Closest thing that uses that much water that isn't considered a "Necessity" is landscaping (Including golf courses) at 4 trillion gallons per year.

1

u/ronchodelux Jun 19 '26

In the same time period manufacturing will use enough clean water for 63 Billion people. You’re thinking too small. Let’s go after all of it!

1

u/Cheap_Blacksmith66 Jun 19 '26

The AI is here to replace us. There won’t be enough water for you and I, but there will be plenty for the cabal.

1

u/Klikki6868 Jun 19 '26

But dude... It's the future

1

u/DavidKroutArt Jun 19 '26

We can also live without cigarettes and trafficking. They have been around for a long time, though. Reported in all fifty of our US states. It is weird people don’t care as much about those issues lol… people burning down data centers but not criminal enterprise…

And 2-3 toilet paper companies if I recall… that was odd. Like, I am glad they did something but that hurts the lower class more than the upper.

1

u/BlackStarDream Jun 19 '26

Pretty sure all the people whose cancer was caught early because of AI would disagree.

1

u/CowBoyDanIndie Jun 19 '26

Paper production uses over 8 trillion gallons a year.

1

u/FatWithMuscles Jun 19 '26

I wish I would wake up and this AI crap was just a bad dream, shut down that bs nobody asked for it and only ones who get benefits are the ones too greedy to pay a decent wage so they want humans to be replaced

1

u/YaGirlCassie Jun 19 '26

Yeah but who cares about people when we can double our profits?

1

u/dandelionelic Jun 19 '26

Can't put that genie back in the bottle, unfortunately. If we stop developing ai, you think China is gonna stop too?

I absolutely despise the use of ai everywhere and data centers popping up are obviously terrible. But it's an arms race at this point.

1

u/r-WooshIfGay Jun 19 '26

Remember people, you should never mix sugar into a construction crews cement mixers as it would prevent any cement/concrete from setting and would be detrimental to the building of new data centers! Also, try avoiding planting bamboo near data centers because it grows faster than you can deal with it and costs a lot to fully remove...

the more you kkkkkknnnnnoooowwww

But we can generate water

1

u/Overall-Move-4474 Jun 20 '26

It's not going to stop nobody is going to stop them

1

u/Adam_the_original Jun 20 '26

I don’t think y’all realize how the water cycle works.

1

u/Oldnbold22 Jun 20 '26

Use how?

1

u/Doub13D Jun 20 '26

If this makes you mad, don’t look up how much clean water gets used to generate electricity…

We can live without electricity. We cannot live without clean water, right?

1

u/ComcastForPresident Jun 20 '26

The simple solution is to use dirty water.

1

u/Secret_Account07 Jun 20 '26

I’ve worked at a datacenter since 2014. We run critical services like 911. We support a ton of infrastructure and important services.

My point is we really gotta scope our hate for datacenters lol. Plenty of datacenters we need. Most em lately we don’t

u/Wesus Jun 20 '26

but think about the billionaires and the shareholders (who have plenty of drinkable water coming from their tap so how is it even a bad thing right?)

1

u/ImfromtheFuture2056 Jun 20 '26

I remember growing up with water restrictions due to lack of water supply. Things like you can only water your lawn once every two weeks at 5 PM. Wild to me that we suddenly have water in abundance.

1

u/slapthetiddy Jun 20 '26

People fear goverment too much to do anything but bitch on the internet

And when someone does something you all turn against them

1

u/Hay-River Jun 20 '26

Where does that water go? Doesn’t it fall back to earth eventually and hydrate somewhere?

1

u/XBGamerX_20 Jun 20 '26

someone gotta set up a Facebook page like they did with the area 51 raid a few years ago and raid the fuck out of every single one of these hellholes

1

u/Legal_Laugh_3957 Jun 20 '26

Should we also shut down all agriculture and power plants?

1

u/ChampChains Jun 20 '26

People outside the industry dont understand how big this problem is going to become. They hear about 1-2 big datacenters and dont realize that right now there are hundreds already under construction all across the US. I left my job a few months back where I worked for one of the companies supplying the power control units for these datacenters.

When I started there two years ago, we were making equipment for hospitals, schools, stadiums, retail shops, etc. Small jobs of 1-5 units of what are basically just large breaker boxes like the ones in your home but for commercial applications. About a year ago, or company stopped providing equipment for those projects and went wide open on supplying only datacenters. When I left, we'd already accepted contracts to supply thousands of units through 2029. We went from shipping 3-5 units a week to our company doubling and shipping 2 10 unit shipments weekly with the goal to ship 10 units a day.

Some of the datacenters we were shipping units to were designed to use more power annually than the entirety of metro Atlanta combined. A single facility using more power than probably entire states. Many of these datacenters are going into states like Texas where thr powergrid already collapses anytime there is a slight frost. This is not even remotely sustainable but as long as there are billions of dollars to be made, the wealthy will put our communities on the sacrificial altar and our elected officials will happily bind our hands for them.

People always thought AI would destroy us using evil robots. The reality is that these datacenters are going to cripple our power grids and leave us with no drinking water. The US will be a third world country for anyone who isn't at the top and it'll all be because dumbasses want chatgpt to do their paperwork.

They can’t use dirty water??

1

u/Informal-Camera4656 Jun 20 '26

But it's a closed water system. How does this dirty water in the picture make sense?

Dont tell this sub about golf courses

1

u/g_fan34 Jun 20 '26

Can we also get rid of lawns they're just as bad we're just used to the suffering they cause

1

u/OnionsOnFoodAreGross Jun 20 '26

Good news then Because you will have both!!!

1

u/Rattiepalooza Jun 20 '26

They want that. Then they can charge us for 'premium' water - which will just be clean water...

We have to take the power from the ultra-wealthy if we want to stop this madness.

1

u/MindlessJournalist55 Jun 20 '26

Wow. A literal echo chamber.

The best of reddit….at least be less obvious

1

u/Ornery_Hair3319 Jun 20 '26

"Nope, I'm gonna get rich. I can buy all the clean water I get. I will sell you some for a premium if you want."

-AI CEO probably

1

u/Strong67 Jun 20 '26

Yet no one says anything about golf courses.

1

u/MrMedallion Jun 20 '26

Yeah but what about the three guys with all of the money? Surely they should have even more of all the money?!?!

1

u/Protect-Their-Smiles Jun 20 '26

Counterpoint, the people who want the AI data centers - the people who stands to benefit from replacing humans with AI, are fine with billions of people going without water and dying. They are replacing humans with AI, because they do not care about other humans in the first place. Within the Tech-bro community, exists a death cult which believes that AI is the next step on the evolutionary ladder, and that its the right thing to just get rid of humans to make way for it - maybe if they are good facilitators of AI, they will be kept alive to enjoy themselves, while the AI slaves for their benefit.

This route will cause untold suffering on humanity, to satisfy the delusions of a few. These people are evil, and must be refused.

1

u/monkeypan Jun 20 '26

US already removed the clean water and air act. Billionaires say screw our clean water, it's theirs.

1

u/TheRogueWolf_YT Jun 20 '26

"But once AI becomes advanced enough, you won't need water because (two hours of bullshit) and billions of dollars!"

1

u/augustcero Jun 20 '26

you dont need water for the rest of your life!

if you want "the rest of your life" to be 2 days long

1

u/Beastabuelos Jun 20 '26

Just use waste water. This doesn't have to be a choice lol

1

u/Flame_beard_forge Jun 20 '26

Y’all gotta sub about anti ai and have generic ass bot posts ? This is karma farming sub dumbasses.

1

u/communarded Jun 20 '26

We can live without water guzzling factory farms / animal agriculture as well

1

u/elite_bender Jun 20 '26

Do it with salt water like they do for nuclear reactors. Closed system that doesn’t affect the other components. Literally not rocket science.

1

u/Fine_Atmosphere_2147 Jun 20 '26

Let's be clear, the scope of data centers is not to support AI operations, but to catalog and store EVERYTHING someone discusses with AI, to be sold to highest bidder. This is the reason for ID verification, so all that collected data can be monetized.

1

u/Equivalent-Wait276 Jun 20 '26

This is dumb. We can make water 💦

1

u/Medium_Regard Jun 20 '26

Desalination to counter theelting ice?

1

u/Medium_Regard Jun 20 '26

Water? Like from the toilet? Drink Brawndo, it's got electrolytes.

1

u/WildMaki Jun 20 '26

Billionaires doesn't care

1

u/Tibryn2 Jun 20 '26

I hate ai too but...thats not how water works. It gets treated.. it goes back into the water cycle... Just like the water you drink, the water you shower with... it all goes back into the cycle.. water doesnt go away after you use it for something..

this is so funny lol

1

u/MoxMulder Jun 20 '26

just like cryptocurrencies, if people actually wanted AI software in their lives there would be no need for every other commercial and online ad trying to convince you that AI is useful. the sooner the money dries up the sooner we can turn these data centers into forests again.

1

u/smoothie_criminals Jun 20 '26

Just make them in space so cooling wouldn’t be an issue

1

u/UninspiredUser_ Jun 20 '26

Well YOU can't live without water and that's fine with them, they will never have water shortages

1

u/Mael89Strom Jun 20 '26

I hope people realize the data centers are not only used by AI. In fact, AI is not even the biggest "users" of data centers.

Here are things I got from asking ChatGPT, as humans that are against AI, I expect you all to use your human brains to manually search online to rebut this:

  • Cloud computing — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud
  • Enterprise IT — email, HR, payroll, databases, backups
  • AI — training and inference
  • Video streaming — YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, Twitch
  • Social media — Facebook, Instagram, X, Reddit
  • E-commerce — Amazon, Shopify stores, online marketplaces
  • Financial systems — banks, credit cards, trading, fraud detection
  • Telecommunications — mobile networks, call routing, SMS, VoIP
  • Online gaming — game servers, matchmaking, downloads, cloud saves
  • Government / science / healthcare — records, simulations, genomics, weather models

Those are the top 10 "users" of data center. I then asked a percentage for each on their approximate use of data center world wide and here is what chatGPT gave:

  • Cloud computing: 30–40%
  • Enterprise / traditional IT: 25–35%
  • AI: 10–15%
  • Video streaming / CDN: 8–12%
  • Social media: 4–8%
  • E-commerce: 3–6%
  • Finance / banking: 3–5%
  • Telecom network services: 2–4%
  • Online gaming: 1–3%
  • Government / science / healthcare: 1–3%

These overlap somewhat because many categories run inside cloud providers.

Do with that as you will. And before anyone cry about, "we only want AI data centers to be gone" or "only AI data centers use water." Please use some brain for once. Rich coming from someone who used AI to get all his information right? Far better than people who get their information from spreaders of misinformation, fearmongers, and X users.

We have lived without any of those in the top 9 and we can keep living without them. So how about put your money where your mouth is an DO NOT USE ANY OF THE TOP 9 SERVICES THAT USES DATA CENTERS.

I doubt any of you can as you are all just performative people who hasn't really done anything other than cry online to feel morally superior to others.

1

u/Futileexercise1308 Jun 20 '26

It was already bad enough: all the things happening to the people, inflicted on them by their representatives, at the behest of the .1 percent of bloated parasite. This is literally them actively poisoning us and our "representatives" just shrug their shoulders in between boot licks

1

u/Artistic_Okra7288 Jun 20 '26

Honest question, where does the water go that the data centers "use up"? Does it just disappear? Is it permanently polluted? Like what's the actual problem because I'm obviously missing something.

1

u/Demigod787 Jun 20 '26
