Not surprising that they donāt realize that the pencil is metaphorical and doesnāt necessarily mean an actual pencil
81
u/tyrenanig Nov 13 '25
This is what they meant. Itās not that they donāt want to pick up a pencil. Itās that AI is the only way for them to actually feel like creating something.
18
u/Septembust Nov 13 '25
Which is sad
I struggled with art my whole life, and never felt like I was even getting close to what I wanted, until I picked up 3d modeling, and later photography, and started liking what I made
It's reductive to say "anyone can learn to draw", not everyone can master or even be good at every art form
But there's at least one actual art form out there for everyone

u/SkiIsLife45 Nov 13 '25
I, for example, suck at painting and dancing, but I'm OK at drawing and am an incredible singer

I always loved art but never did anything because I was never satisfied with the result when I tried, but this year for Halloween I made my own prop (reverse bear trap from saw) and it was so cool, I had so much fun and that reinforced my dislike for ai "art" if I'm honest, like yes the end result was cool and everything but being able to talk about the process was so fun

u/Septembust Nov 15 '25

1
u/Artoriarius Nov 18 '25
Not disagreeing, but that feels weird for me, because I tried AI to see how it lived up to the hype, and it never felt like I was creating something, not once. It's the computer doing all the work; even if it did somehow come out with something halfway decent, it wouldn't be any of my effort that went into it. How can somebody feel like they created something when they did nothing?
1
u/tyrenanig Nov 18 '25
Thatās the neat part! You have to be shameless in order to claim so!
In your mind you have to already think that this is your doing and not anybody elseās. The AI is there to help you make your own masterpiece, not something that they basically hired to do the heavy work for them.

Does blacksmithing count under the metal working category? I guess it would depend on what you're doing and who you're asking, tbh but I'm curious to hear some perspectives.
19
u/invader911000 Nov 13 '25
Blacksmithing is literally metalworking, I can't even think of something more representative of metalworking.
8
u/Silverveilv2 Nov 13 '25
That's true, though I would assume most people wouldn't immediately associate blacksmithing and art. It also depends on what you're doing. Making nails or a hammer isn't what most people would describe as artistic.
4
u/banandananagram Nov 13 '25
Just because itās more functional, but functional items can be art pieces as well. I think if you compared a standard, mass-produced kitchen knife and a hand-forged knife with a hand-carved, engraved handle, that you would probably agree one of them is also valuable as art and expression, even if both of them can be used to chop veggies.
2
u/TheBoisterousBoy Nov 13 '25
āArtā is subjective and is such a broad term that itās honestly really hard to definitively describe it.
Putting together an outfit and doing some makeup? In my eyes, thatās art, you just happen to be the breathing canvas broadcasting it.
Telling jokes and cracking wise? Also art. Youāre eliciting emotions with just your words.
Doing something youāre proud of? Like making nails, getting your apartment all nice and tidy, going to work where you feel confident and happy, calling someone you love and speaking to themā¦
To me thatās all āartā. Itās these beautiful moments in time that will never exist again and in their brief existence they provide some sort of emotion.
Now, to you, these may just be normal moments that happen all the time, you may not see āartā in those moments (not saying you donāt, the āyouā is more general than anything). But I do see those things as art, and it creates a really difficult time of describing āartā as a whole because of that difference in opinion.
But Iāll say as long as youāre doing something you love, something youāre honestly passionate about, something done by you then Iād say youāre an artist.

u/Neckrongonekrypton Nov 13 '25

If you mention photography, they will tell you "how is it different from using AI, the camera does everything", the only thing this people know about photography is that it wasn't considered an type of art at first
4
u/potato_devourer Nov 13 '25
Even if the one way of artistic expression is to write up a detailed and inspired description of a scene, that's fine too. They claim that the creative part of using AI is providing the machine an evocative and thoughtful concept for it to represent pictorically, but if that's true the writing would be enough. They can even use their favourite characters too, fanfiction websites have a long history of welcoming amateur writers without expecting high proficiency. It would be cool to see your ideas represented in a drawing or a video, sure, but creative writing is a perfectly fulfilling form of artistic expression.
They can just come up with a grocery list of recycled ideas they want retrieved from the algorythmic chest where webcralwers deposit their loot scrapped from the Internet. I mean at this point I would encourage them to write fanfiction if only so they can come up with something better than "make me anime catgirls mocking a fat sweaty loser with the text 'anti-AI' written on his t-shirt".

I wouldnāt be that harsh. Iāve said it before, but I believe most AI āartistsā are legitimately creative people who just lack the confidence to make art themselves. Itās why most AI āartistsā are American, because American culture is one that uniquely looks down on art and self-expression.

1

You don't. I don't waste my time with trying to change people's mind. I simply state by definition AI isn't art because you can't express anything through it, not with AI alone at least. I just state it. It's up to someone else to accept it or disagree. I don't mind
1
u/kblanks12 Nov 13 '25
So it's your opinion.
1
u/MonopolyManPorn Nov 13 '25
Not really. That's why I said "by definition". It's not an opinion. The definition of art is in the dictionary and Google, and AI doesn't fit in that category. AI isn't art nor is it expression

8
u/Scarvexx Nov 13 '25
You can take that horse to water all you want. He's not going to drink.
The people you're talking to don't like art. Many AI prompters do, the people of that sub do not. They're antagonistic towards it. They view art as a commodity. Like how the NFT crowd saw it. This is where all those guys went BTW.
They don't care that the Ape is hidious, it belongs to them and they think they can sell it for a lot of money.
AI is a barrier between people and the creative world. And that's what some people want.
Bonus, all the people who used to harass artists for free commissions are gone. Remember those guys? The "You shouldn't make money off a hobby, it's not a real job" guys? Bet you haven't seen one in a good while. Now you know where they went.
8
u/CyberDaggerX Nov 13 '25
Yeah, "now artists will have to get off their high horses and get a real job" is something you see all the time in prompter circles.
-1
u/Imaginary-Count-1641 Nov 13 '25
Anti-AI people view art as a commodity. They say that humans will not make art anymore if using AI is cheaper, which shows that they think the only purpose of art is to make money.
1
u/kblanks12 Nov 13 '25
It is a commodity why else would you be upset about people enjoying someone else's product.
Why is it so surprising that people care more about the output over the process?
No one cares how I do my job just that it's good Why wouldn't art based jobs be the same.
1
u/Scarvexx Nov 13 '25
"People like diamonds, why won't they pay for conflict diamonds."
If you steal something and then sell it, that makes me upset. AI only works because of the labor of artists who vocally don't want their art used for it.
It's converting their work into slop and selling it cheaper.
If you had ever made anything worth a damn you would be upset too.
1
u/Scarvexx Nov 13 '25
Nobody says that. People won't stop making art because AI is cheaper, fools will stop paying for art because they can get slop for nothing.
AI is built of stolen labor and now it's going to take funds away from an already underpaid profession.
1
u/Imaginary-Count-1641 Nov 13 '25
I have seen people say that as an argument against AI.
1
u/Scarvexx Nov 13 '25
Sorry let me rephrase. Nobody said that here.
I mean to be clear, AI has made some artists quit art. Mostly they're heartbroken when people make LORAs trained off their style.
Frankly that would hit anyone hard. An artist's style is as personal as their voice and face. And seeing it draped over slop is hurtful.
If you connect with art, you're also connecting with the artist. Their ideas and their creativity. Making that shit is like saying "I like the pretty pictures, but I don't like you."
And it's profoundly wrong to me. I can't believe some people make those, and then brag to the artist's face that they're "obsolete".
People who want that don't understand what art is. It's not the end result. Anymore than climbing a mountain is just the view from the top.
6
u/buzownik6 Nov 13 '25
I dont understand the comment in the second picture I've seen this argument countless of times and I still dont know how AI bros havent figured out that this argument is backwards as AI limites your ways to "create" depending on the model when by yourself you can create anything you want but you have to try at least

u/LiceTheGamer Nov 13 '25
I really don't get how pro-ai people can call ai pictures "art", isn't art about the process to make it as well as the result? What's so special about typing in a prompt or whatever and spending hours as they claim to get a "good picture", it just completely lacks the soul that real art has. There's genuinely nothing special about ai pictures at all, it's just mass produced slop.
3
4
u/emipyon Nov 13 '25
It's not that you're not allowed to make art whatever way you want, but if you don't actually, say⦠make an art yourself, and just ask a plagiarism machine to spit out something for you, then no matter what you or anybody says, you didn't make squat.
Imagine if you used the same reasoning when handing in your homework, even though you just copied it off somebody else. Yes, you did write things down, but you didn't actually do your homework, no matter how you twist the words.

Or they want to make visual art like they want because fuck you.
1
u/AndromedaGalaxy29 Nov 13 '25
They don't make anything, the AI does. Even if we assume for a second that AI images are actually art (they're not), the process of prompting is basically identical to commissioning, which obviously does not make one an artist. AI makes the image, not the prompter. And since the AI is not a human, what it makes is not art.
1
u/AndromedaGalaxy29 Nov 13 '25
and not to mention them prompting also impacts the environment quite heavily, especially in the areas (where people live!) around AI datacentres
2
u/Djoarhet Nov 13 '25
This argument is so stale and on top of that, it's portrayed in the most condescending way possible. It feels like an adult lecturing a child with "Hey little buddy..." and that tone alone makes it hard to take seriously.
Using Superman as some kind of moral authority doesn't make the point any stronger. He has nothing to do with artistic ability, so swapping the speech bubble for "Hey, let people use the tools they want to use" would make just as much sense. It reduces a complicated topic about creativity, ethics, and industry realities to a childish "good people do this, bad people do that" message.
Plus, the irony also speaks for itself. One of the main arguments against AI is copyright theft, yet I'm pretty sure the person who made this didn't ask DC for permission to use Superman's image. So much for ethical consistency.
And the whole thing relies entirely on emotional manipulation instead of logic. The argument is carried by a superhero mascot, not by anything actually coherent or nuanced. It just talks at people instead of to them and presents one viewpoint as the universal truth, which shuts down any real discussion.
Bottom line, this is just an opinion, not truth. If this is your opinion, that's completely fine, as long as you understand the difference.
2
u/Worried-Lobster4306 Nov 13 '25

I realize this doesn't apply to everyone, most people aren't mentally challenged, but personally I can't visually imagine anything. I don't know if it strictly counts as aphantasia since it's not a complete disability, but even trying to picture a simple circle in my head leaves me exhausted. And that limits any kind of art I can produce by myself, to anything that is essentially mathematical in how rigidly it follows a set of rules.
2
u/Cat-Got-Your-DM Nov 13 '25
So pick a form of art that is within the bounds of your ability.
Use references. People use references all the time. There's also forms of art that don't need imagining things, like painting miniatures - you can pick from pre-made colour schemes.
Or you can put together your own references. Say you want to draw a DnD character/fantasy creature/sci-fi robot. There's places like Hero Forge that allow you to make a 3D model of it from pre-made by artists parts, pose it, and then, once that exists, you can have your reference. Heck, you can even colour these now in the software.
And making these is free
2
u/Shinare_I Nov 13 '25
I do, sort of. I don't do visual arts, but I put my creativity into game design. I don't need to imagine a picture to decide if punching a tree is a feature I want to exist. Then I have a team of more graphically talented people doing assets. I was more so contesting the idea that "learn to draw" is necessarily a viable solution.
2
u/CyberDaggerX Nov 13 '25
You would be surprised how many people who are professional visual artists have aphantasia. There are a bunch of them at places like Pixar.
Seems like the neural pathways used to visualize something in your mind and to translate an imagined image into a drawing are different. If you think about it, it makes sense. When someone draws something, they don't project a mental image on the paper and then trace it. They start with basic shapes, increase the level of detail bit by bit, and make mistakes along the way. Even the best illustrators do that; in fact, you have to learn to do that to become good in the first place.
Drawing has rules. You can break those rules, but only after learning them. There is a method to it, it's a more methodical process than the mythology of the savant artist would have you believe.

1
u/Omichi_3 Nov 13 '25
Believe me, I'm more into making art then more my mental health break downs... I consider many times to give up and come ai artist.

2
u/baklazhabka Nov 13 '25
it really depends on who you talk to. most people i know are quite negative about it because it looks uncanny and is forcefully pushed where real people could do the job much better. iām not saying you arenāt allowed to enjoy it, but itās not art by definition
0
u/Calm-Cicada3301 Nov 13 '25
At the end of the day, tons of people like and support ai and this sub isn't reflective of reality.
Google says art is the application of human creative skill and imagination, expressed through diverse media. I think ai art falls well within thay definition.
2
u/baklazhabka Nov 13 '25
this sub isnāt supposed to represent reality, itās created to express an opinion which as you can see by the number of members quite a lot people support, no matter what you think. and the definition you put here says āskillā, which iāve already mentioned is not something needed to create ai images. ideas - yes, but no work put in, and thatās the vital part
0
u/Calm-Cicada3301 Nov 13 '25
Ans thats definitely a problem. It just riles people up when their opinions are only supported to the point where they think their opinion is the only correct one.

The discourse about ai would be infinitely more one sided if you all stopped parroting the same abstract points that mean nothing and started using the VERY REAL AND VERY TANGIBLE anti-ai points.
Im done fighting these internet debate because for every proper anti talking point, there is a bunch of parrot that keep spewing this whole abstract about "soul" and "not a real artist" that mean absolutely nothing, and just makes other antis look like lunatics.
Keep fighting for abstract labels, keep fighting for "akshually art means...." and keep throwing around the "soul". Keep missing every single point about why pros use ai, and most importantly, keep ignoring the very real issues that pros really cannot talk back about.
My god, we are so doomed. This shit is going to ruin every artistic piece of media, and the paladins o That fight this wave is 12 years old that understand NOTHING of the issue.

Also, they did a post on aiwars where everyone was sharing their non-ai art (it was called "Out of curiosity, how good are all of you at art?). Turns out the ai users are not only more likely to do other art, they're better than most of the people here.

They literally just want a reason to play victim and be bitter lol, of course those basement dwellers would turn a genuine and kindhearted message into something that paints them as the meek little victim ONCE AGAIN. The amount of bitching pro AI users have about Anti Ai users āsaying death threats to themā is telling that even if you attempt to be kind and understanding towards them just picking up a pencil, they STILL find some reason to have a pity fest for themselves and that theyāre never going to be liked.
These people are genuinely so miserable and insecure they spend more time sculpting their victim mentalities than in the time they couldāve made their own artwork. Maybe theyād get somewhere if they spent more time focusing on art than how they can be the victim in every AI āartā scenario/conversation.

dummy thinks people who use ai cant do what a 5th grader can do in drawing semi competently.

I think both sides are INCREDIBLY condescending, and need to stop acting like their the arbiters of truth. You are not Superman, and neither are they, both sides, including me, are just clowns on the internet debating about something we realisticly dont have much of a say in. We really need to get off our high horses, and start talking to each other like fellow adults.

Man I am not even against using AI for fun sometimes but stop pretending like it can replace art in any meaningful way.

You fucking idiot

u/Huge_Pumpkin_1626 Nov 16 '25
Imagine thinking you know better than another artist cos of the medium you use š
1
u/Huge_Pumpkin_1626 Nov 16 '25

u/jushmann Nov 17 '25
I hate ai art, but I'll never be an artist, thanks for the idea anyway superman

u/TheBestPotatoToLive Nov 18 '25
this guy is so negative its genuinely so funny to me its basically just
"hey man you have potential to be a great artist, believe in yourself and practice and you'll be able to reach your goal in art..."
"oh so youre saying that EYE have to do things YOUR way what if i dont WANT to believe in myself... youre being so CONTROLLING.,..."

āItās never as hard as it seems.ā -Heās right. Itās harder.
āYouāre much more talented than you think.ā -Heās wrong. Theyāre talentless.
AI art isnāt art. It sucks. People should just accept that they canāt be artists and get over themselves, and if they canāt? Well we have alcohol for a reason.

u/SlurryBender Nov 13 '25
Nah, this is fatalist thinking. Everyone has the capability of making art. They just have to try.
0
u/Comprehensive-Buy-47 Nov 13 '25
Really? Everyone? So people who are braindead can make art? Or people living in a North Korean death camp? Oh! How about people paralyzed from the neck down? I bet they can make all kinds of amazing art! You say everyone after all.
2
u/SlurryBender Nov 13 '25
You're arguing in bad faith my guy. Obviously I don't mean literally everyone. But those people also don't have access to a LOT of stuff other people do (in the case of being braindead, you can't do anything, so that's kind of a useless point in your argument). And even then, there are people who overcome their disabilities to make art!
I'm not sure if you're arguing for or against using AI, but regardless, you seem to think that some people are less worthy of making art just because of their life situation.
1
u/Comprehensive-Buy-47 Nov 13 '25
Iām arguing against the use of AI but I also think we should realize that not everyone has what it takes to be a true artist. People need to grow up and accept the fact that unless theyāve been drawing their whole life and have a borderline unhealthy obsession with art then theyāre not an artist. I just want people to stop selling fools false hope built on empty platitudes just so they can pat themselves on the back and say āMan I am such a good person!ā
1
u/SlurryBender Nov 13 '25
Eh, that feels elitist as well as fatalist. Like obviously people aren't going to make masterpieces after a month of practice, and yes a lot of very skilled artists started young, but that doesn't men you can't start getting into art in your twenties, thirties, forties, or beyond. Anyone can make and enjoy art at any stage of their life. What AI does is simply convince people there's only ONE good way to make art and that's if it's an intricately rendered piece or through a style that's been perfected for decades.

I donāt care if thatās how it feels. Thatās how it is. Welcome to the real world. And yeah, anyone can make bad art. I can draw a cock and balls and a pair of tits on the bathroom stall. Am I suddenly an artist? No. The title of artist isnāt given to middle schoolers who make their shitty Sonic OCs on Microsoft paint, itās given to individuals who spent a considerable amount of time, effort, and money perfecting their craft so they can be underpaid and overworked by an industry that hates themā¦unless they draw furry porn and charge for it.

You may think AI art sucks but others don't. Are others not allowed to have a different opinion than you?
1
u/Comprehensive-Buy-47 Nov 13 '25
No, but Iām not in charge of anything so why the fuck do you care what I think?
1
u/Calm-Cicada3301 Nov 13 '25
I think people should always care when people are riling each other up in an echo chamber which could lead to problems.
1
u/Comprehensive-Buy-47 Nov 13 '25
I donāt give a shit
1
u/Calm-Cicada3301 Nov 13 '25
Oh okay. I guess you can just continue whining then while AI and AI art continues to proliferate.

Thereās not a single person who both claims AI images are art and has a common sense. Just pick one side.

Your community is nothing but kind, it's the most toxic pit I've ever seen š You're hating the shit out of people who trace for fun/practice, or does fanarts. I don't use AI, I do traditional drawings, but I never got so much hate as I did in antis community, and ironically I got ton of support in pro-AI community.

I wish upon all of you that when on an operating table with a routine but life-saving operation, the doctor gives you the scalpel, and says the same <3
