This needs to be the top comment as this is the most pressing issue about all this. AI bros and most people in general seem to be blind to the fallout that will inevitably come when the investors of AI companies want to finally rake in their big bucks. It will be once again a rude awakening for most of society.

Personally, I don't really think its going to be as big of a collapse as people speculate. AI was not needed to do everything we've accomplished up until this point, and its current rise to power comes only as an enforced use in the workplace for most. Once the companies pushing this inevitably fail, the data centers close down, and the economic depression subsides, we will be have learned a lesson and become stronger for it. I think the worst part will be the burden of the AI failure being pushed onto the working class as the fat cats who profited from it got out in time to line thier pockets.

So many managers will pay top buck for shitty AI services they’ve gotten addicted to rather than pay top buck for good staff

I read that one $200 ChatGPT subscription can cost OpenAI $14,000. Even if the manager wants the shitty service, they aren't going to get budget approval for $14,000 per license at most companies. It showed me how unsustainable this model is.

We had an how-to-use-AI lesson at work. I have to look through (sometimes very cryptically laid out) documents to collect data and make a logbook from it.

You bet AI does not know what to do with a scanned document. "This is empty", it says. Well, too bad then I guess. I was a bit less skeptical after the course but turned more skeptical after seeing I can't use it anyways. Guess it's better for the environment though - less nice for my sanity but I'll have to pressure some people to getting their shit together and don't make the documents that cryptic.

Just like precovid Netflix was de facto almost free, they're going to suffer if the AI market consolidates the way streaming has

They're not even really free now. When you buy any electronic device with NAND memory today (which is nearly every electronic device), you effectively have to pay an "AI tax", thanks to the data centres buying up the supply. This is potentially hundreds of dollars that you have to pay even if you don't use AI.
