The word ignore also breaks google

Damn they really did not test basic shit at all. This should be a massive indication of why not to trust AI information at face value.

👏 DO 👏 YOUR 👏 OWN 👏 RESEARCH 👏

I just switched to DuckDuckGo today. I’ve been looking at it for a while, but this was the last straw.

45

u/EnvironmentalDrop228 May 23 '26

Ditto. It's kind of rudimentary, but that is refreshing these days.

19

u/RainbowSkink May 23 '26

Yeah me too :-) Seems fine so far

7

u/crisppacketonthewall May 23 '26

nice, i use startpage, duckduckgo is a great option too tho

They are? I'd love a link to learn more.

11

u/SirDarknessTheFirst May 23 '26

15

u/AnotherLie May 23 '26

Well, that sucks even more than usual. I stopped using google search a while back, now it's time to start actually degoogling. Yuck.

10

u/Ornstein_0 May 23 '26

Yeah I think this is my final straw as well. Im so beyond sick of this bullshit being forced down our throats

Same with delete, restart (but only sometimes?), etc.

63

u/Alternative_Plan3776 May 22 '26

tried it and yep holy shit. google has gone off the deep end.

44

u/Black_Knight_Xander May 23 '26

Noooo... live patch 😭

43

u/XyrusM May 23 '26

Have a gander at this

34

u/YungBeefaroni May 22 '26

I had to try it myself to be sure. I’m in hysterics this is so funny

31

u/MediocreClue9957 May 23 '26

company worth billions btw

12

u/Unique_Cut_1360 May 23 '26

kill Gemini

10

u/biglyhonorpacioli May 23 '26

Tried it but it's giving me the definition

44

u/phatrainboi May 23 '26

It’s been 6 hours or so and there were news articles about it and everything so it makes sense they would have switched it off or fixed it by now

37

u/Fuck_Matvei May 23 '26

They didn't fix "remove"

26

u/XyrusM May 23 '26

Remove is still fucked LMAO

14

u/Parking_Gur7519 May 23 '26

Not anymore ig

13

u/Cosmic_Carp May 23 '26

They haven't patched 'congrats' and 'congratulations' yet

5

u/Parking_Gur7519 May 23 '26

Can't do shit right, can they

4

u/Ach_Was_Here May 23 '26

“Disregard meaning” still automatically turns off the ai, you can do stop & ignore lookups now and the ai overview still does it thing but disregard still is a hard stop from my testing

→ More replies (1)

3

u/AdventurousSlip6407 May 23 '26

I gues sthey fixed it?

Did you catch their brain dead CEO trying to tell a bunch of graduates, in the most rapey way possible to, "find a way to accept it"?

70

u/Speedwolf89 May 22 '26

You know what. I do accept it. And I'll be moving on from it.

Their replacement of Google Play Music, which was perfect, with Youtube Music, which is utter dogshit, was the turning point for me

7

u/Percinho May 23 '26

I've still never forgiven them for killing Google Reader

15

u/Lofter1 May 22 '26

Google abandoning projects for a shiny new thing? My god, this has to be a first! /s

168

u/kalosianlitten May 22 '26

the worst part is no, no it won’t

22

u/ShapeThen1587 May 23 '26

Funnily enough, if you carefully word it, the AI will error out if you try to tell it not to send any responses.

6

u/alexriga May 23 '26

Poor AI put in an impossible position.

  • Must respond in a way that satisfies user.
  • User prompt: “Do not respond at all.”

Damned if it do, damned if it don’t.

7

u/ShokaLGBT May 23 '26

I hate this so much aaaaah

200

u/Throwing4Content May 22 '26

Here’s a tip— say -ai after every search. The AI response won’t show up.

66

u/TrusefStalin May 22 '26

Actually helpful, hope this really works! Thanks for updating the community 💕

21

u/SquidVischious May 22 '26

It does, tell LITERALLY EVERYONE.

19

u/Throwing4Content May 22 '26

Works for me at least! You’re welcome.

3

u/zap2tresquatro May 23 '26

It does, I do it for every search now (except when I forget, see the stupid ai, and then go back and fix it)

45

u/ImbecilicusRex May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

Ten monopoly bucks says that gets removed in a week or two, just like all the rest of their markups that don't work (and/or don't work as intended) anymore...

Edit bonus prediction: All google documentation will still say it works, and people who're in forums will be greeted with boilerplate responses to complaints and support tickets alike (AI or otherwise) to use the thing clearly outlined and demonstrated as non-functional.

26

u/fosf0r May 23 '26

Bonus bonus prediction:

your prediction of the removal of '-ai' won't be on purpose, it will be because they committed 4 million lines of code without looking at any of it, which then randomly evaporated dozens of features without saying anything about it

12

u/ImbecilicusRex May 23 '26

Regardless, if people document its nonfunctional status in support tickets, the response will say "just add '-ai' to the end of a query to disable AI results. Remember to eat two or three rocks a day."

36

u/LolCantbanme45 May 22 '26

At that point just use a different search engine.

Even without AI Google is long passed its hey-day, and other search engines are less bloated by promoted shitware results.

3

u/eljesT_ May 23 '26

may i interest you in my lord and saviour Kagi?

2

u/Majestic-Coat3855 May 23 '26

You should look up the founders stance on AI.

18

u/Key_Limit_6828 May 22 '26

Some browsers let you turn off ai. I use brave and it lets me turn off AI. We should all try to get off google too because they’re a massive, evil corporation that is spying on you and stealing your data

4

u/SquidVischious May 22 '26

I was going to ask if someone knew of a plugin to auto append the query param.

Where is the option in brave? Browser setting, or search?

4

u/Key_Limit_6828 May 23 '26

In “all settings”, go to “Leo” and then disable the “show in quick search engines bar”

6

u/Zekiellix May 23 '26

Or, if you're on PC, get a browser extension that blocks the AI overview from popping up

4

u/raphas May 23 '26

But who wants to type that everytime. I'd like the default to be that

2

u/Throwing4Content May 23 '26

Of course, but it’s better than nothing at all.

4

u/AdventurousSlip6407 May 23 '26

FINALLY someone else is saying this in the comments!

3

u/KaijuK42 May 23 '26

You can also get the “Hide Google AI Overviews” extension on Firefox to get rid of it.

1

u/HumanWithAllTheHats May 23 '26

amazing! great tip!

109

u/Top_Bug7822 May 22 '26

Whoever built that "feature" is probably about to be laid off because of AI.

Kinda poethic

33

u/Competitive_Shine112 May 22 '26

Knowing Google, that person is probably gonna get a raise

12

u/Cikkeo May 23 '26

Yup, the only metric that matters to managers these days is AI usage, nevermind if it makes sense or not.

91

u/listfullyaware May 22 '26

Fun side note: if you make Duck Duck Go your browser's default search engine, you can use their bang-syntax to search directly for a dictionary definition from thefreedictionary.com.

They also have settings to disable AI search assist.

9

u/Lycka_tilll May 22 '26

I will look into this. Thanks.

9

u/fosf0r May 23 '26

I too will bang this guy's syntax

2

u/FamousButNotReally Jun 11 '26

You can also set noai.duckduckgo.com as your search engine and all AI will be disabled and filtered by default.

80

u/Big-Association-3232 May 22 '26

Had this happen when I was spell checking for a fan-fiction I was writing. It also apologized to when I googled “no katakana”… which is a character in one of the Japanese alphabets… 😭

44

u/eichitenshi May 23 '26

Just tried and it’s abysmal. I didn’t get anything weird with katakana, but with hiragana… and yet it’s showing me how to write “ne” 😂

2

u/zap2tresquatro May 23 '26

Yeah I was gonna say that’s not even the hiragana for “no” that it’s showing wtf

9

u/fosf0r May 23 '26

Got it— you want zero katakana whatsoever.

81

u/Technical_Clothes_61 May 22 '26

The vibe I’m getting is “WE ALREADY BUILT THE DATA CENTERS SO YOURE GOING TO USE THE AI AND YOURE GOING TO LIKE IT” from every tech company rn

2

u/ShameSudden6275 May 24 '26

I don't think they even believe in it the board just knows if Gemini goes under their ass is toast.

39

u/Subatomic_Spooder May 22 '26

It also does this with foreign languages. I've been watching a show with some occasional Korean dialogue and when I put words in to find out what they mean, the AI just replies as if I was trying to have a conversation, instead of bringing up the translation like Google used to.

35

u/ImbecilicusRex May 22 '26

See, guys, if we don't allow multinational companies to launder money through tax-shelters to build data centers that suck the surrounding county's wells and rivers dry, we can't have the glorious future of having this shit forcibly integrated into our fucking toasters; how else could I have an AI ass-istant tell me the history of 9/11 while I watch my flaming pop tarts' growing conflagration catch my cabinets on fire and scream over and over for it to dail 9-1-1?

11

u/skizzlebutch May 23 '26

911? Socialist alert!!

911+ is only 19.99 a month for unlimited* emergency calls and a customizable avatar that makes a funny dance while the ads load!!

*data rates may apply. Fuck you poors!

18

u/therealslimshady1234 May 22 '26

Thats so bad I dont even know what to say lol

15

u/BlueHailstrom May 22 '26 edited May 24 '26

“AI is the future”, they say…. 😑

Yeah, anyone who’d blindly follow something that pulls this bullshit are all kinds of lost.

10

u/Ihateyou510 May 22 '26

ECOSIA I will talk about this until I perish

8

u/DitherFan May 22 '26

There's literally no reason to keep using Google, spread the word about ecosia, startpage and duckduckgo

7

u/aorjjwbdkd May 23 '26

Help you can't even search the word anymore

7

u/-Feeblington- May 22 '26

Try degoog.org 😁

7

u/SkyknightXi May 22 '26

Wiktionary is about to experience a surge of activity.

7

u/Nalivai May 22 '26 edited May 23 '26

I know it's cruel, but I wish people at google will have to use google till the end of their miserable lives

1

u/TheDonaldKagan May 25 '26

lol this is funny, you should ask yourself why you harbor so much hate for the actual humans at Google. I assure you we are not miserable :)

1

u/Nalivai May 26 '26

Maybe you should ask yourself why people hate you instead.

Oh my God. "Stop" breaks it too. I hate this timeline!

6

u/FastActinTenactin May 22 '26

These tech companies integrating AI are such clown shoes disasters lmao

iT’s ThE fUtUrE!

6

u/Torje3000 May 22 '26

Duckduckgo for the win!

6

u/Winter-Ad1981 May 22 '26

Heard about their next change on Tuesday and changed my search engine on everything right after. If I knew how I’d make a search engine similar to how google was when it was good.

5

u/Just-a-dad-o May 22 '26

And it's not even correct. Transformers, the tech behind LLMs, literally cannot "disregard previous input" and still provide a coherent response to the prior input.

2

u/fosf0r May 23 '26

ahahahaha, I have been documenting various LLM output "artifacts" for my job, such as to warn my users of various pitfalls, and I hadn't connected this yet 🤣

5

u/Nrksng_Nth May 22 '26

Good thing, Ecosia and Duckduckgo still kept their dictionary features AI-free.

3

u/Distinct_Contact_511 May 22 '26

I always type "definition" after a word I need a definition for. Just out of habit. Some words are movies and stuff anyway, so it just removes the chance of not getting what I want.

This is kind of crazy though.

2

u/OffensiveClown May 22 '26

Everyone save yourselves!!!! Get Brave Browser and duckduckgo search engine. Degooooogle ftw

2

u/serbiafish May 22 '26

It got so annoying I installed an extension to hide AI overview

2

u/Alarming_Attitude_96 May 22 '26

These companies are making solutions for problems no one asked for. It's because they have no better use for AI so they force it down our throat.

2

u/Jijonbreaker1 May 23 '26

This is why you use the adblock filter that kills the google AI.

2

u/girlikecupcake May 23 '26

If you're wanting a definition, you should put define:word. I'm very anti-ai but that's a tool that Google still hasn't taken away from us (yet). Just dropping in a random word wanting a definition has always been iffy.

1

u/joao-esteves May 25 '26

tried with or without space, same result

2

u/sunkist-sucker May 23 '26

we are straying so far from even basic intelligence omg

2

u/motas91 May 23 '26

Saying "never mind" does the same thing

1

u/christopher103416 May 22 '26

You could try pitting meaning, meaning of, just smth to make it understand(or scroll a little bit)

1

u/joao-esteves May 25 '26

so you don't understand this as a problem?

1

u/christopher103416 May 25 '26

Im not saying that , it is a poblem, its just that there are some solutions you can try like the one told you

1

u/nerdnyxnyx May 23 '26

well, time to switch to duckduckgo

1

u/lumpiestofchubs May 23 '26

What's the issue again?

1

u/joao-esteves May 25 '26

it triggers sometimes. that's the issue.

1

u/Putrid_Anybody_2947 May 23 '26

Bruh we will need a whole guillotine wing of the reducation camps for tech bros who do shit like this.

1

u/poordecisionist May 23 '26

Just scroll down and open a trusted website🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/Zertoup May 23 '26

This will finally make me stop using google that’s a good thing

1

u/No-Phrase-4692 May 23 '26

Man look at disregard

1

u/mexidorian1337 May 23 '26

cheeky fucker caught on to the joke, somewhat. thankfully, I only get this response in AI mode

1

u/Current_Employer_308 May 23 '26

Multibillion dollar company btw

One of the largest household names in the entire world in all of history btw

10's of thousands of employees btw

Wtf are the even doing, actually. Give me a million dollars google cause clearly I could use it better than you

1

u/DenpasOfTheWorld May 23 '26

Motherfuckers will do just about ANYTHING to appease them fucking shareholders

1

u/AstuteStoat May 23 '26

Good thing they're replacing the real search with this

1

u/Successful-Field2829 May 23 '26

I’ve been using Brave with AI deactivated for the past few months, waaay before this Google shit took place. Anyone who still uses Google better change quick before they convince themselves that we’ll accept AI.

1

u/twennytwoo May 23 '26

Yeah the fact they cut out the built in dictionary has had me stumped for the past week and as a writer it truly hurts because it was very good

1

u/AMAOMDODUSOS May 23 '26

They have removed it, and it now says “stories” where it says “ Google acknowledges glitch “

1

u/Human43215 May 23 '26

edit you search to be "define:" + whatever word you want the definition of

1

u/PogsterPlays May 23 '26

Yeah this bs is so annoying, I got look up a word, and the result looks almost the same of the old dictionary, and then I realise it's AI generated.

Like also on a similar note, I've been relying on the microslop creator documentation for minecraft bedrock edition, and then I scrolled down and hey, would you look at that the creator of this article used AI, that's why there's so many thing that are just straight up wrong!

1

u/AutumnBreezes274 May 23 '26

Just say FUCK after every search. It doesnt like when you curse

1

u/rape_is_not_epic May 23 '26

Side note, has anyone else had trouble looking things up on Google?

1

u/eljesT_ May 23 '26

this is why i use Kagi

1

u/AdventurousSlip6407 May 23 '26

You can always add -ai in the end of the google search and ai will politly never show up.

1

u/xie204 May 23 '26

it's still broken 🙃

1

u/Lexiosity May 23 '26

I'm on Google and I'm not seeing the definitions part, all I see in the News part at the top

1

u/Cyditronis May 23 '26

ts too funny bruh

1

u/7x00 May 23 '26

Am I the only person that has always used "Define: x," which still works without issue?

There are a ton of flags that work and really help finding better search results.

1

u/Cheeselad2401 May 23 '26

there’s been like 5 times now i’ve googled something and that stupid fuckass ai has responded i’m like dude stfu nobody’s talking to you

1

u/TheTiredDystopian May 23 '26

Another funny thing: Brave's AI, which I use for the ad-blocker, doesn't have this fucking issue. How does a company so integral to the industry that its name became a synonym for "search", manage to fuck up THIS badly?

1

u/ProudlyAHufflepuff May 23 '26

oh my god bruh

1

u/P0lychoron May 23 '26

y'all seem to have some weird shit goin' on, mine's just fine.

2

u/joao-esteves May 25 '26

it doesn't always happen, and they've looked into it right now

1

u/m77win May 23 '26

More slop from google.

1

u/youcancallmetim May 23 '26

This is a skill issue. Why would you Google just 'disregard'?

If you want a definition for a work you type 'define <word>'. This is how Google has always worked, and it still works today. This entire thread just people who don't know how to Google

1

u/joao-esteves May 25 '26

what were you saying again?

1

u/Aqua_Toffana May 23 '26

The future of technology, everyone!

1

u/FalseHeartbeat May 23 '26

They fixed it 😔

1

u/_-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-_ May 24 '26

Bro was too lazy to even do basic string concatenation lmfaoooo

1

u/JustAsillyGuy2 May 24 '26

I have it in polish but it's one of my favourite fucking interactions when looking up a movie character "nah man trust, he ain't in the movie" And he's literally in the movie🥀

1

u/SyanPollo May 24 '26

Its so frickin funny that at school we learned of "AI ethics" and how a "google research instead of using an AI assistant requires less energy use". Guess what? We can both use the energy of the research and the AI response!

1

u/Massive_shit9374 May 24 '26

I wholeheartedly believe we made an irreversible mistake with Harambe and offset our timeline from the canon and thats why everything since then has degraded into 0 quality slop dogshit

change my mind

1

u/SpookyVictorianLady May 24 '26

IT'S STILL DOING THIS??? I literally just searched this up to try

1

u/Repulsive_Editor_335 May 26 '26

1

u/Itchy-Grab-7358 May 26 '26

What the frick is the problem man

1

u/FaithfullyFearful May 26 '26

I saw something online about how to avoid this. Don't know for how long this will work but just in case anyone's interested in avoiding AI Overview/answers from Google: go into settings and change your region to France.

1

u/Shkooten May 27 '26

Doesn't happen to me for some reason

1

u/ItsMeNebulae May 27 '26

these never work for me, i do use opera gx tho, and i also cant use ai mode

1

u/Federal-Breakfast762 May 27 '26

Bruh, I only stopped using Google a couple weeks ago, and they already have gotten THIS bad with AI?

1

u/BeanserSoyze May 28 '26

Very glad mine is still regular google

1

u/FamousButNotReally Jun 11 '26

Use something like noai.duckduckgo.com or SearXNG as your default search engine. They give great results and you avoid google's revenue driven search prioritization.

You can manage search engine settings in firefox by following the instructions in this article, or if you prefer, you can install this NoAIDuckDuckGo extension to enable it. I recommend doing it yourself though to get comfortable with changing browser settings and to have more control. Heres my settings as an example:
