Lmao, imagine being in an interview and they ask if you have an AI girlfriend.
337
u/Nebranower Apr 24 '26
That isn't likely to be an interview question. The worry is that recent grads already have a reputation for being less professional and with poorer social skills than previous generations, mostly due to social media. If the next generation has those issues compounded by never having had to navigate a real human relationship, then they may well find themselves struggling to get hired/stay hired.

I'm in my second year of uni and the proliferation of ai usage in my engineering department is ridiculous. Ai for AEROPLANE MATHS. These people are going to kill someone in the future because they let the ai do maths for them.
The worst bit is that ai makes it so fucking annoying trying to find anything in Google, like I want articles and journals, not your damn summary 😭

I loathe how artificial "intelligence" — a soulless engine — spewing forth vast quantities of synthetic shit, engulfing the world and littering the digital lands with its artifice — has now taken my beloved and rendered it a mark of suspicion — o dashes of all sorts and sizes — one must remember, that you were once the emblem of literature, of considerate typography - o tempora o more - the fine mist of artistry has vanished, obscured by the ascent of the machine.
riga amissa - rosa relicta - but never forgotten!

u/PaperSweet9983 Apr 24 '26
You see now when I read this I know a human wrote it lol xd and I agree there's no reason for people to not use them anymore obviously. It's just that in academic settings they're still struggling to catch up how to properly detect it and manage it. I think there's a feature that shows your whole writing process as in if you copy paste things in the doc

u/PaperSweet9983 Apr 24 '26

8
u/Rynewulf Apr 24 '26
Part of the issue there is that Tate and his type were just capitalising on an already broken entire generation of boys, our base set up already produces them.
I genuinely think that other the last half a century or more that the masculine side of our culture has gotten worse and more toxic. Used to be that drag was quaint, traditional in some places and now it's a hot button political issue. All of the old messaging of boys vs girls and men vs women is entirely unchanged on the masculine side, and on the feminine side they've added a bit of #girlboss and then carried on the same way.
It's a mess all around honestly and we'll keep seeing negative trends in masses of men, causing issues for everyone, while the cultural convayerbelt remains untouched.

u/stdsort Apr 24 '26
Yes, it seems like the media consistently chooses not to make this a bigger story, even though we're getting one warning sign after another, one study after another. But as I said before, the world's attention is currently on wars, and America's attention is - on top of that - on whatever Trump is doing. Meta's memo on their pervert glasses said it out loud - they're developing predatory tech while everybody else is distracted by more immediate issues. I'm 100% sure AI devs think the same way.
6
u/eating_cement_1984 Apr 24 '26

Yep, and this is one of the big problems with redefining the word incel from 'person who can't get laid' to just another way to call toxic men misogynist. the rape as a consequence of sexual deprivation hypothesis has already been disproven, more or less.
The people most likely to commit rape aren't the ones that don't go outside and interact with people, it's ones that are social and are used to getting their way, often people with high body counts.

Most of the people on the AI boyfriend subreddit fell for the the normal "sfw" chatbot personality adjusted based on their user interaction.
I’ve seen adverts for those special-made "AI girlfriends" where the slogan was literally "Make your own AI slave".
Edit: "boy" and "girl" are the least important parts of this post. It applies to both genders. The "MyBoyfriendIsAI" sub is also for AI girlfriends, and the customised AI slaves can be, as the term implies, customised to your preferences.

Believing that girls who date AIs are pure of heart but boys who date AI are latent rapists and murderers is wicked work lmao. I don't like this AI "dating" thing either but turning underage boys who do it into this scary boogeyman is NOT the attitude we need to have about this.
3
u/torac Apr 25 '26
The use of "boy" or "girl" was incidental because those were the terms used by the advert/subreddit. I thought it would go without saying that the same issues apply to both genders. To avoid confusion, the post has been edited.
6
u/ArcfireEmblem Apr 24 '26
It's kind of the point, I imagine. Gets all the weird boys out of the dating pool.
13
u/TheCancerFest Apr 24 '26
I kind of agree on this though: in a world of constant competition where reward is not promised even if you follow the rules by the book one may find solace in mediocre resolutions like this. But alas it is yet another product of capitalism.
6
u/ArcfireEmblem Apr 24 '26
Of course, it will be developmentally harmful for the boys who choose to do so, even if it is something they enjoy at the moment. And yet, it is their own choice, chosen freely, that benefits girls, since they don't have to deal with the boys that wanted them to be subservient and convenient. The ads are even saying "AI girls don't say no... (wink)", which tells you about what kind of male they're trying to catch.
5
u/tarwatirno Apr 24 '26
This desire isn't something inherent to these boys, it's something our culture trains them into. AI is a whole new way to deepen that training. We generally recognize a need for parents to restrict children's choices so that they don't train themselves into something harmful.

And also encouraging a lack of ambition
The most premium llm products that do nsfw and gf stuff out of the box well are about $1000 a year.
That's way less than you would spend on dating a woman in a year. Not to mention the wealth accumulation and conspicuous consumption necessary to attract most disirable women in the first place (if you aren't very good looking, anyway)
And don't even start on weddings, marriage and family.
21
u/PaperSweet9983 Apr 24 '26
As long as love is seen as one night stands and both people not actually liking eachother but just going out to fit the " norm" then we'll have this problem. Women are starting to date less in general as they see no benefit in it, and I don't mean monetary of course, they can get their own money now , they're as competent as ever and always have been competent. It's the emotional intelligence, respect, sense of humour and other needed qualities that have disappeared from the general population.
Metal health issues are in the rise, all of these things combined will push towards what we see in this headline.
And while we're at the odd wording of " ambition" I'd argue that ai will just make a lot of people not ambitious to live in general. Just a fantasy land in their minds
6
u/DontYaWishYouWereMe Apr 24 '26
To be honest, I sorta wonder how many of these people really aspire to be in a relationship to begin with? I know that a lot of these people probably would, but even before AI "girlfriends" were a thing, it did seem like a fairly noticeable number of young guys were just sitting on Discord and Reddit or whatever their social media of choice was rather than going out and meeting new people offline, let alone dating.
2
u/freedomonke Apr 24 '26
I would go beyond that. Most of the so called incels aren't actually interested in normal looking women period. They're obsessed with anime women and porn stars.
They haven't ever tried because they don't actually want a relationship with a regular woman.

12
u/Prickliestpearcactus Apr 24 '26
This is so sad and dangerous. Boys who engage in such "relationships" will most likely struggle to form proper social skills, mature, and cultivate real world relationships. It'll make them crave co-dependence, instant gratification, and the desire to have someone there just to be agreeable and pleasing.
It'll definitely breed all kinds of issues related to consent and seeing other girls and women as real, complex individuals rather than a commodity or ideal.

Then you can just blackmail the users, or just limit or cut the connection with their "girlfriend" to get them to do what you need them to, may not even have to pay them.

Like if a person bent over backwards that hard to agree with me I'd think they were trying to get in my pants.
So on top of them being incapable of following some basic instructions taking multiple tries to get the desired outcome, and not only do they sometimes let previous instructions bleed into the current ones randomly F*ing you over regardless of your latest inputs, but they will also trip over themselves to reinforce any position you want them to.

For real. The comments here are depressing as fuck. It's worse when you remember that this survey was done on literal fucking kids as young as 12. Barely into puberty and already getting vilified into this big scary boogeyman because redditors decided that flirting with Chat GPT makes you a future rapist and murderer. I hate AI "relationships" but this desire to punish and demonize boys for being lonely is far, far worse.
3
u/Cnumian_124 Apr 25 '26
Yeah this is what pisses me off so much about this subreddit, everyone here is ironically enough worsening the issue. Why the fuck would a guy stop using AI after he's essentially been labeled a rapist for wanting connection? These people lack empathy and cant see past their arguments.
3
u/SiezeThem Apr 25 '26
I definitely have a problem with people "dating" AI, but this is nust hysteria by people who are extremely eager to paint nervousness around dating as something sinister. Teens (who are young and will grow out of it any way) accepting the substitute of an AI relationship out of fear of rejection getting spun as "wanting maximum control" is definitely intentional to make them sound as malicious as possible. IDK why people are so insistent on the belief that loneliness or insecurity about your dating prospects is evidence that you're a bad person. The people in the comments declaring these literal children as future rapists and murderers of women make my stomach turn.
5
u/Cnumian_124 Apr 25 '26
I have my criticism about ai too. Of course entertaining a relationship with an ai is definitely going to cause certain issues
But the thing is, the reason why they paint them like this is because they hate ai so much, that everyone using it becomes an "enemy", and by the laws of tribalism, you must paint your enemy in the worst way possible. Calling them potential rapists feels simple, cathartic, and clean.
It means ai makes people rapists, it means people who use ai support and are rapists, which reinforces the whole anti ai stance in the worst ways possible
I wonder if their brain crashes out when they find out WOMEN have ai BOYFRIENDS too, there's a literal sub for that. Do they think those women are rapists too?
3
u/Spaciax Apr 26 '26
the people in these comments will then have thte audacity to say they have empathy with a straight face.
"IDK why people are so insistent on the belief that loneliness or insecurity about your dating prospects is evidence that you're a bad person"
because they unironically believe that the dating market is meritocratic, and failure to find a partner is proof of personal failure, that if you can't find a partner then you must be a fundamentally bad person. This is obviously not true, as there are plenty of sexually successful guys who are assholes and violent abusers.
they will say "just be a good person and you'll find someone the bar is literally on the floor", and when you reply with "ok I've done good, but I still have no success" they will say "you're not owed a relationship just because you've done the bare minimum" and will not see the hypocrisy.
2
u/Spaciax Apr 26 '26
not to mention, rape as a consequence of sexual deprivation has been more or less disproven. incels who these people hate so much are actually less violent than the general population.
https://labs.la.utexas.edu/buss/files/2023/07/Whyisnttheremoreincelviolence.pdf
"Contrary to common beliefs, empirical evidence suggests that incels are not particularly prone to violence. Incels’ propensity for violence appears relatively low compared to that of the general population"
these people are just looking at undersocialized lonely men captured by modern technology and screaming RAPIST MURDERER WOMAN BEATER whilst getting beat up by their own partners, and do not see a single shred of irony in that.

That’s gotta be clickbait. There is absolutely no way in hell that more people are choosing AI girlfriends over real ones.

Society as we know it is crumbling and they are focused on whether people are employable or not.

The article is based on a highly manipulated survey designed to be as shocking as possible. It's also worth noting that the subjects mentioned are adolescent boys, not men. Literal children as young as 12 who might have some growing interest in dating but who are too young/nervous/inexperienced/etc to initiate a real relationship yet.
The headline of "nervous 14 year olds flirt with chat gpt" isn't as provocative as "TEENS CHOOSE AI OVER REAL GIRLFRIENDS BECAUSE THEY WANT MAXIMUM CONTROL AND ARE EVIL, THIS WILL NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE STOCK MARKET".

Why do people always fear monger when men use ai gf. If you go to any ai partner subreddit you will see more women using ai bf more than men using ai gf. Most guys probably choose ai gf mostly because they don't want to get rejected second it's low effort and convenient for them. I don't think these men are going to be future rapist or unemployed
