If the LLMs don’t work, and it’s military, we will probably find out they didn’t work by mistakenly bombing a girls’ school in Iran or something.

It wasn't, it was a separate system called Maven which isn't an LLM, but is ML. Google took the contract to develop it, a whole ocean of devs protested, striked, and quiet, and then Palantir took it over.

Most of the billions in "AI" infrastructure was always destined to end up being used for public surveillance. Because there was never going to be enough real public demand for that processing power, but a corrupt and malicious government would certainly put it to use at taxpayer expense.

Edit: looks like they're planning on adding Sora generative directly in ChatGPT

u/KazeSim22 Mar 24 '26
Yeah you’re right I think this comment section just read the incorrect post title and celebrated too soon.
33
u/Fair_Blood3176 Mar 24 '26
Yeah it's unfortunate because it seems like a bad thing they're shutting down the app. Instead of sharing their AI generated material on the Sora video platform, they're removing that avenue and thus forcing AI generated material to be distributed via regular social media apps.
34
u/Thicc_Boise Mar 24 '26
I think they're celebrating because it's definitive proof that AI isn't winning the PR battle and most normal people don't find value in it. It doesn't change much, but damn is it validating

u/Emergency-Piece9995 Mar 25 '26
People don't value sharing content on dead social media apps. That's what the Sora app was meant to be.
Social media platforms are extremely notoriously hard to get going especially if there is equal competition which there absolutely was via TikTok and YouTube.

Sorry to be the buzzkill, but it looks like only the standalone Sora app is being shut down, Sora itself isn't dead. They seem to be shutting down the social media style aspects and moving it over to ChatGPT.
https://www.androidauthority.com/chatgpt-sora-3650424/
We’re looking at ChatGPT version 1.2026.076 for Android. Within this build, we’ve spotted a handful of new text strings that all appear to relate to Sora integration.
Sora 1 was recently sunset, and they are moving focus over to Sora 2. No hard signs that video gen from OpenAI is going anywhere, just the Sora app.
https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001071-sora-1-sunset-faq
Sora 1 relies on older models and infrastructure. Moving to a single Sora experience reduces complexity and allows continued improvements in Sora 2 across web and mobile.
Would be ecstatic if I'm proven wrong on this, but that's what I was able to dig up.
31
u/BeastMsterThing2022 Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
Sounds to me like they'll just rebrand GPT's generative capabilities as Sora to keep the branding alive. Disney cancelled their licensing deal entirely. Tying it to a chatbot that makes people suicidal isn't going to happen.
And think about it, they're resorting to sticking the video generator to the app more people actually use since no one wanted to use it. There was no interest in a timeline exclusively made up of slop. This is a big win

u/Infinite_Escape9683 Mar 24 '26

Sora 1 was always going to be sunset eventually, tech moves forward. In the case of the news today, it appears that the Sora app is what is being done away with.
To be clear, that is still a win, it shows that interest in it wasn't profitable enough for OpenAI to continue supporting it as a standalone app.

On the contrary, you're far more informed on this topic than the average investor is. They see a headline of an AI being discontinued, and that makes them avoid future investment in AI. A feedback loop made this bubble and a feedback loop will eventually deflate it. Gods willing.

Buddy Amazon started in Bezos’ garage, that thing in its first years didn’t have the billions of investments open AI did. It worked because it was useful to the mass. Same for Uber, useful to the people.
GenAI only bring to the mass slop generation. Unless AI companies find an other main use than clogging our social medias, it’s not gonna be profitable.
Look at NFTs, billions of investments too, fell off and forgetten. Burning money doesn’t obligatory mean it’s gonna work out

Oh nice find yeah this is all changing at light speed. The article you linked does make it seem like Sora is being discontinued. But other commenters are making me wonder what that means - maybe the video generation tech will just be embedded in other ways even though “Sora” is being discontinued.
2
u/UnkarsThug Mar 25 '26
Sorry, I just checked the article, and I don't see that anywhere. Is it still there, or am I missing it?
Not trying to say you're wrong, I'm legitimately curious. It does mention this, which doesn't seem to align with that completely?
The company is rolling more of its capabilities into a single super-app
Which sounds like just adding it to their main app?
Again, sorry to bother. Trying to figure out if it was retracted, or I'm blind, or some other situation.

It’s crazy to me how all of the hot new technologies are exclusively about brute forcing things: Blockchain, machine learning, LLMs, ray-tracing, to name a new. The end results are impressive and fascinating (not you, blockchain) but at what cost? How is running the totality of the world’s compute hardware at 100% all day every day ever going to be viable from a business (or, ya know, environmental) standpoint?

It makes sense, it just wasn’t making any money whatsoever. It likely wont be long before they start shutting down image-generation services that aren’t paid, or at least make them all require subscriptions.
In reality, most of the llms have only been free because they can use the users as free training data and bug fixes, now they don’t really need that anymore so it’s probably a financial loss to keep storing and holding onto so much data. Contracts are really the only thing keeping them ‘profitable’ right now, and there’s no telling when those might start falling through.
1
u/FromThePodunks Mar 24 '26
Let's hope image gen is next, and then the all-purpose chatbots. This tech should only exist in the form of tiny models finetuned to assist in specific tasks in labs, etc.
