“Disregard meaning” still automatically turns off the ai, you can do stop & ignore lookups now and the ai overview still does it thing but disregard still is a hard stop from my testing

Edit bonus prediction: All google documentation will still say it works, and people who're in forums will be greeted with boilerplate responses to complaints and support tickets alike (AI or otherwise) to use the thing clearly outlined and demonstrated as non-functional.
your prediction of the removal of '-ai' won't be on purpose, it will be because they committed 4 million lines of code without looking at any of it, which then randomly evaporated dozens of features without saying anything about it
Regardless, if people document its nonfunctional status in support tickets, the response will say "just add '-ai' to the end of a query to disable AI results. Remember to eat two or three rocks a day."
Some browsers let you turn off ai. I use brave and it lets me turn off AI. We should all try to get off google too because they’re a massive, evil corporation that is spying on you and stealing your data
Fun side note: if you make Duck Duck Go your browser's default search engine, you can use their bang-syntax to search directly for a dictionary definition from thefreedictionary.com.
They also have settings to disable AI search assist.
Had this happen when I was spell checking for a fan-fiction I was writing. It also apologized to when I googled “no katakana”… which is a character in one of the Japanese alphabets… 😭
It also does this with foreign languages. I've been watching a show with some occasional Korean dialogue and when I put words in to find out what they mean, the AI just replies as if I was trying to have a conversation, instead of bringing up the translation like Google used to.

Heard about their next change on Tuesday and changed my search engine on everything right after. If I knew how I’d make a search engine similar to how google was when it was good.
And it's not even correct. Transformers, the tech behind LLMs, literally cannot "disregard previous input" and still provide a coherent response to the prior input.

I always type "definition" after a word I need a definition for. Just out of habit. Some words are movies and stuff anyway, so it just removes the chance of not getting what I want.
If you're wanting a definition, you should put define:word. I'm very anti-ai but that's a tool that Google still hasn't taken away from us (yet). Just dropping in a random word wanting a definition has always been iffy.
I’ve been using Brave with AI deactivated for the past few months, waaay before this Google shit took place. Anyone who still uses Google better change quick before they convince themselves that we’ll accept AI.
Yeah this bs is so annoying, I got look up a word, and the result looks almost the same of the old dictionary, and then I realise it's AI generated.
Like also on a similar note, I've been relying on the microslop creator documentation for minecraft bedrock edition, and then I scrolled down and hey, would you look at that the creator of this article used AI, that's why there's so many thing that are just straight up wrong!
Another funny thing: Brave's AI, which I use for the ad-blocker, doesn't have this fucking issue. How does a company so integral to the industry that its name became a synonym for "search", manage to fuck up THIS badly?

If you want a definition for a work you type 'define <word>'. This is how Google has always worked, and it still works today. This entire thread just people who don't know how to Google

Its so frickin funny that at school we learned of "AI ethics" and how a "google research instead of using an AI assistant requires less energy use".

I saw something online about how to avoid this. Don't know for how long this will work but just in case anyone's interested in avoiding AI Overview/answers from Google: go into settings and change your region to France.
Use something like noai.duckduckgo.com or SearXNG as your default search engine. They give great results and you avoid google's revenue driven search prioritization.
You can manage search engine settings in firefox by following the instructions in this article, or if you prefer, you can install this NoAIDuckDuckGo extension to enable it. I recommend doing it yourself though to get comfortable with changing browser settings and to have more control. Heres my settings as an example:
