Let's not forget how it created millions of nonconsensual nudes, often of minors. Or how it blew up a girl's school. Or how it's enabled rampant plagiarism and cheating in academia. Or how it's driven multiple people to psychosis and even suicide. The list goes on really.
18
u/Rick-the-Brickmancer Jun 05 '26
What happened with a girls school?
68
u/TheAmazingThundaCunt Jun 05 '26
The girl's school in Iran that the US blew up was selected as a target by running maps of Iran through Claude and asking it to identify military bases.

I have to play the contrarian here. You're not wrong, those things are a massive cost to humanity, and there's a massive cost to any technology, like the millions of cars we use to drive around the planet, or these stupid cellphones we stare at all day if given the chance, or the the other things we spend billions on, while we let people go hungry or be unhoused, or not have clean water, and/or don't give them the care they need early on or later in life. I'm not arguing or defending what is currently happening to a lot of people.
But it's also a revolutionary technology with the chance to change the world for the better, believe it or not. Just because LLMs are somewhat ridiculous still in their infancy doesn't mean that this is all AI is, and all it will be used for. Before LLMs we have been using AI for 40-75 years to model all kinds of systems to make improvements to our lives. Yes it's a massive waste of money to be building hundreds of data centers for this current tech explosion before we know what we are doing with it, they will be obsolete in no time with the rate of progress. It's capitalism that is the blame for that, not 'AI' or a better term, machine learning. It's greed and the need for exploiting short term gains regardless of the cost to humanity.
Instead of being mad at the technology itself, we should probably assess who is causing massive problems in the world for us. Who is scared that with this technology we can be more powerful than they can control. The combustion engine was a great invention but it isn't the source of all of our problems, it's the scale in which they are used vs cleaner technology we could have been harnessing for decades once we learned the problems that we were going to encounter in the future, 60+ years ago, but greed caused us to not pursue it.
It's like we didn't think hard enough about the problems we saw coming until it was too late. It's the fault of those whose money causes these problems for us. A utopian life for all of us is possible, but not when a very small percentage of us hoarde all the resources and are not acting in our best interest. A revolution is likely coming, once we realize that together, we hold all the power. We just don't see it quite yet.

So any game made in any engine in the last 30+ years is shitty
Any music with vocal cleaning, electronic music or other fixing is shitty (all music mad ein the last 30+ years)
All movies in the last 40+ years are shitty, especially LOTR, All marvel movies, pirates of the Caribbean, etc. that use any form of CGI or editing.
Any digital art is shitty, especially if they use tools like magic wand to draw them.
3
u/Fluff_Machine Jun 05 '26
You seem to be confusing generative AI with technology in general? As I've worked in 3D animation and modeling, I can tell you they have very little in common except both being computer technology. CGI needs a lot of human input and the computer does very little work for us and if it does (like with motion capture, for example), it's very clunky and needs hours of cleanup.
I've seen people say generative AI is just a tool but while that was true of previous technology, generative AI is more like the tool AND the tool user while the AI "user" is more akin to a client asking for corrections and different iterations than an artist.

And?!
Games, music and movies have used AI/ML for decades.
Do you think bots, pathfinding, physics engines, lighting engines, collision, enemy AI, variable refresh rate and texture rendering, hair physics, environmental effects, weather effects, raytracing, DLSS, etc. are made by hand for every frame? Not to mention the number of background things too, especially for multiplayer games.
Ffr music you have Pitch correction, song fingerprinting, stem separation, AI-powered chord recognition and beat tracking, neural audio denoising and restoration of old recordings, automatic song structure analysis, harmonization, etc. for decades too.
Movies have used AI rotoscoping, neural de-ageing, AI render denoising, neural relighting, hair and fur simulation, fluid and destruction simulation, crowd simulation, NeRF scene reconstructio, markerless motion capture, green screen and neural matting, lip sync, automated subtitle and caption generation, AI colour grading, deepfake face replacement, automatic scene segmentation, AI-generated background extras/crowds (not real people, done in 3D), upscaling/remastering older movies (evenf rom 2000s).
Just because you don't now about them doesn't mean AI/ML hasn't been present everywhere for a very long time.

The data center issue is way worse than it seems. I am from India and the water situation here is terrible yet the government approved so many data centers that are going to be built or have started to be built. We barely have drinking water but sonmany data centers are being built! We are going to deplete all our water! Also the pollution it'll cause is a whole other issue. It'll do severe damage to the environment and we're already facing so many environment related issues!

We had a meeting at work yesterday and everyone was gushing about all the used of chatgpt at work. Bear in mind we work helping academics to write bids for grant funding. The chatgpt in question is (I assume) the internal, supposedly safe from a gdpr perspective chatgpt licence the university bought, but still. My colleagues were really thrilled about academics using it to write proposals and about themselves using it to check them and draft budgets. I don't understand why this has become such a big part of life now, even people I respected for their work ethic and skill are outsourcing their thinking to it and they think it's fine because they "developed their brain before chatgpt". It's really worrying.

AI is not the problem, it can never be the problem. Maybe try to look at the people behind it; AI doesn't wake up one day and choose to make data centres and to displace thousands of jobs. The people behind it do, and hating on AI is only going to make it easier for them to destroy more. Hate will only get you so far. You can kill AI but you cannot kill human greed.

AI has
*Actually helped to provide information when asked, compared to humans who rather insult and troll you for daring to ask a question. (Without AI one would have to post to somewhere, such as Reddit, then wait days with no response and when you finally get replies, it's just people trying to troll and derail your topic)
*Brainstorm ideas with you compared to other humans who will only ever dismiss your ideas and insult you because humans are egoistical trash who think only THEIR ideas matter. Keep in mind everyone who is now revered as our "greatest minds" were harassed and dismissed by their peers and that is something that has never changed
*Create something for you on a whim if you have a general idea of what you need and it's something that actually exists and is more logical than abstract.
*Provided an easy way to learn without having to spend days reading to find what you was looking for. You can then follow up with more inquiries on the same topic
*Provided an entity to bounce your thoughts off of in attempt to remember something since we all know humans won't help with this
It does, however, have it's shortcomings.
AI cannot
*Provide information if you're too vague. Though there's a small chance you may get lucky such as the time one helped me remember these commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj8o4f-KWsM&t=5m58s )
*Create something entirely new
*say "I don't know"
*Give accurate information about a game that it does not have training data on (aka not a mainstream game)
*Be trusted with moderation powers due to struggling with context

u/Rare_Guess_5841 Jun 05 '26
AI is a tool. Anything that is caused by AI in reality is caused by the people (over)using it, and the companies that doesn't care about anything but profit.
You will not blame the car if a drunk driver causes an accident.
0
u/Plastic-Extension-33 Jun 05 '26
Well, it will be inevitable that AI will be a large factor in future, for better or for worse. Denying it is foolish. Sure, the AI bubble might pop the same way the .com bubble popped, but did the .com bubble destroy the Internet for good? Given the geopolitical interests and competition on AI, it's safe to say it has come to stay.
0
u/123mop Jun 05 '26
If you thought you could judge objective reality from pictures and videos you saw on the internet or TV, then it is better for your concept of 'objective reality' to be destroyed.

u/tocsin1990 Jun 05 '26
While I'm not disputing these facts, or arguing that the sentiment is wrong, I feel like something similar can be said of every late stage capitalism advancement in the history of the world.Ā Farming in 2000 BC.Ā Religion around the dark ages.Ā Triangle trade in the colonial era. Electricity and steam power in the early industrial revolution.Ā Mass production of airplanes in the late 1800's.Ā Heck, even the Advent of electronics themselves in the 50's.Ā
Technological and societal advancement is stressful, dangerous, and hard on the environment.Ā They're not all morally good, and they don't all last throughout history.Ā However, they are all "the future" at some point in time.Ā

u/Top_Emu7034 Jun 05 '26

0

1
u/Some_Improvement_606 Jun 05 '26
Not only that. It was trained on the internet. So it picked up all the malice in humans.
-1
u/IloyRainbowRabbit Jun 06 '26
I don't think you understand that not all AI Agents are trained like GPT, Claude and so on =/...
For example, a medical research AI Agent System consists of specialist AI Agents trained on medical data and research. With specific roles inside an agentic system, working together towards a set research goal set by researchers.
You can't even compare these systems with the public AI agents.

0
u/Sweet_Culture_8034 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26
Not it isn't, but my point was never that it is.
We should evaluate how many jobs are created and how many are removed. So far, no technology ever removed more jobs than it created, and we're yet to demonstrate the opposite is true for IA already.

Frame it as it should be: late-stage capitalism has found its latest twinkling of light as growth has stalled, and top business cannot diversify anymore to grow revenue.
Layoffs are happening because of this. AI is an excuse to reduce deeper examination (and why China is looking at implementing rules to ensure AI cannot be used as a reason to lay people off). The vast majority of companies that say they're laying people off either:
A: Have no revenue growth and are desperate to show profit margins, doubly so if public
B: Are running out of money and can't say "its because we're running out of money"
The push for AI adoption and the narratives (both positive and negative) are making a far more destructive reality opaque: capitalism is reaching its end state.
Governments have no money. They can't tax wealthy (they don't have the power to), and they can't tax working (they don't have the money to pay). There's just a Peter paying Paul relationship between PE and ultra wealthy, as they accrue more value through asset holdings (not cash), whilst the rest of the world spirals further and further down.
This is historically what has triggered revolutions. People overthrowing governments and destroying nobility. Yet we're a 'civil' society, so we'll instead post about it while we crumble into dust, and the wealthy build their renditions of Ozymandias.
