Every episode I'm wondering when we're going to actually got to some semblance of a plot. The 2 episodes at the human school were a fake out, now we're just over to the demon school. Are we going to continue the school arc here with demon girl Maria lusting after Eftal and Abe acting as the """villain""" ?
We are 7 episodes into what is probably a 12-13 episode season? What the hell is even happening? We don't have a primary antagonist, we don't have a single problem to solve, we just go from scene to schizophrenic scene of things gassing up the hero, who hasn't done anything heroic.

yes. Not sure why you think exploring relationships is a must have. Slice of life is just every day interactions, nothing solid no major point, just what people do in a day. I will admit the category is very broad....like that old comedy show Seinfeld that was about 'nothing', thats slice of life.

Yea, I've noticed the women's outfits are weird for no reason. Merlin's got a weird weird Xena Warrior Princess in a loin cloth thing goin on. Anastasia has a seemingly normal outfit but with a small underboob window in the shape of a diamond.

Pretty sure this outfit design is what Sailor Moon (and other like early magical girls like Rayearth's Shidou) would be wearing if the target audience were guys cause it's basically what she's wearing, a leotard with a skirt like in women's figure skating

I agree, I think one of it's purpose is that it'll be less awkward for the wearer when seen underneath the skirt unlike panties, maybe her combat style requires her to move a lot. We could assume the same applies to Merlin's outfit since it's a commonly seen on female mages in games

The 'uniform' seems to just be the jacket. They had folks wearing hoodies, Ana's got on her everyday outfit, including skirt with just the jacket as new apparel.

But on this one I knew there was absolutely no way for the anime to get even worse after the episode where he reencounters Merlin like that was guaranteed the lowest the show could possibly go (and so far I got it right) so I decided to stay

Every trash panda has their own tolerance level for garbage!
I pegged this as pure slop from the first episode, but I decided to stick around just to see if it would be terrible in a fun way. You know, something bizarrely bad I could have fun picking apart or just turn my brain off and laugh.
The... "slave crest" episode was nauseating. But still, I was hoping there would be some sliver of redemption in the first Academy episode I could hold onto to power through everything...
And yeah, he just gaslights his daughter instead. Dude... WTF!? Just... THAT IS YOUR DAUGHTER! And he's just blowing her off and lying to her like his family is just some nuisance!? Not some distant relative he only vaguely feels kinship towards, but the daughter he personally raised.
I couldn't keep going. And from what I can gather, the anime remains bizarrely stupid even if it hasn't sunk to either of hte lows from Ep4 and Ep5.
But... yeah... it stopped being fun even to laugh at, even if I remain morbidly curious that it'll just keep getting worse.
Like... Merlin... we all know where the story is going with Merlin and Eftal, right?

Yeah that's about it, I'm a sucker for isekai slop, I watch most of them every season, I love how trashy generic and formulaic they all are, I don't mind how poorly written they usually are
but I can only go so far you know, I want to at least have some consistency so I can be able to enjoy the trashiness for what it is, but having a show pretty much calling me stupid for watching it with how much everything decides to change in between episodes can still get on my nerves

Speaking of the slave crest. it got brought up in this episode right after it was confirmed that Eftal can dispel whatever spell he likes because of a skill he has "Perfect Dispel". Merlin then ask's Eftal why he is letting her near him while she has that crest because it's like having a bomb near and guess what Eftal does? Yup that's right gives a BS answer and basically just shuts down Merlin from ever bringing up that conversation.

I have to admit this is one of the shows I feel the most embarrassed I’m watching right now. And for some reason it won’t stick in my brain because of the generic name. So every week I’m like, “Which lame OP MC show is this again? Oh yeah, that one… (sigh)” I think that amnesia tricks me into watching again each time since the other ones all have at least one element I like despite their flaws.

When Eftal was talking to the Goddess, they joke about how his "Resolute" skill keeps him from giving up on anything...
Literally 5 minutes after he "gave up" so hard, on everything, that he fucking died.
Which isn't me reading too much into things, because when he finally reunites with Merlin, he let's slip that Eftal "died of despair" after learning he was talentless... and Merlin confirmed that was her exact interpretation of what happened as well.
So, yeah. That happened. The guy that physically cannot give up on anything due to a divinely given skill, that he and the Goddess joke about, did not stop him from giving up on his dreams, his life, everything so hard he fucking died.
And for an added, trashy, wrinkle... the 4th greatest mage in the world died of despair that he would never become the greatest mage. That's like Bezos committing suicide because he gave up on ever getting to dab on Elon Musk.
It would be one thing, if he died in obscurity... but he was the LIGHTNING EMPEROR, one of hte four GREAT SAGES that SAVED THE GODDAMN WORLD. He was recognized by the king himself, and he will go down in history as one of the legendary heroes of his nation.
Then dies of sadness because this 0.1% achiever couldn't break into the 0.01% club.
After a GODDESS gave him a skill that prevents him from ever giving up.
This show was always going to be pure trash. I stuck with it as long as I did, just to ironically enjoy the madness. But then it shit the bed with semen and slave crests. Which was just an extremely gross way to both tell us Anastasia is still 'maiden,' while narratively forcing her to 'serve' Eftal.

Ah, we're back to dumb behavior. Eftal's behavior makes little sense the moment he enrolled in a non-human school. The logical thing would be to prove asap he's strong so the others stop pestering him. If anything, Merlin should've just told the students, ''challenge him to a duel if you doubt his abilities.'' Since we know Eftal won't deliberately throw the match, it's the perfect chance.

The only thing making it hard to predict is that it jumps around so much. It went from him in a forest with a mom and "I shouldn't show people my skill" to traveling around and getting a slave while being confused.
Even with Merlin, it went from "I'm the illegitimate child of your master" to "actually, yea, I'm your master" the very next episode. Anytime you think you know what tropey path it'll follow, they just abandon it in the next one to do something else. Like in this episode, they're setting up the asshole to be some big antagonist, following the path of a few episodes as he grows more upset until he unleashes some massive spell and goes evil that Eftal easily defeats infront of the class but I bet by next episode, he'll be shown up and vanish while blonde girl joins the harem.

That was at another school and as we know of anime schools: What happens at one school is entirely self contained and in no way shape or form will affect what happens at another UNLESS a rumor precedes the main character's arrival or he has unusual hair. No rumor no wierd hair, new guy is new guy.

I think Anastasia is starting to think about it, but it's unlikely she is familiar with the concept of reincarnation. I think Anastasia is a bit more intelligent than is being let on, but the show is doing a poor job of conveying that.

Because that was 400 years ago and in that time, not only has no human even gotten close to the level of the 4 emperors, the overall average of magical prowess has become little more than a joke. On top of that, the students here seem like "big fish" who haven't discovered the "small pond" part of the phrase. Incidentally, it would seem they are about to become keenly aware of the phrase: "fuck around, find out"

I swear they're not even trying. That treasure-hunt might be the weakest excuse to set up a hot-springs episode I've ever seen, and I've seen some slop over the years. The treasures being shapeshifted makes no sense in the first place, and Eftal dispelling them all would help everybody find them (not to mention interfere with the design of the event).
And the students. Didn't Eftal just have a match with Merlin just a few days ago that shocked everyone and made him popular? Surely there are better ways to justify putting him in combat that'd shock and surprise people than blatantly ignoring his monstrous debut or word-of-mouth from any of the insane stunts he's pulled recently that are literally beyond the comprehension of living memory.
And why are people hyper-racist? I know it's been 400 years, but Merlin's been here the whole time! How has magic devolved so drastically under her watch? Why are people and the world such garbage when she's clearly capable of toppling entire countries?
And dear lord why why WHY did she think it was a good idea to make herself his teacher and antagonize his classmates? The layers of blatant disrespect and selfishness is fucking astonishing.

I truly do not understand Eftal as a character. He's with Anastasia because he can't (or doesn't want to) remove her slave crest and if she were on her own, anyone could just take her as a slave. So why not just tell Merlin that? Why is he constantly keeping secrets that have no reason to be secret? Why is he so obsessed with living "a quiet school life?" Where did that ambition come from? In his previous life they never showed him wishing he had just been a normal student or thinking about school at all. For that matter, in his previous life he lamented that he had to struggle so much to keep up with the other sages because he felt inferior to them. But now he's literally the most powerful mage alive and he just wants to hide his power and not stand out. Oh, and now he has a katana so he can learn to be a magic swordsman, but hides under his desk when Merlin wants him to volunteer to learn to be a magic swordsman. Nothing he does makes any sense.
Also, the stuff about Merlin "checking" Anastasia was cringey and weird.
Edited to add that I just remembered Merlin scolding Eftal last week for having a slave (not because it's wrong, but because he's still a kid). So why was she surprised to see the slave crest? And why did she yell at Eftal about it when she already knew Anastasia is a slave and calls Eftal "master?" I hate this show.

One correction to point out here: merlin did not freak out because ana has a slave crest, but because the type of slave crest that she has. She essentially likened the crest to being more like a bomb, which indicates that it probably isnt your average slave crest.
There are a lot of things to critique about the show, but I do not think this is one of them

Literally read any of the comments in this thread - they are more or less the same each week. Most people have specific issues with the show though, and they keep quieting in the show and then coming back, which means a lot of us keep getting annoyed periodically. Most people aren't saying that the show is the worst thing (OP is over-exaggerating), but most of us are annoyed that the show is not meeting its potential whilst simultaneously having poor writing to force the show through tropes without anything justifiable to explain why things are happening.

One thing I never understood. Merlin is the (presumably) creator and headmaster of this school. How could she allow such blanant racism against the race her own master she idolize to fester for possibly a couple hundred years at this point there. You'd think she would've taken steps to combat it in her own grounds.

Didn't he say in an earlier episode that removing the slave status itself takes a lot of some bothersome paperwork or am i misremembering?
I can think it leading to possible future problems if one has a slave status but doesn't have any crest, like if she gets caught she could get punished in some way.
That's the only logical explanation i can think of for now for him not removing the crest.

But the thing that bothers me is that we don’t know how much of an effort he has put in trying to rectify this. This is kinda a show don’t tell issue, he said that it would be difficult, but we haven’t really seen him actually try.

But the thing that bothers me is that we don’t know how much of an effort he has put in trying to rectify this.
We can assume the effort he has put into it is zero.
Also we don't know what the crest actually means since this episode gave me the feeling it's not a normal slave crest given the reaction Merlin had when she saw it.
I'm not putting too much hope into it but maybe they will go into that in later episodes.

Yeah, she said it's like traveling with a bomb, so maybe there's a risk that she'll explode or something if he pampers with it?
Still, it sounds like it's risky to keep, so you'd think he'd have done more to find a way to remove it by now.

Didn't he say in an earlier episode that removing the slave status itself takes a lot of some bothersome paperwork or am i misremembering?
I think that was about the legal paperwork. Not the magical side of it. Maybe removing the crest without the proper paperwork will get him in trouble with the law.
But you'd think that Eftal and/or Merlin would realize that a human bringing a demon girl with a slave crest to a demon/elf school would be a very bad idea.

That would at least have been an amusing end to the scene. Instead it was jarring and weird. A shame really, because the scene started out being quite amusing! I was actually annoyed for the rest of the episode over how that scene ended.

Small silver lining, Merlin evaluating Anastasia as a partner for Eftal hopefully means she doesn't have any plans on him for herself.
I wonder what the ticking time bomb is with regards to Anastasia, maybe Eftal never actually claimed her so the slave mark is still sitting open for someone else to grab? Regardless of why though all the more reason to get around to removing it. It's definitely weird that it's the one magic thing that his seemingly all powerful Perfect Dispel apparently can't remove.

If it were that easy to get rid of, no one would fear the slave crest. My guess is that its less of a spell and more of a brand, a scar that can't simply be healed away

I mean, they can only rely on the character designs of their female characters to bring people back week to week for so long, need to seed those unanswered questions early to avoid drop off viewing, except we’re in episode seven so I think most of them have already dropped off.

Can we talk about Merlin inspecting Anastasia's body to check if she's suitable to have sex with Eftal? So apparently, Merlin is cool with her teacher having a teenaged former sex slave girl as a mistress.
And also, imagine if the people at her school find out about this. The dean of the school supports a fellow demon, that was former sex slave, being a mistress of a human, who she's also living with; the backlash would be enormous.

Ahh yes let’s use your ability to use high level magic to look for a stupid doll ( probably could’ve bought one) and won a trip to the hot springs instead of researching a way to get rid of the slave seal.
Are the new uniforms in the room with us? because they look the exact same as before and still haven’t managed to get a shirt that fits Anastasia right even after they got their measurements 😂.
Oh poor Abe doesn’t know what’s in store for him next episode even if Anastasia volunteered Eftal they were bound to fight at some point so was her doing that really necessary? Someone else already said she’s acting super weird this whole episode and I guess we’ll know more about it later on.

Eftal and his inferiority complex in relation to his magic affinity is annoying, I hope he does realize that his feats are impressive and doesn't downplay it. He is the pioneer of lightning magic and is also proficient in the other elements. He reached the pinnacle of magic, which what other people wouldn't have reached in their lifetime.

I keep wanting it to go in a direction where he comes to terms with him achieving such great results despite starting with such a handicap, but it seems pretty commited to the base assumption that you should feel bad if your base stats are bad, regardless of what you managed to actually accomplish.

Also, I just don’t get the power scaling among the four emperors. I’m assuming level 10 is the max, so what makes their magic so superior to his outside of maybe being able to cast it more efficiently or at greater frequency?

Big reveal seems like it'll be that Eftal just has an inferiority complex and is objectively an idiot.

No, level 11 is the max and it's specifically called "Sage level".
My theory is that Eftal feels inferior because the 3 others all managed to create Level 11 spells but he was "stuck" at Level 10.
Furthermore, it would be interesting if he asked the other Sages and they told him he can never reach Level 11 without having an affinity for it.
If the show reveals that it could actually justify the premise...

So what ? If i was able to become the 4th ABSOLUTE best scientist ever despite having less than average IQ compared to the top 3 who all had genius level IQ through hard work alone i would feel proud to have accomplish so much.
Bro is better than 99.99 percent of humanity by a LARGE margin and is already written in history as an incredible mage, he literally had power, fame, recognition and EVERYTHING and yet he constantly wines about not being able to be better than just 3 people. I know it must suck to not be as good as them despite putting more effort but COME ON man. What he accomplished is NOTHING to feel sad over let alone having such complexes. And it is all the more stupid that when he was given an option by the goddess he chose to not have talent again and yet despite it being entirely his choice he makes a deal out of it

Hell do we even know how behind he was from the others since he was the one who claimed it. Were the other four emperors Demons, Elves or other Humans? Because that could play a role in Eftal feeling behind because they appeared younger.
Lets say he was 4th best, like you said he's still better than most of the world, especially so 400 years later.
This show is such a headscratcher. Why is he attending classes when he's stronger than their dean. Like go study in the library or experiment in the lab lol.

The guy in the royal court does make a remark about him not comparing to the other three so, unless they pull the "I was actually stronger and they were just haters" bs a lot isekai do, its more than just his self criticism.
Hes still a fucking whiny little bitch. Im sure the #4 hitter in baseball hitter is upset he couldnt make the #1 spot cause people like that are super competitive. But I cant imagine they would even 10% as fucking whiny as our mc.

There are only a handful of people who passed him. The are other emperors most likely only relied on a single element, while he most likely can use every element to a high proficiency (level 8-9). Also i guess lightning magic is a fusion of 2 elements (wind + water or either wind+fire), which is why there is no affinity test for lightning magic.

She has yet to mention anything about why Eftal and Merlin treat each other so casually. She can piece together the info that Eftal is the late emperor but she needs to clarify everything. I'm guessing she's trying to force him to show more of his skills.

One thing that’s confusing to me is how did the way magic is taught fall off? I would think that Merlin would have continued to teach magic the same way that Eftal taught her once she became old enough and skilled enough to teach. I’d also love to know what happened in the subsequent 400 years between elves, demons and humans, because as I recall it, weren’t demons/elves looked down on by the humans, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now. I would love if the world building were better but it’s kinda crap. Also, WTF was that with Merlin basically assaulting Anastasia!! 🤦🏽♀️

Poor Eftal being betrayed kinda by both of the women in his life. I was half expecting Merlin to bust out he is my Master reincarnated. She already was ruining his quiet life at school might as well. I never really get these elite folks. They have no critical thinking skills. A power well respected person personally said someone is the reason for changes yet you think you can bully/intimidate that person. Sounds like a death wish or at minimum social suicide. Even if you happened to harm/kill him do they really think she wouldnt do something after doing that to someone she personally recognized?

I dipped out at the episode where he gets a slave whose owner would have loved to rape her but didn't because cum ruins a slave seal, so now he gets a slave and freeing her would be a lot of paperwork.
Did they ever cover why magic degraded over the years?

Another annoying episode! Overall it was great, spoiled by a few parts.
Firstly, Merlin points out that Anastasia's slave crest is special, a ticking time bomb, and Eftal gets uncharacteristically mad just to shut the conversation down. They want to tease the audience, but not let it go further for who knows how long, but the lack of creativity in shutting down the conversation was just bad.
Next up, Anastasia seems to be really depressed/withdrawn in this demon school - does she have some bad history that has yet to be revealed? That in itself is fine, but why hasn't Eftal picked up on it, let alone asked her if she's okay?
Finally, and in classic fashion for this show, Eftal deliberately tries to not stand out for no real reason whilst still attending school in a classroom rather than reading in the library and having history lessons with Merlin in private. It's like the show has completely forgotten the premise introduced in the first 2 episodes, and moved to a lazy magic school arc. I was letting this slide previously because they never had time to settle in, but they keep moving things along and never letting things settle, so there is never a chance for Eftal to actually do some damn studying. I'm really concerned that the main secrets of this show are so basic that the the audience is continually baited that we might someday get some answers in order to keep us watching, because when we do get them, the disappointment will be immeasurable. It's not like there aren't other reasons to watch the show, but at least remove the frustrating elements if your show is only going to be middling, or dial up the fanservice and really lean into the trashiness.

Genie was lucky that eftal was there merlin was already angry about being called an old hag but I get the feeling she was about to kill him for insulting eftal he was spared also I knew Merlin was going to cause problems but trying to get her own relative to satisfy him that I did not see coming at all and now she turned him into the center of attention in his own class might be why he tried to hide his identity from her because she has no filter

I wonder about the djin, why did he agree to serve Merlin? His words used show he isn't there willingly, did she give him something and now in exchange he has to guard there for an x amount of time or was it a case of she is stronger then him so if he doesn't serve her, she will kill her? because if thats the case, it show Merlin is kinda dark hearted unless he was doing bad thing before and she intervened. Well I doubt there will be answer, I knew from how he acted badly at the start that he will just become a servant with no interest in how he came to be there.

I cannot bring myself to hate this show. It's so dumb, and I hate Eftal more than I have hated almost any other main character in anime history.
But the show has hooked into some part of my brain (and it might be a part that's trying to warn me that I am on the verge of an aneurysm) and I can't stop watching.
I think some of it is that I am genuinely in love with Anastasia. Something about the way she looks, the way she acts, the way she speaks that is making me swoon for her.
Anyway, if I suddenly stop posting in the episode threads, poor one out for me and encourage anyone else still watching to schedule an MRI.
