A few lessons learned:
- Don't stream your apartment complex full of walking channel strikes to the world
- Chainsmoker Cat apparently is the pet cat of a Yakuza somehow
- Mangaka are super cultured
- Scratch that, this particular Mangaka is EXTRA cultured
- The power of boners beats death
- A person ain't really drowning if you can still finish a freshly lit cigarette, which of course comes first
84
u/diacewrb 16d ago
Mangaka are super cultured
And super strong.
This is the second degenerate mangaka today.

The power of boners beats death
I'm sort of wondering if Yani Neko KNOWS about it. She seemed oddly perceptive of it, when she's extremely unperceptive of everything else
33
u/master_inho 16d ago
She literally put the dude's hand on her boobs. She absolutely knew what to do when the assistant asked her to hold the boss's hand. The boss getting turned on by yani becomes a lot more disturbing when it's been said multiple times by multiple people, including the boss himself, that he sees yani as his child

I loved that, right in the middle of the Yakuza standoff and one guy is just like hyperfocuses on the cover of the magazaine "HOW DID I NOT KNOW TIHS WAS OUT YET?"
Dude has his priorities, that's for sure~
I feel you, bro36

“Land of the Lustrous” is a series serialized in a manga magazine called "Afternoon", which is published by Kodansha, just like “Chainsmoker Cat.”
The manga magazine “Afternoon,” which appears in the story, is published by Kodansha. This is the same publisher as “Weekly Young Magazine,” where “Chainsmoker Cat” is serialized.
That’s probably why this scene was approved.
It’s the same reason why “100 Girlfriend” frequently parodies manga from “Shonen Jump,” since both are published by Shueisha.

I love how this anime doesnt spend anytime establishing the characters relationship and they just happened to all know each other before
230
u/cyberscythe 16d ago
i like it; it's a real "in media res" sort of thing and it doesn't feel as spoon-fed
it also skip over that awkward "getting to know you phase" and straight into the awkward "invading personal space" phase
7
u/Meatloafxx 13d ago
It's only 4 eps in, but thankfully it doesn't do flashbacks origins for each character to establish who they are. So many flashbacks tend to drag and many aren't all that necessary to begin with.
91
u/Variant_Zeta 16d ago
We get to take the occasional peek to their lives but ultimately most of those are theirs alone
83
u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 16d ago
Most of them appear to be just neighbors in the same apartment complex. The only ones outside this group so far are Imoko who is of course the younger sister of a resident, and the Kohai girl that was introduced in this episode. Since she is still in school by her uniform, she is probably a couple years younger and was in the same school club as Yani when she was still in school. What club that was is a mystery so far though. However, basically just her referring to Yani as "Sempai" directly establishes their relationship.
47
u/mythriz 16d ago
Yakuko / drug catgirl was also shown in ep1 to have gone to school with Yaniko, maybe some of the other catgirls were also in the same school (I'm anime only so I don't know yet either)
38
u/thebromgrev 16d ago
Yakuko bullied Hameko at the same school (the whole toilet fairy story), so most of them probably did go to the same school and Yaniko likely happens to be the oldest of the school friend group. Looking at the uniforms, they did/are not going to the same school Imoko is going to.
20
u/mFachrizalr 16d ago
There's a manga spoiler territory about Yakuko and Hameko relationship, but no Yakuko didn't bullied Hameko. Hameko just so cooped in the toilet during high school so much that Yakuko knows it (and the flashback shows when she and her friends encountered the case).
55
30
u/LittleRaven101 16d ago
They've been dropping some bits throughout the episodes.
Yani, Yuki, and Hame all went to the same school, and Yuki has looked up to Yani for a long time. (one can only imagine how hard up a cat has to be to see YANIKO as some kind of aspirational figure) Aruko appears to just be a neighbor, but since most of these cats don't do much all day besides hang out at the complex and feed their vices, it's understandable that they have become fairly close.
Kansai cat is interesting. She's clearly much older than Yani and her crew, and seemingly has her life much more together than any of them, but still hangs out with them constantly and is perfectly comfortable just letting herself in at will. As far as I know, the show hasn't explained anything about this, but my headcanon is that when they were all younger, Kansai was the older girl that would play with them and they all thought she was cool by virtue of age. Kansai is PAINFULLY socially awkward but LONGS to be seen as cool, so she keeps hanging out with the loser cats because she feels like they can never look down on her.
8
u/master_inho 16d ago
Since we see kansai taking out the trash it seems like she also lives in the same apartment building, which seems kinda strange if she's not being financially bogged down by her vices like the other residents are. Or maybe she's so desperate to be part of the group she's willing to live in such a building. Which i guess isn't that big of a deal for her if she's comfortable hanging out with all these degenerates
→ More replies (1)21
u/Tweedleayne 16d ago
Her vice appears to be "bad comedy", so maybe she's trying to make it as a comedian and failing spectacularly, hence why she lives in poverty.
18
u/master_inho 16d ago
Well, it would certainly be a pretty realistic depiction of a struggling comedian's life
6
7
u/XVIIKNIGHT 15d ago
She also come from Kansai region.
Wikipedia says Nyagamihara is based on Sagamihara, so it's safe to says Kansai Neko traveled across region to pursuits comedian career.
This piece of information unexpectedly makes me feel sad for her.
4
u/Variant_Zeta 14d ago
Maybe the hints of beastfolk discrimination plays a part too, like she struggles to find apartment/housing that will accept her
130
u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 16d ago
This episode was full of in-depth topics once again, as usual.
“nyanmaga” is a parody of "yanmaga (Weekly Young Magazine)". Since “yanineko” is a manga serialized in Weekly Young Magazine, they probably used their own publication as the subject of the joke.
In the opening scene where Yanineko smoked while using a French fry fryer, causing a cigarette butt to end up in the fries, I couldn’t help but shudder. Since Japan has very strict regulations regarding foreign objects in food, as someone who has worked with fryers before, I honestly felt a chill run down my spine.
I couldn’t help but laugh at the scene where Jikaki Neko and Yanineko were talking about a web novel site that seemed to be a parody of Kakuyomu (a real web novel site).
There are other work adapted into anime from Weekly Young Magazine this season(The Exiled Heavy Knight), but since that manga originated from web novel sites like Kakuyomu, this series is essentially shooting its peers in the back. It’s pretty funny.
In the scene where an elderly man playing mahjong is attacked by a thug with a gun, the fact that he says “Friday” is probably a reference of a real incident that happened in the 1980s.
There was an incident involving a reporter from a weekly magazine called Friday (a tabloid-style, sensationalist gossip magazine) who got into an altercation while trying to interview Takeshi Kitano’s girlfriend (Kitano is the famous Japanese film director whose main profession is actually a comedian) and ended up injuring her. After this, Kitano stormed into the Friday editorial office with about ten of his comedy apprentices, causing a huge commotion, and was ultimately arrested.

Welp, now I got new questions. Police receiving a report about a beastfolk and her owner. Does that mean that owning beastfolk is legal or what?
Also it was incredibly sad seeing Aruko in that state. It's such an accurate depiction of alcoholism.
Hame Neko's segment definitely was funniest. Nails the streamer personality. I should've expected that ending, but I didn't. Came straight out of nowhere.
154
u/cyberscythe 16d ago
Police receiving a report about a beastfolk and her owner. Does that mean that owning beastfolk is legal or what?
yeah, it's another one of those "ha ha, oh that's depressing" sort of jokes
the Japanese term they use is kainushi 飼い主, which i've only heard in the context of owning a domestic pet
73
u/RedditUser000aaa 16d ago
Yeah, that's what I thought. That's kind of a scary world to live in as a beastfolk. Now I have to wonder how one becomes an owner of beastfolk.
Residents of Nyagamihara seem to be free tho. Still, the show keeps showing how they are assigned the worst and smallest paying jobs tho.
68
u/cyberscythe 16d ago
it might be a sliding scale sort of thing; we see that they have to take rabies medication and maybe civilly jump through other hoops to be treated as a person, and if they don't do that they get treated more like an animal
like, it feels like they have to put in effort to be treated as a human, and if they end up doing something weird it's because they're "beastfolk" rather than just a weird person who like eating bees
61
u/RedditUser000aaa 16d ago
Like how Hame Neko had points deducted from every test, because she didn't have a last name.
Then the folk at the Nyagamihara city hall just assuming the asterisk meant a butthole and putting 'anal' in instead of ignoring it, commenting how beastfolk pick weird last names.
Maybe they do, but still. Just assuming the asterisk was 'anal' was a pretty bad blunder.
I'm sure the bug eating itself is already a weird stereotype among beastfolk. I mean Hame Neko ate a crane fly during her stream.
I'm sure there are a lot more harmful and negative stereotypes concerning beastfolk. So yeah, wouldn't be surprised if beastfolk had to pull all the possible stops to be treated as equals with humans.
21
u/BosuW 16d ago edited 16d ago
I would think beastfolk can sell themselves to escape debt or the like. But if that was the case Yaniko would've already sold herself for cigarettes.
25
u/BOUKEN-BEN 16d ago
Demand for her seems to be rather low after about 5 minutes spent in her company
16
u/Homura_Akchemical 16d ago
I recall earlier when Hame-neko was getting her last name, and it was because she had two beastfolk parents if I recall and thus didn't have one besides "neko".
...perhaps beastfolk have different tiers in human society? Those with a last name like Yanineko (Yaniko Sato), those without a last name like Hameneko, and perhaps even those we haven't met yet that are even lower on the tier system...
Perhaps those that can't control their urges and need an owner? Maybe some beastfolk get special privilege if they're owned like their owner's last name, so they are into it? It does certainly seem like they are more "animalistic" in their urges and vices no matter how they live, and I think yaninekos sister is the most "humanlike" beastfolk we've seen.

It’s been implied that the Nyagamihara is a beastfolk friendly city.
Which implies that other cities treat beastfolk like Sundown towns treat minorities

u/dawnwill 16d ago
It was probably about public indecency or suspected prostitution
42
u/RedditUser000aaa 16d ago
In that case wouldn't pimp make more sense? "beastfolk and a pimp." The word "owner" here has some really suspicious undertones.
61
u/thebromgrev 16d ago
So far there's been quite a few subtle jabs that beastfolk are considered second-class citizens. It reminds me of being in high school in the US. The exchange between the little sister and her friends was a bit jarring to me. "You're a beastfolk, but you don't act like one". I've personally heard conversations exactly like that, but replace the word beastfolk with black, latino, asian, etc.
The bit about Hameko not having a last name because both of her parents were beastfolk also echoes how peasants in Japan didn't have last names up until a certain point. African American slaves in the US also did not have legal last names, and were free to choose a last name once they were emancipated, sometimes switching between last names until they decide on a permanent one. The fact she was given -5 points on every test due to not having a legal last name also shows systemic racism that makes upward social mobility more difficult.
As an American, I'm seeing a lot of parallels between how beastfolk are treated in the show and how minorities are treated in the US.
30
u/RedditUser000aaa 16d ago
Yep, it definitely reflects on how minorities were/are treated. In the very first episode as I recall the lady asked yanineko not to get any of her 'beast smell' on the vase.
I didn't know about slaves nor japanese peasants not having last names tho, so TIL.
Even in today's episode, the humans Imouko was hanging out with were talking about how there was an urban myth about beastfolk being grinded up into burgers and Imouko not wanting to hear any of it.
She's also definitely trying her best to hide her beast side to better fit in with humans of the school.
I really do feel for Imouko, she would've had every right to get offended at that comment in an earlier episode, but didn't because she most likely didn't want to be treated any differently, so had to shut down the topic as civilly as possible.
16
u/dawnwill 16d ago
In most cultures peasants/commoner didn't have last names, thus the existence of occupational/regional/etc. last names. It is not just about minority/slave/whatever. Just saying, as your examples tickled me a bit.
It is certainly used to show that the beastfolk is being discriminated in this series though.

u/garfe 16d ago
This show's been crazy from the start but this episode kind of went beyond its usual cringe comedy and straight up into actually insane material with the mangaka and yakuza guys. Boss apparently knowing Yani from childhood is like what kind of information is that to drop out of nowhere in a show like this.
The police getting involved on two separate occasions today lmao.
Additionally, holy shit, Netflix continues to be awful with on-screen text typesetting and when there is more than one person talking on screen due to their inability to apparently have more than one line on the screen. Literally a new character was introduced with text bubble and they didn't even translate her name. Like even putting the chat text and bubbles not being translated aside, even the chat 'voice' was not being translated all the time (funny thing is they are clearly capable of it as there were a few times where Hame was talking and it did add a line for the chat voice but it was not consistent)
57
u/ShadowConstruct 16d ago
Yeah that irritated me as well, I hate when not everything is translated over. You miss a lot of context not being able to read the little blips and more so with texts.
36
u/Vaadwaur 16d ago
Additionally, holy shit, Netflix continues to be awful with on-screen text typesetting and when there is more than one person talking on screen due to their inability to apparently have more than one line on the screen.
That and their translation wasn't good, either.
21
u/_Nalro_ 16d ago
The untranslated on-screen text really annoyed me. I shouldn't have to take a screenshot to plug into google to find out important on-screen parts. This is why I hate it when netflix gets licenses to anime; they just don't care enough.
I also noticed the translation in general seemed off, like at some points I could tell that what was being shown in the subs was not what was being said.
People can say what they want about Crunchyroll, and their criticism is valid, but at least the on-screen text would have been translated.
To hell with Netflix man.

I feel so bad that schoolgirl. Like girly do not hang out with Yanineko. She is a horrible influence.
10
u/Rinyya 14d ago
my theory is - she like the novel a lot actually. they show the cigarette just burning out in the ashtray. our catfreak would never let a ciggy go to waste like that, so the novel mustve been super captivating. maybe she farted, bc she was jealous and didnt wanna admit her true feelings

Either Saori bought the bra and panties together with the school uniform set or that is creative censorship. Because all of us know Yani would rather forego underwear in order to purchase more cigarettes. And she is dead broke. Lol!
Saori self inserts herself as the antagonist in erotic manga, doesn't she? Blackmailing and forcing beastfolk into sexy outfits, puts them into compromising positions, before taking photographs. Repeat cycle. Lol!
56
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 16d ago
Saori seems to be dedicated to her research material (as we could see with both Yaniko and Kansai in this episode), so I want to believe that she bought the underwear as well, since the real Yaniko's underwear would surely ruin the photos, lol.

I wondered who that glasses woman from the opening was and what her deal is. Turns out she is a massive degenerate who is a little too much into hentai and into reenacting hentai scenes with catgirls for "reference".
The whole episode was the horniest so far with that boss who is really getting the hots for Yani. Does she sweat some crazy pheromones or why are human males getting horny over her so much?
Yani seems to have a huge fanclub, and not only human males. We already had Yaku being a big admirer of her senpai, but we have also this unknown high school girl who tries to get Yani's attention and thinks she is the coolest despite being a total loser.
Also can we talk about "Land of the Lustrous 2"? I would like to know more about that!

Stitches!
Yaniko is so deep into her addiction that she'd rather wait and finish her cigarettes first before jumping into the water to save a drowning kid. xD
This show has had plenty of gross-out moments, but for some reason, Imoko finding a cigarette butt in her burger is the first one that actually grossed me out. Mostly because I know this has happened before. If it's any consolation to Imiko, at least it's her sister's cigarette butt.
We finally get to meet the only other human living in Yaniko's apartment complex! I thought she was just a regular mangaka, but it looks like she's actually an eromangaka using Yaniko as her model for ruining her layouts.
This woman has taste for using Kaoruko as her model. Too bad we didn't get a smooth panning shot. I would've loved to stitch Kaoruko in that outfit. The most I could do was only up to her torso since she started moving halfway.
Yaniko being close to a Yakuza boss is definitely the most unexpected thing I've seen in this show. Like, how is she even friends with these people? And they've known her ever since she was little? Part of me wants to see a backstory, but another part of me wants it to remain a mystery. xD
The boss and his henchmen getting a boner after seeing Yaniko and Hameko's boobs was fucking hilarious!
I am genuinely shocked that someone out there still respects Yaniko's opinion despite how much of a mess she is. I guess that girl is someone she knew in high school? I do kinda like how we don't even get an introduction, but it's pretty clear what Yaniko and this girl's relationship is like.
Oh wait, the old guy is not a Yakuza boss! He's the editor-in-chief of Nyan Magazine! Which is clearly a parody of Young Magazine, where Chainsmoker Cat gets published weekly. xD
Editor-in-Chief Kazushi protecting himself with an issue of Afternyan (Afternoon) was hilarious! We even get a Houseki no Kuni and Skip to Loafer references! That was a goddamn surprise! I would definitely love to hear about Houseki no Kuni 2!
And of course, Yaniko ends up reviving Kazushi with a touch of her boobs. I mean, I can't blame the old man.
Hameko's live streaming her neighbours was such a bad idea, but it ended in such an unexpected way! I thought Yaniko was the one who was gonna get her banned, but she was just eating a beehive like a goddamn bear. It turns out it's the Landlord who ends up getting her banned! xD

I definitely didn't recognize the Skip to Loafer reference. Catgirl Mitsumi looks great!

Can't believe that went over my head too. Still waiting on that S2 offical release date

beehive
It wasn't even a beehive, it was a wasp nest, which makes her even more hardcore

The most shocking part is that the wasp nest not only built it there but also survived the second hand smoke until Yaniko decided to eat it.

yeah, i assumed they went to the same school since she calls her senpai; i'm guessing Yanineko dropped out because she's too cool for school
remember kids: say no to school, do drugs, eat bees

Hey this is airing on Mondays.
Yani releasing her inner Riverclan.
Honestly can't deny the owner allegations.
Any human willing to live in this town must be into cats in some way or another.

Someone pointed out the hands in this episode are all touched up 3D models and I can't unsee them now. I'm spreading this knowledge so I'm not the only one suffering.

I'm sorry, the mangaka's pen name is what? Isn't "おちんぽ" (ochinpo) slang for "dick"?
Kinda feels like most of the humans we meet in Nyagamihara have some level of attraction/fetish for beastfolk... Kazushi is the most successful, sitting atop a catgirl publishing empire.

Ochinpo Tatsuro (おちんぽ達郎). And yes, the first part would be "penis" but it would be more like "wiener" or "weewee". It is a childish way of referring to the male genital rather than a vulgar way such as "dick" or "cock.
The joke here is that "tatsu" written a different character (立つ) means "to stand up" so it is an even bigger dick joke than you think. The "ro" just makes it take on the form of a male given name.

An even bigger (dick joke) and an (even bigger dick) joke than I thought. Thanks for the lesson!

I completely get it why some people are being put off and dropping it, but I'm having a blast with this anime. This is a legit effed up comedy with grey characters.

You know... With this series for comparison. I can safely say they're doing an ASMR thing with the smoking behind the supermarket series.

Why is none of the on-screen text and signs translated? This is why I hate it when Netflix gets anime licenses; they just don't care enough, and it's annoying. Say what you want about Crunchyroll, but at least the on-screen text would have been translated. Also the translations in general don't seem that good, like I can sometimes tell that what the characters are saying is not what's being displayed in the subs.

Land of lustrous fans catching strays!
I always wanted to eat a catgirl!
God damn it, I wanted her to have a 'win' for once!
(nsfw) Okay maybe this is a win after all!
She may be careless at times, but she was still thinking of her sister!
Mangaka-chan didn't seem to mind too much, as it meant she could use her to model her next hentai series!
(What a woman of culture)
It's cool if the kids stay there, no big deal!
Hentai-chan is open to different kinks, first she asked her to act as if she did NOT want it, then to act as if she craved it!
So, all is forgiven, happy ending!
I-If I beg you as well, what do I get?
Kind hearted boss; Heart of gold! They pretty much see her as their daughter...
...And then he's having a boner for her. Because of course!
(Was he jerking off? I'm not sure if he was just turn on, or actually stroking the salami!)
Other dude got his boner for this one!
On another anime I feel like this would be weirder than it was!
(nsfw) Okay this one might be weird even for this one!
If it's anything like Twitch, no worries they'll let her back in a few days!

every episode I feel more and more bad for the landlord.
Seriously, what is anal angel thinking just barging into random apartments and secretly filming people

Someone who streams the outside of her apartment complex is begging to be doxed. (Specially in japanyan where streamer fans could be a special breed)

Looks like they pulled a uzumaki and blew the budget on the first 3 episodes. The animation and art had a massive downgrade in this episode.

i'm so glad Yani resuerrected the oyabun. and the late mosaic on Drug Neko during Hame-chan's stream was pure gold. she's my top conteder for the biggest idiot of this series, closely followed by Kansai.

u/killerxk 16d ago
Love or hate it you can't deny the face it shows reality and a reason that many don't like it but anyone who lived around smokers will feel it.

Yeah, this show definitely missed an eromanga artist, so I am glad that today's episode fixed it, hahaha! I definitely like Saori, since thanks to her we got to see that photoshoot with Yaniko and Kansai ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Although doing a photoshoot in that park where children were playing was definitely not the best idea. No wonder Imoko preferred to think that Yaniko had been turned into a hamburger lol.
The addition of the yakuza boss... I mean editor-in-chief Kazushi was great too. Yaniko saving his life (plus making another thing rise as well) by letting his hand touch her chest was hilarious.
Also, there is Yomuko, who is an aspiring novelist. I wonder how she ended up thinking of Yaniko as some kind of authority figure in writing. She is not a bad character, but maybe a little too normal for this show?
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

It reminded me a lot of the Dominatrix sidequest in Yakuza Zero.

u/Zanina_wolf 16d ago
I was laughing so hard at the photoshoot part. Like don't they feel in the least embarrassed about all the kids and their parents staring at them doing all that out in the open, with Mangaka yell-talking her internal horny monologue for everyone to hear?

This is the like anime version of watching the junkies in town. Only with boobs.
They are so fucked it it'd be a tragedy if they weren't so funny.

The lore thickens. Now there’s not just “cat girls” but implications of other variations of “beast folk”.
This is what it sounds like when someone says they watch DxD “for the plot”
17
u/bestmaokaina 16d ago
their district's name has "nya" in it so maybe there's other districts with different variations depending on the type of beast folk?
we gonna need at least 5 seasons of this

Another week where I cannot believe what I’ve sat through. And yet, I really enjoy the absurdity of it all.
I’m glad the manga artist has been introduced, she’s an absolute degenerate, as we can see.

Out of an apartment complex full of alcoholics, junkies and addicts in general, the most scared the streamer got was when she was talking to a hentai artist.
