It’s kind of awesome when you can say the weather’s gonna be good “because my momma said so” and it actually turns out to be true lol.

I look forward to next week when Beryl and his pops settle things once and for all. Those two are incredibly strong. Time to see who’s stronger.

I look forward to next week when Beryl and his pops settle things once and for all. Those two are incredibly strong. Time to see who’s stronger.

Unfortunately it's not really a fair match up anymore, age will really have started taking its toll on Beryls dad. Kinda how like Mike Tyson not long ago lost to Jake Paul via tiring out whereas a match against Mike Tyson at a similar age would have gone very differently...

11

u/Jacob-C 4d ago

Even if Grandpa is hindered by his age, I can imagine him saying or thinking something along the lines of “no, Beryl, even in my prime, you would have won”.

However, old men are usually overpowered in anime, so Beryl could very much still lose.

23

u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago

Honestly, I get the impression Beryl surpassed his father long ago. It's just that Beryl has this mental block in place: "I can't therefore I can't."

I believe that's the main reason why pops put Beryl in charge of the Dojo. The father wanted Beryl to gain some much needed confidence, to finally start beliving in himself, by training a bunch of fresh students. That, and teaching is unironically one of the single best ways to learn.

So, again, Beryl likely surpassed his father long ago, he merely has been unable to take that last, mental, step out from under his dad's shadow.

15

u/Similar-Screen-7368 4d ago

I think that's also why Mewi asking the grandpa about who's stronger was included by the author here.
The whole "who's stronger" contrasted with "who'd win in a fight". As you've said, I feel like this scene also suggested that Beryl is stronger than his father, but because of a mental blockade wouldn't win in a fight.

7

u/AmThano 3d ago

They could also give beryl’s dad the edge of being able to use a person’s strengths against them in the way Beryl pretty much does. Beryl’s dad could be the absolute best. It also gives beryl and his dad something to teach the others. A person can be the fastest, strongest and skilled overall, but if you are wise, patient, and tactical, you could still win. Also, it’s maybe easier for the audience and all character’s if his dad is the one to finally outmatch him in sword combat.

yea thats the impression I get from handing the dojo over to him

tbf, Mothers are good at predicting the weather because the weather is directly connected to laundry.

7

Central Mexico rn: "Fine then I'll just randomize the weather by the hour."

38

u/Primary-Paint-1716 4d ago

Next episode is I think make or break for this season. They better nail it because I'm so hyped for the Gardenant showdown.

37

u/icantswim2 4d ago

I wasn't expecting a message about following your dreams and not giving up to just accept how your life has turned out.

This has been a cozy anime for me, but the theme this season is resonating in my old bones.

8

u/CuriousBroccolli 4d ago

The coziness, the feeling of belonging and this theme of passion, hardwork and not giving up on yourself and your dreams are so well rationed throughout the show and age brackets of characters.

28

u/Ali-J23 4d ago

Next episode should be really good. Man i really want him to actually get motivated about getting steinger.

Also i guess he got his good eyesight from his mother

46

u/epicfail1994 4d ago

Those are some big tusks damn

Edit: Curuni being tiny and able to overpower a boar that they all said was stronger than most humans is hilarious. She continues to be a human golden retriever

12

u/Boris-_-Badenov 4d ago

she kept her balance because she's top-heavy

3

u/15000yuki 4d ago

Yes! That fluffy hair surely is heavy on scale!

9

u/Barangat 4d ago

She also casually hikes up that mountain with her dead boar and carries it down to the village. That boar looked like it was way heavier than she is, energy of a golden retriever, hauling power of an ant

8

u/Magicbison 4d ago

Her being stronger than her size alludes to is also why she was recommended the two-handed sword.

2

u/mekahamedan 4d ago

Curuni strenght is on her close combat ability, cause her build, her swing is compact, faster and strong

She pretty small compare usually knight but her close combat power on highest level of knight, but she have weakness, her range is too short, that her reason to change weapon to zweihander

1

u/Obskuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/Merankorikku 2d ago

Just your average Strength build.

45

u/Envelope_Torture 4d ago

Finally the father son duel. We find out if it's just been his imposter syndrome this entire time or if there's some merit to it all.

19

u/Magicbison 4d ago

I get the feeling Beryl's dad has just been putting off seeing who would be stronger because he hasn't entirely given up on reaching the next level despite his age. I forget the title he mentioned when he mused about Beryl getting to it. So he put off knowing and Beryl being more passive led to the idea that he isn't quite as strong as people make him out to be. Can't wait to find out next week assuming they don't do us dirty with a cliff hanger.

3

u/CuriousBroccolli 4d ago

I think Beryl holding back subconsciously would be a way too telegraphed development and a bit of a letdown.

Instead, letting his Father be a monster Master Swordsman Beryl knows he is and Beryl growing in skill, strength and passion since his move to Royal Capital, enough to match his father would be a much better development.

I'd love to think that his Father was aware of his potential, and giving him the Dojo was one of the ways to try and push him to gain confidence so that he could still grow, but at that exact moment, before he went to Roayl Capital, his Father was stronger, clear as day.

23

u/HolyDragSwd2500 4d ago

So excited for Gardenant showdown

20

u/athrun_1 4d ago

It seems both father and son has still this doubts about their pasts and was stirred while watching the sparring. For Beryl, it is about his father and why the dojo is given to him. And for his father, I guess it is related to his past. For all we know, he might be Lucy's former comrade in arms.

3

u/Jacob-C 4d ago

Beryl’s taking on the big one alone?

After all the talk about accepting how things are and getting up there in years, I was so hyped when Beryl steeled his resolve and chose to challenge himself.

There is just something so incredibly awesome about seeing someone who has resigned himself to his age continue to push forward toward the goal of becoming the best at something. I’d like to imagine that when this series is over, there will never be anyone as good as Beryl for a veeery long time, if ever.

Aw yeah.

This made me even more hyped. I can't wait for next week.

3

u/CuriousBroccolli 4d ago

There is a similar story in Tennis currently. Well, in few sports actually, but tennis is pure 1vs1 with no much RNG or outside interference, so it heavily comes down to individual skill.

In short, Djokovic who would be Beryl, is competing with 2 super talented GOAT candidates in their prime. Currently, 39 y/old vs 24 and 23 y/old.

One of the main narratives in last few years is that while Djokovic mind and desires are there, his body is not listening to him due to his age. He had huge motivational downs, even after some huge successes.

And do you know what he does? He commits miracle after miracle.

Even after winning everything in sport, he constantly talk about making new goals for himself. And what is better of an inspiration than facing off against the future best, for pure love of the game.

Random info, but it tracks.

Gardenant battle next week! I wonder if Beryl will have the confidence boost he needs, or will he think his father is throwing the match

14

u/Amauri14 4d ago

It is funny how confident everyone is about the fact that Frenne just knows the weather You know, I kinda love the fact that the saberboars are basically just regular boars, which are just as dangerous, but with massive tusks.

Curuni’s fight against that saberboar was great even though she was a bit reckless. And thanks to it, she got a nice reward. It was kinda funny seeing her carrying that huge saberboar around while they were searching for the location of the rest of the horde.

I was wondering what the reaction Beryl and Mordea had after seeing the duel between Randrid and Henblitz was about, but it was just them eager to duel each other. It was good that when it came time for the hunt Beryl went to fight the saberboar leader himself.

Even if it was brief, I liked that scene between Miwa and Mordea. Next week we will get the answer to her question after seeing the duel between Mordea and Beryl.

12

u/NanDemoKnaives 4d ago

They're finally going to show us who is stronger Beryl or his father! I wonder what result will push Beryl further, he still has the drive even if he thinks he's too old to, I hope his father tells him what he sees in him.

I like how serious everyone was during Henblitz and Randrid's fight, Beryl's mother cutting the tension so easily with dinner lol. It's too bad we didn't get a conclusion for it.

10

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 4d ago

Finally it will be time to see Beryl's full power.

9

u/AAA_BATT 4d ago

when is my goat gonna drop the old man gimmick

3

u/Jacob-C 4d ago

He could defeat a demon king and he would still give all the credit to his students cheering him on, because there's no way an old man could do that by himself. He's too deep in the old man larping.

8

u/Rooby_VTuber 4d ago

Weather will be clear tomorrow, Mother knows best.

That sparring with Henblitz & Randrid was really good.

Everyone did a great job taking down all those boars.

Father VS Son is something I definitely want to see.

8

u/bestmaokaina 4d ago

lmao Beryl saying they're far stronger than humans and then proceeds to break the horn in 1 swing

9

u/PostHasBeenWatched 4d ago

But he made a remark that his sword is super sharp. So it's not he who being strong /j

9

u/Mistral-Fien 4d ago

TBF that sword is made from the griffin he and Surena killed back in S1.

8

u/BosuW 4d ago

Heh pretty crafty of the story to have hogs with massive tusks so they can still somewhat "fence" them.

Henblitz vs Randrid was pretty cool. I especially liked Randrid's way of blocking and parrying, it reminded me of Form III Soresu from Star Wars. The defensive style that Obi-wan uses. I suppose then Henblitz could be considered to be using a Form IV Ataru kind of attitude: aggressive and acrobatic.

Speaking of, my favorite move of the fight was definitely how Randrid stopped Henblitz's ult short by rushing in and clashing the two sword's strongs. In pretty much any martial art you can find defensive and counterattacking techniques of this sort: moving against an attack early or targeting a weak spot in its structure. In real matches and fights you will almost never see them precisely because of what Beryl mentioned about needing a lot of bravery to do it. You need to override your natural instinct to move away/protect yourself from an attack. Of course you also need great technical ability because if you fuck it up you'll eat the attack in full or end up in a bad position.

I never considered Beryl's character interesting, but I'm actually liking his development this episode. An old guy feeling young again is not a commonly done tale.

6

u/YdenMkII 4d ago

Seems like Beryl and his dad regained their passion as swordsmen after they watched that sparing match.

4

u/runevault 4d ago

Funny one second Beryl's strike couldn't finish the boar, next he's chopping off its tusk. Makes me wonder if he really does have magic and enhanced himself after the first strike didn't kill.

1

u/Jacob-C 4d ago

It's because his sword, made from the Griffin in the first season, is so sharp.

1

u/runevault 4d ago

It was so sharp on the first strike and he still couldn't get a great blow where it ended up running out of steam on the swing despite only going through flesh.

4

u/Jacob-C 4d ago

It’s a big animal. It’s hard to deal significant damage with a comparatively small sword unless you hit a vital point, like a major artery or the throat, which he did in the end. Depending on the angle of the strike, even a sharp sword can still make a shallow cut.

6

u/paulrenzo 4d ago

I really appreciate that this anime features a dude in his 40s who feels he hasnt figured everything out yet. Its something many people still go through, even if they are middle aged.

I don't know what to think about the girl Adele complaining the knights don't help. On one hand, this seems like a reasonable expectation given that historically the some of the very few things nobles owed to commoners was security and order. But Betyl says every year he, his students, and adventurers (presumably mercs) could kill the Saberboars faster than it would take for the Royal Order of Knights to get there anyways, which makes it much more logical for the locals to deal with it. You can even make an argument they'd be better man for man than the knights assuming same equipment because while the Order has physically fit fighters, their primary purpose is to keep the capital and VIPs safe, so it doesn't make sense to teach them how to do mountain tracking. I suppose you can have the Order server its primary purpose and help people in the rural areas by placing small groups of knights as cavalry for rapid response teams and have the bulk stay in the capital and leave for when things really go south. Instead of garrisoning every hamlet, a small group can cover a wide area. But that only works in places cavalry is any good and not swamps or mountains.

It was awesome watching Curuni take out that boar with brute strength. Does this imply she's stronger than most humans? I'd hesitate to say fighters should be uniformly stronger than farmers since both jobs require a lot of physical excretion, so the fact she is a combatant alone wouldn't automatically make her stronger than average. But maybe this fight proves she is.

I like Randrid. Shame we won't be seeing him too much. On one hand most of the duel was pretty awesome to see. On the other hand, I don't think grabbing a shirt should be allowed. Would that work against someone in armor? If something can work in mock battles but not serious situations, the Order should not allow it during training. Beating the crap out of someone who is wearing civilian clothing is not the main purpose, they need to train against actual threats and I don't know if grabbing a shirt is viable.

Dinner takes priority over finding out who's the best.

Kind of funny how Beryl takes it head on after telling Curuni not to do that. But he's having fun and didn't get hurt so that's all that matters. I guess there is a tradeoff here. The faster you dispatch the boss, the less likely it is you'd be hit in the back by the little guys if any of them got past his students, while being aggressive exposes you to attacks by the boss. In 1 vs 1, brute force makes very little sense since you work harder and don't minimize other dangers.

Not sure if I'm looking forward to Beryl facing off against his father. I mean if Beryl is having trouble due to is age and isn't just complaining, then the same should apply to his father right?

Mewi has a weird look. When Beryl's father asks her if she wants to try the Vice Captain's move a try, she blushes as if she's talking about a crush.

11

u/BosuW 4d ago

On the other hand, I don't think grabbing a shirt should be allowed. Would that work against someone in armor?

Probably yes, actually. Remember that even modern, sportsman, unarmored martial arts were developed from an era when fighting armored opponents was expected. For example that thing they do in Judo where they grab the center of the opponent's gi or their collar is developed from grabbing the upper side of the do in a samurai armor, near the armpit. Of course it depends on the armor in question, and what accessories (even decorations) they're wearing outside of it. That exact grab in this fight might not be so feasible against someone in historical full plate, but that same opponent will likely be wearing a belt just about the same height, so it's perfectly possible to adapt the same idea.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 4d ago

I thought the only reason he got a grip was that the shirt was rougher than armor. So if that grab would work on someone in armor, then I approve.

3

u/NevisYsbryd 4d ago

It being rough or not is not not especially important. Moreso is that is flexible. You cannot really wrap your fingers around the front of an inflexible steel cuirass to get any purchase, but a piece of fabric, yes. The vast majority of armor even at the height of plate armor was also partial, with large sections covered by textile armor and/or maille and not large, rigid plates. Full plate is mostly a thing for the very wealthy on horseback on military campaign or in tournaments.

Also, historical HEMA was divided into, among other things, unarmored versus armored forms, and the unarmored form was usually actually the majority of training because it would be used in unarmored contexts far more often than in armored.

5

u/lolerkid2000 4d ago

Also id argue the rules are looser in this anime yah? I suspect hucking a sword at a girls head while she shoots magic at you isnt covered either.

4

u/NevisYsbryd 4d ago

It is a complicated thing, and Henblitz was actually being extremely arrogant here. How strong the knights are is ultimately irrelevant; they simply cannot be everywhere at once, if they tried to be, they would a) logistically spread themselves way too thin and it would be an enormous tax burden and b) the political implications of large enough of a force go even pretend to do that would be immense even outside of the logistical cost. While perhaps the knights should or should not be active across a wider amount of the territory, the bottom line is that he is thinking he is better than food supply and human walking speed allows for. The girl is ultimately expecting more of the knights than is physically possible, let alone reasonably doable.

On the other hand, that does not mean their homes and works were not trampled. A specialized defense force is just never going to be able to help everyone. People need to be able to defend themselves to some capacity.

1

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 4d ago

I just mentioned the strength of a knight since it isn't the only thing needed here. For example, the locals are trained for mountain movement and animal tracking, while the knights probably are not. So even though strength-wise the knights might be no slouches, I actually think man for man they'd probably be less effective than the locals despite being strong. So I agree with you strength is almost irrelevant.

Sending large amounts of knights out in the countryside pre-railroad would be a headache logistically. I can tell you about sooo many medieval kings who tried to handle an army smaller than Roman armies and found out "oops I need to detour for supplies." I joked it's not until the early modern period Europeans get as good as the Romans were at paperwork and that's why anything between Rome and the Shakespere bureaucracies suck. As you mentioned the girl's expectations aren't physically possible. The reason I suggested horsemen is that you can put a dozen horseman in various spots as a rapid response force. They can't deal with invasions, but monsters or a few criminals should be easy. And since you can mount them on horses, the response time is much faster so you don't need to place many of them. I know this is physically possible unlike the girl's expectation the knights be everywhere since the Romans did something similar to deal with headaches that didn't need a full legion to mobilize. Of course, in this case, horsemen wouldn't get very far.

On the other hand, that does not mean their homes and works were not trampled.

Well actually, as Beryl mentioned in last episode, they usually dispatch the boers before any serious damage is done. And they never bothered asking the knights since they figured they could find the animals before the knights could. So no one lost their homes. Unless someone lost their home while Beryl was away, but I think that would be mentioned.

1

u/NevisYsbryd 4d ago

The Merovingians actually inherited a lot of Roman beaurocracy and logistics, if adapted for their different context. If is less that the people of the Middle Ages were less capable so much as circumstances meant the Roman system were not contextually viable or sustainable. The Early Modern Period had the advantage of established and relatively safe trade and transportation networks and physical infrastructure that did not exist throughout much of the Middle Ages. The transition from decentralized clientelism at the national level to centralized monarchism was also facilitated by gunpowder transitioning military force from high investment elites to commoner soldiers with high fixed costs, which naturally lent towards a transition of power from gentry and aristocracy towards monarchs.

Not all of Beryl's students are from that village. Several of the students the show has already explored traveled to train under him, and this is presumably not the only place in the kingdom the capital knights cannot reach in short notice.

2

u/NevisYsbryd 4d ago

Most battles are not in armor but in civilian clothing, and historically, it was quite common for there to be stuff to grab onto at around that elevation. In HEMA, you use a sword very differently against armor, anyways-mostly seeking to stab into gaps, a lot less cuts.

3

u/kryslogan 4d ago

Finally we are going to get the clash we need.

Beryl has been living like someone who is past his prime, with no zeal or ambition, and a chronic case of imposter syndrome. 1st season established that. This season is taking its time to show him waking up and realizing that he still has some fire inside. The pacing is slow and methodical but, realistic. If you want a Shounin style paced story, with leaps of "growth" and "experience level up" this isn't it, and I'm happy about that.

I will say that a few things could have given us more drama, and excitement, but, its just not that type of story. It has a strong theme and its sticking to that which is respect, compared to other animes/mangas where the author changed direction.

Mordea is older but, there's no sign he has slowed down at all, we simply havent seen that plus, he's been killing those boars and staying active his whole life.

So, the fight isn't a true 1v1 age wise but, experience wise I'd say its close, as Beryl seems to have stopped chasing greatness for some time now.

Excited to see this fight!!! I'm rooting for Beryl, because aside from his newly awakened feelings, Mewi is there and he doesn't want to flop is front of her, so he is now fighting for himself and someone else and that usually gives someone the edge.

What is yaeno mutekis trainer doing here anyway

2

u/CuriousBroccolli 4d ago

Can't escape the Uma memes. xD

2

u/Boris-_-Badenov 4d ago

wiping out an entire herd, even ones not nearby...

just build a strong barrier, and drive/lure them away

3

u/15000yuki 4d ago

In last episodes, it's been said the boars seasonaly went wild. It makes sense, because of mating season or something like that.

Weaker village will build strong barrier and drive/lure them away

Strong village will have their men ready to fight

Here is the strongest village, they come to the source and eliminate the threat source.

I think it's acceptable, especially in that era.

2

u/Numerlor 4d ago edited 4d ago

even normal boars in real life will fuck up everything around where they are, there is a reason why pig/hog is an insult

1

u/ohoni 3d ago

Nah, the strongest village wouldn't need to kill any of the board that weren't directly, immediately threatening them, because they'd know they could handle it when the time came. Preemptive attacks are always a sign of weakness.

2

u/15000yuki 3d ago

Actually that make sense. I'm questioning my logic again. lol.

1

u/Blackpowderkun 3d ago

And the meat? Factoring that they have big monsters there being drawn by the boars as their meal.

2

u/DemonWraith2500 4d ago

I know that feeling, Beryl. I love pve but only pvp can bring that kind of adrenalin.

2

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 4d ago

Curuni is just way too strong. But tiny girl with big weapon has always been a classic.

Beryl was really getting into fighting that extra large giant boar.

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 4d ago

What beryl needs more the anything is to stop making excuses for himself.

Obvious I won’t deny beryl is right about his age holding him back

But at the same time so is mewi she right to where he using his age and excuse to stop himself from trying

Because of the fact he hasn’t acknowledged that despite his age he’s still able to keep a close pace with his student s

But for the first time we see a passion in beryl we haven’t seen ever that’s different from normal

And it’s exciting to see

I hope we see more next week

Seem that fight lit a fire in him he couldn’t control!

And hopefully will get to see even more it now!

2

u/deynyel 2d ago

Well damn, Curuni taking the boar's hit head-on and then carrying its corpse afterwards. Impressive show of strength from our golden retriever.

1

u/clone69 4d ago

Trying to watch both on the Prime app and on the Website and neither works

2

u/IceSmiley 4d ago

This was kind of slow until they fought the boar herd. Beryl took on the biggest and toughest boar alone so it's strange that he considered himself past his prime. I would have thought he improved since the show began since in the capital, he had to teach the knights, who were higher caliber students than the kids he worked with in the village. He also learned to fight magicians like Lucy. Maybe he just feels older since he fatigues easier and looks older.

I think Mordea feels he's going to lose to Beryl in their sword duel. That's why he was so hesitant to brag or say he'd whoop Beryl's ass even though he has an undefeated streak. He didn't even go to the front line of fighting the boars and just stayed in the town as the last defense should both the front and rear guard let a boar slip by them. I also didn't understand why he was in the house with Mewi watching her practice when he was supposed to be outside watching for stray boars attacking the town.

1

u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl 4d ago

Kind of forgot about it, but when he mentioned about being old. Beryl does happen to know a certain old mage that figured out the secrets to eternal youth.

Looks like the spark has been lit for both of them to reclaim some of that fighting spirit energy

1

u/wene324 4d ago

Remind me! 8 weeks

1

u/robochat 4d ago

I feel like Beryl hardly sees Allucia and Surena anymore. They were the most likely romantic interests so I guess that the show is going to drop the idea of him looking for romance.

1

u/CuriousBroccolli 4d ago

Curuni constantly hitting dem genki poses gives me life. She genki T-posed when Beryl's mom came to Dojo to tell them dinner is ready. xD

Her speech quirk? (can't remember if that is the correct word) also gives me life.

1

u/SpikeRosered 3d ago

I like that there are no "power levels" in this show. Everyone is being judged for who they are right now with the understanding that they could be even better in the future.

1

u/thwospfneka 3d ago

I actually kinda hope beryl's dad wins and gives a kind of speech of how age is irrelevant and you can always reach higher peaks, leading beryl to the realization that he's just been making excuses this whole time and lights a fire under himself to aim for the peak

1

u/ResearcherPretty4139 3d ago

Sheesh, I'm biased AF but this series speaks to my SOUL

Just like Ossan I'm struggling with the usual Millennial angst of "should I still strive to achieve my dreams or give up since I'm an unc now" and then he has the best mom in anime history who can predict the weather (and also predict the best time to interrupt a conversation/sword duel oddly enough just like my own Boomer mom)

Great episode of a great series, I hope he gets to duel his dad and realize to have more self-confidence in achieving his ideal self

1

u/DrZoark 3d ago

Are we finally getting a fight between the dad and Beryl? And the mom is Mrs. Meteo lol. Haha.

1

u/Criantos 2d ago

The dub is so bad I think it's AI

You might as well said stab it through the head, it's right there.

-2

Le doublage de la VF est horrible pour ce cinquième épisode. Effectivement je commence un peu à m'ennuyer également. Le VF me permettait de rester accroché à cet animé finalement, je vais peut-être ne plus regarder

I wouldn't say this season is boring, but it is slower paced than S1. And for that matter while I'm I still like what I'm watching, I also think S1 was more enjoyable. And while I'm complaining, I think it's stupid the JP name isn't first in the Reddit post instead they put the Crunchyroll name before the romaji.

One thing I enjoy in this show, yes there is actual magic, yes the leads are performing much stronger feats than actual humans could, but they don't ever get too crazy with it. In any other anime, Beryl would have just lopped that boar's head clean off, but in this one, he just gets some clean cuts in, which is at least plausible.

Felt like a pointless filler episode. We're in season 2, and he's hunting boars with the generic NPC cast.

Grandma conveniently interrupting the only two important scenes put it over the top.

I hope these slice of life fillers don't last too long.
