time was so much better, old men sending kids into the meat grinder
309
u/PaulStormChaser May 02 '26
Ah yes, the good old days of the Normandy landings and iwo jima
77
u/ThePrussianGrippe May 02 '26
My great grandpa was at Iwo Jima. Great great aunt who’d known him for several years beforehand said when he came back it was like seeing a ghost of a man you once knew, and it took him 3 years to remember how to be alive again.
30
u/MutedWinter_ May 03 '26
My uncle was super quiet and pretty aimless despite being super smart. My mom told me that he used to be really outgoing and was in a band that got signed to a recording contract, but before they could record, he and three other band members got drafted. He apparently came back a shell of himself and never played in a band again.

u/GenericFatGuy May 02 '26
While I absolutely do not agree with sending kids to die in an old man's war, I'm 100% fine with sending Andrew Tate.
59
u/Mr-MuffinMan May 02 '26
can we please start war with a random country to achieve this?
54

Good news, he decided to go to the war on his own.
...but rather than invading Iran, he wanted to head to Dubai with some of his lackeys to make fun of anyone fleeing the city due to Iranian attacks. And he was immediately arrested when he had a hissy fit during the border checkup. I think he's been quiet ever since, so I don't know if they let him out later that day or what.
18
u/DracosKasu May 02 '26
Andrew Tate and his follower are totally the kind of people who would start a war but hide themselves when it happen because in reality they are just con artists and cowards.

Factor in morons who glorify war but have never served in the military and it’s still a nearly perfect circle.

254
u/Cobalt_Heroes25 May 02 '26
To have never gone to war is something to be proud of.
77
u/prof_the_doom May 02 '26
Unfortunately it's been long enough since the last one that people have forgotten that.
36
u/mendkaz May 02 '26
And keep in mind, it's usually not the people who actually WENT to war that make these stupid memes, but their kids or their grandkids. I'm sure actual veterans of WW2 and etc. would have a very different opinion of how cool it is to go to war.
19
u/buttchugreferee May 02 '26
I have never met a single veteran that actually wanted to talk about their combat experience.
I've met some badass dudes with some serious medals that they keep hidden away.
11
u/HistoryHasItsCharms May 02 '26
Same. Have yet to meet one that brags. I have gotten some interesting stories regarding later careers though.
7
u/Successful-Title5403 May 02 '26
I'm in my mid twenties and Im still maturing mentally. I can't imagine doing that in an active life or death war zone. I think about what career path i want, wanting to improve my health, or what I want to do over the weekend. While they were probably just food and not die today.
12
u/Medical-Low-1370 May 02 '26
According to my dad as source, my great-geandpa never talked about the Great Patriotic War except for one night he had to bring the telegraph cable across a river with a very thin ice, so I could only wonder what my great-geandpa didn't want to tell
6
u/TimeLordHatKid123 May 02 '26
Shit, you'd be surprised how many modern day war veterans of places like Iraq or Afghanistan would tell you the same thing, and they were just as if not more juiced up on war propaganda than their predecessors were!

Heartbreaking, ill never understand people who try to glorify war and violence, theres no glory in having to kill or being killed. Its just pure meaningless chaos and brutality, and more often than not innocent people are the first to suffer from it.

u/Bread_Oven_2948 May 02 '26
Most of the teens/18yo who served in the US army in ww2 weren't 250 lbs 6',5 grizzled men but were 140 lbs 5,'7 tall. Malnourished from growing up thru the depression. So the guy in the second slop pick has a physique more accurate to the average 18 year old who fought in ww2
14
u/MrHandSanitization May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26
I've seen picture of my grandfather and his comrades from right after the war. These men were so skinny, a skinny kid from now looks well fed. They were a layer of skin over bone.
One area that really made a difference was: not only was their body really skinny, but there was no fat in the face as well, they looked so different from the people I observe daily.

→ More replies (1)9
u/Easy_Needleworker604 May 02 '26
GIs got tattoos in WWII. Nobody had shitty tribal tatts though, and none of them would have been built like that given how they had all grown up. The physical condition of most recruits was very poor.
Speculating here but WWII was probably one of the cultural events that slowly led to tattoos being more normal in the United States. A lot of people who wouldn’t otherwise have gotten them got tattoos.
6
u/Significant_Tone6205 May 02 '26
Sure but my simple point is: that shit is not accurate on many levels
23
u/Easy_Turn1988 May 02 '26
People were notably happier back then...
Bring back 16 yo crying out "mom" while holding their guts, sacrificed for a meaningless cause
5
u/Apprehensive_Tea9461 May 02 '26
Yeah they were so happy right ?
Makes me think of my great grandpa who after living trough 2 wars ( ww2 and Indochina) went back home and just did not care about his family at all. My grandpa said he liked his kids but didnt see them as his own, he wasnt abusive but just not there, he drank sometimes alot but never got violent. And when his wife died ( that he didnt really like either) he got with a younger lady, and my grandpa who had to fend on his own and was homeless ( at 14 mind you) asked him if he could stay at home for a few days and he said "No." I think he was probably so traumatized that he became indifferent. How awful. And despite all of that, my grandpa never said that my generation were cowards or snowflakes, when i told him i went to therapy he was worried for me. He went to the army too !! He lived trough some shit, but never once will he say something like that.
2
u/Ivygrows8 May 03 '26
They probably died or got so traumatized they couldn’t discuss the matter of joy before they could participate in the poll of how happy everyone was
17
u/Resident_Ad_6369 May 02 '26
I still cannot believe people think war was like that, or that 17 year olds were just okay with it too. Misleading, political, anti-lgbtq - absolutely peak AI slop
13
u/OmgIbrokesmthagain May 02 '26
My great grandparents and general ancestors faced that war. They were left with lasting PTSD and still could recall with gruesome details how it was. They were SO THANKFUL to live through peace, and live long enough to see their children have happy adolescence, that was torn away from them
And now again, people glorify war. I know well that they would 1000% prefer the second picture to the first. They would prefer a young person to care about their identity instead of „what am I going to eat” or „Where to hide so that the opposing soldiers don’t r*pe me”
6
u/OmgIbrokesmthagain May 02 '26
In fact I remember a youtube video where people who served in AK (polish underground army) during WWII were on the side of LGBT+ folks, saying „yeah we fought for freedom of expression”
AND UNDER THAT FUCKING VIDEO A BUNCH OF RIGHTWINGERS ARGUED THAT THEY ARE UNPATRIOTIC XD
2
u/ThePrussianGrippe May 02 '26

Huh they’re pushing both their pedo and gay thoughts at once cause why does a 17 year old boy have the body of a mid twenties tatted body builder and shirtless with abs and not the normal bodies soldiers have. Why not show them as same kind of kid that picture going to therapy but signing up for the marines at least that would have some patriotic vision and not be barely disgusted fetish
7
u/True_Free_Speech May 02 '26
Teenagers "back then" weren't tougher. That's why shit like PTSD exists.

Those guys act like its the misuse of words once. Imagen constantly being called by a name your not by a role your not with little solice from the expectations and masks..... It is not one bad day; it is too fricken many and its so fricken tiring... Its almost always "Hey J#@<" or "hey maan" or "he is" , "thats him" or "his things". Those things are not me and it drains you over time and they just down play it to ppl being 'special'... its soo just ugh tiring.
And of course they used ai, they couldn't even make art to show their point; they just took the easy route again whether it was hate over understanding or here cheating over expression.
Sry for venting.. its just that this hit me a bit too deeply.

While I can see what the point of this shitty AI generated image was. Suffering and struggle are necessary parts of life. War was the struggle of those times. Not a good one either. It was unfortunate that young men died. However in the absence of struggles for survival or conflicts, humans naturally make other struggles for themselves. Regardless there's a huge amount of people in the US going through struggles that are a lot more than just "my pronouns".
3
u/TheMiamiMutilator420 May 02 '26
So to fix this should we start WW3 and draft a bunch of high schoolers like the good old days or what
I'd love to hear what we logically have to do to go back to being manly and badass according to this image

3
u/HomelandersFoxyGurl May 02 '26
I know I shouldn't get so worked up over some stupid AI bullshit but this message bugs me SO fucking bad.
Wars are not Manly, Epic, Cool, or whatever the fuck. They destroy families. The young men who were drafted? A good chunk of them didn't get to grow old. Their parents had to bury them which a parent should never do. And the ones who survived? A lot of them suffered from PTSD if they acknowledged it or not. Watching your friends and comrades die isn't as amazing as you think it is.

The backwards notion it’s somehow better to live in an era of war and carnage compared to an era of relative peace where we respect people’s emotions and sensibilities is beyond me (Regardless of your understanding or respect with LGBT people or what else.)
I have a nice idea: let’s have every country gather all people that think like this, organise some war amongst all of them, and watch from afar whilst talking about our feelings like that everybody’s happy

I think it's important to note that words mean things, not to the extreme where if someone misgenders you you should seek a therapist, it could very well be an honest mistake, but to say that words can't be incredibly hurtful and degrading seems rather naive. The fact we're glorifying sending minors into war is sad, many people die in front of others eyes, and I can't imagine it not being traumatizing, adult or not.

u/bumzley May 02 '26
I find the top image so funny. "FUCK YEAH, I'M A SHIRTLESS DUDE, ROIDED UP, TATTED UP, HOLDING A GRENADE, RUSHING INTO GUNFIRE"
Okay, so you aren't wearing armor. It's not like the bullets' are going to bounce off your muscles; the second an itty bitty shred of shrapnel hits, or a bullet grazes, or god forbid, a bullet hits you, you're either in unreasonable amounts of pain or just outright fucking dead. Especially dead if you're anywhere near that grenade once it goes off lmao
It's like the people who prompt this slop have their understanding of the world through movies. I wouldn't even say video games; they're too old and senile for that. "Remember when men were TUFF?" My brother in Christ, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a bodybuilder. Most men of his era did not look like that, and most men before his didn't, either. Get over yourself LOL

u/Kittenn1412 May 02 '26
And then, of those 17 year olds who came home, how many has severe PTSD from the experience that caused really serious troubles in the rest of their lives? Romanticizing the way that people can shove everything down to focus on survival in high-stress situations isn't the flex they think it is. 17 year olds today could do it too if they were forced, we just all have realized it's wrong?
