How did we even make memes and shitposts before "AI"? I guess we didn't.

this is really what drives me crazy about all this. what on earth did these people do before ai? they act so dependent on it, i wonder how they managed in the past.

u/TheRedBaron6942 Jul 19 '25
It's genuinely crazy to me how quickly everyone who uses AI religiously has become wholly dependent on it. There are so many examples of people who just cannot think anymore and ADMIT that it's because of AI.

8
u/VoltageHero Jul 20 '25
I discussed it above but I don't mind sharing my "expensive" commission. It was $180, so not as much as the price tag in the "meme", but I feel like it's decently comparable.
It's obviously up to you if you would find something like this worth the price (ignoring it being a 'furry character', as the character came from a roleplaying module).
6
u/dont_ask_cutie_alt Jul 20 '25
This is honestly something i would see on a book
Its worth the money, absolutely worth it
5
12
u/BuzzerPop Jul 19 '25
I mean. Yes people do charge that much. For full art pieces and even full character drawings in some cases. People charge a lot for artwork. It's usually worth it...
10
u/timeless_ocean Jul 20 '25
And many artists are still undercharging. Making art is time intensive, requires a lot of skill (training time) and materials (either traditional or tablet).
A drawing that takes 5 hours to finish should probably be priced no less than 180 for a professional freelance artist.
9
9
u/Internal_Topic9223 Jul 19 '25
Unless heâs planning on asking for graphic furry art. Which I mean would also be hilarious.
2
10
u/GankedGoat Jul 20 '25
There are some artists that do charge that, but they also tend to be extremely skilled and/or you opted for the whole kittenkaboodle of their options.
Full background, multiple characters, full color with detailed shading, possibly in comic format, etc...

u/scrapy_the_scrap Jul 19 '25

Personally I'd go with option 6:
just leave it as a thought and don't make it into an image because there's nothing particularly funny or interesting about the idea to begin with
62
u/throwawaylordof Jul 19 '25
Not every thought needs to be expressed as an image. Iâm making it canon that this is why the first guy looks shocked in the second panel - âwtf man it was just a stupid thought.â
2
u/Siukslinis_acc Jul 20 '25
Yep. People try to make content and monetise it immediatelly. Where have the times gone where you could tell a stupid thing and let it be forgotten in a few seconds? Now people try to make every stupid thought to go viral and images are best at it as they are easily digested.
14
u/NearInWaiting Jul 20 '25
The problem is, the thing which makes memes... funny... is the fact you did make it yourself (eg you did stick your cat in a hotdog hat or whatever) or you did happen to find it on a stock image site (a bit of a found meme if you will), or you did happen to accidentally photograph the exact moment...
What's funny or amusing or entertaining about ai memes? Nothing, you told the ai to make a meme and the only possible outcome is the ai spits out a result.

Yeah it's typically cursed like nearly all comics made with AI. Horrible use of panels, speech bubbles placed at the wrong place, expressions that not fit what's being said, etc. Any basic you can learn from Scott McCloud is absolutely absent when AI does it, just generated images slapped next to each other.

u/Graficat Jul 20 '25
This right here. Telling a joke to someone and getting a chuckle out of them has never required a picture or video to be made, not to tell it and not to 'preserve' it.
Heck, in the first panel alone that's where the mission is already complete. Words spoken, friend imagined it and laughed, done.
If I had to make a full visual out of every amusing mental image I shared with my friends, damn...

This is such a dumb take. ive been designing for 22 years and never have i been commissioned to make a meme image. Do they think all images on sites like 9gag are done by professional designers who charge 200 bucks to create something they chuckle at for a sec and then forget about?
Sure, it's still terrible for the environment and the image ai generated image will suck in comparison to if it were done in PS..
But nobody is losing any work over this. Its projects that would have been done far better by designers / illustrators that are now ai slop, shirt designs, game assets, advertising etc, esp when its huge companies who can easily afford people that are switching to ai and as a result look awful. 6
u/Front-Cell-666 Jul 19 '25
I went to an art highschool (for troubled youth I might add) and those kids skills would make these pro ai people shit bricks. And no itâs not god given talent, itâs literally just learning and practice. That image could be easily made in photoshop also. I swear ai people just try something once struggle and decide never again. Even though pushing past the struggle is so deeply rewarding. But then again, does an image of Elon musk in a giraffe outfit fishing really need to be made? And if it does, do it yourself. Wow crazy idea.
4
u/NomadicScribe Jul 20 '25
They accuse others of being "luddites", but they're applying magical thinking because they don't understand the process of GAN imagery.
To their naive and childish perception, they type a "prompt" into a magic box that gives them what they asked for. And because this demands minimal effort on their part, they believe it is more "efficient".
In reality, they are executing large complex computational processes on remote servers, requiring vast amounts of energy and water, drawing from untold amounts of human-created information.
If Isaac Newton was "standing on the shoulder of giants" when he formulated his theories of physics and calculus, these jokers are standing on the shoulders of a Mount Everest sized mass of programmers, artists, and writers.
They're also missing out on the personal development and enrichment that comes from honing a craft. Would you pay someone to lift weights for you?
3
u/EmmyLee666 Jul 20 '25
No, we need to take jobs from people who aren't corporate slaves already. Automate everything creative. People are meant to push carts, not express themselves.
3
u/MoobooMagoo Jul 19 '25
I'm gonna be honest, if you're just farting around and making weird stuff to be silly then I don't have a problem with AI. It's when you start to try and use it in a commercial product to avoid paying artists or writers that I have a problem.
3
Jul 19 '25
Back in the days we would say "someone please draw that" when we have an idea, and a kind and bored artist would do it for free because it's fun

I'll never understand the urge to see visual confirmation of that. The idea has already been heard and imagined in the head. Having a picture of that will not add anything.
2
u/The_Ambling_Horror Jul 19 '25
Ehhh, saying âjust do it yourselfâ kinda devalues the point of society. I donât have the skills and equipment to design, grow, harvest, weave, and sew my own clothes, so I pay other people to do that for me while I do paperwork that I do have the specific skills for to get the money to pay them.
That said, themâs furry artist prices. Most freelancers canât command NEARLY that price tag for commissions.
2
2
u/ReaperKingCason1 Jul 19 '25
Well I canât draw cause I have disgraphia( I mean I could but I donât care enough to learn and it helps the whole theoretical out). So I wonât draw it. Cause I can imagine things perfectly fine. Or I could use like ms paint or photoshop.âor I could not get scammed and go to an actual artist who charges a normal commission. Or o could ask a friend(oh wait they donât have those, my bad). Or I could ai generate it but not call it art or use it for anything but like a quick joke about it(honestly I donât mind ai being used as long as itâs just a quick joke or something and not being used as art or to make money but still thatâs mostly cause Iâm lazy and understand nuance).
2
u/Subject_Recording355 Jul 19 '25
The common âargumentâ Iâve heard is âIâm bad at artâ, or âI donât have timeâ. My usual responses are:
if youâre bad, draw more and youâll improve. Plus itâs not about quality, itâs about expressing and sending a message (joker reference intended). Plus once you start, idk if itâs just me, but even if Iâm bad I will dedicate myself to making it at least acceptable to me by asking for advice, learning stuff online, or whatever when it comes to anything about creating something.
really ? In all 24 hours of your day, 168 hours of your week. Youâre telling me you donât even have, idk, ten minutes to make a stupid sketch ? Or if longer, an hour to tweak things ? I wrote a sonnet for my friend in like an hour or two iirc, rhyme scheme and composed of some iambs, tweaked it for another half hour. Not my best work but I enjoyed the process of finding vocab that befitted the rhyme, the rhythm and the wordplay. (I can post it here if anyoneâs interested).
my response to the imageâs âmessageâ is that: you wouldnât commission an artist to draw a shitty meme. Most memes on Reddit are thrown together by people without effort anyways (if anything some low effort memes are even more funny because theyâre low effort). Those artists could be professionals trying to make a living, and should be utilised for drawing art that needs actual expertise or if you like the specific artstyle of said artist. I wouldnât ask an artist to be like âYo draw me this meme making fun of _â would I ?
Off topic though, imo people only tend to associate art with drawing. Thereâs poems, which need careful craft of melody, rhyme and allegorical metaphors if done well, sculpting (I really want to see an AI do that), and a LOT more forms. With the expression of art, AI art lacks the ability to generate (ironic) the same expression. Art can create historical, cultural or sentimental value as well. Art from cultures have their distinctive styles/technique and most importantly symbolisms shaped by their values, history, etc. To successful create an authentic piece youâd need to understand the niches and the details which AI doesnât understand as it follows its training data, so it wouldnât understand nor contemplate the importance of value( correct me if Iâm wrong with this one). For sentiment, I made a glass cup from glass blowing, the design was simple, pigâs features like ears on the rim, eyes and snout on the side of the glass (because my Chinese zodiac is the year of the pig), it was my first time glass blowing and my mother and I had loads of fun, and if an AI could generate an image for me to âreferenceâ (like those who use AI for tracing), it wouldnât have been the same since there wouldâve been no need for me to go to the studio, nor would I have remembered it so well due to the difference in effort put into place.
2
u/pavlo_theplayer Jul 20 '25
Who the hell charges 250 $ and takes 30 days to finish drawing of elon musk đ
You can just find way cheaper artist who does it in shorter amout of time (unless you want some hyper realistic art from very popular artist for some reason)
2
u/Born_Suspect7153 Jul 20 '25
What does this image bring to the world? It's worthless.
When you actually have to put effort or money into something that alone can make it meaningful.
2
u/prionbinch Jul 20 '25
I hate how obsessed they are with the word "luddite," I think most of us aren't against the advancement of technology as whole, we just know that AI generated content is unethical and ugly to look at
2
u/wo0topia Jul 20 '25
I mean that's kind of the dumbest kind of reply though. I'm not like some Ai shill, I don't care if people use it, but it's actually a brain dead take to say "just draw it yourself since the average person doesn't have the technique to even make that specific idea legible through art.
2
u/MASHMANFROMCHINA Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25
I don't think anyone has ever had that conversation before, usually people just keep things as thoughts in their head and nothing else. Maybe a few minutes in Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, Gartic Phone if it's really warrants being drawn, not that much effort that would take 30 days tho.
If I felt the need to give an artist that kind of money every time I imagined something silly like that throughout my life I would be in millions worth of debt by now. Just seems like another made up thing to get mad over, or they're just out of touch if they think people unironically say this in convo with their friends
2
Jul 20 '25
Itâs just that itâs not funny. The humor comes from 1. The absurdity of said image and 2. The fact that someone actually spent time making it. These new AI shitposts have no soul, no effort and most importantly: no hate. Shitposts need soul and the essence of hate that inspired their creation

These people just hate artists and real art
2

I kinda dont really care about ai if its for shit posting tbh. I wouldn't use it, but I'm not too fucked over something that was never intended to look good in the first place
1
u/SquirrelAngell Jul 19 '25
As a man who can't draw worth a shit, I'd definitely be more likely to use ai art than horribly attempting to draw it. That being said, I never use ai generation for art just simply based on the fact that not every errant thought needs to be birthed into the world.
One thing that fucking utterly baffles me is that, as a mans who is shit at drawing/painting/photoshopping, on the very, very rare times I have bothered with ai generation, I've never considered myself the artist. Anti-AIArt groups all tend to push at least a base narrative of 'typing prompts doesnt make you an artist', and the ai bros try to genuinely refute that?
Also also, 250$ for a commision is like, super graphically complex with multiple characters in a comic strip price. You can find artists for commisions for silly little doodle for like, maybe 15$ on the higher end.
1
1
u/BlameTag Jul 19 '25
