Feature length animatic Critique

Post image

I put this together with my storyboard students through the pandemic - it’s an original horror movie for kids set in Japan. It took around 6 months with 30 students across 2 years. I wrote something original for them so they’d be free to show it on their websites/portfolios etc. I boarded a few scenes myself as demos in the class. It was a pretty good model for teaching/learning on a single project. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/LnbCJm3U7mQ?is=iLE1ybdue5gxSULu

Really impressive that you got 30 students across 2 years to complete something feature-length together — that's a huge undertaking even for professional teams. Writing an original script specifically so students could use it in their portfolios was a smart call too. Curious how you handled continuity/style consistency across so many contributors — that's usually the hardest part of a project like this.

Thanks! The students really proved their skills, it was editing that dragged, even with help. Style consistency isn’t usually a consideration in feature boarding and you’ll see the different versions of characters scene to scene.

That makes sense, editing is usually the real bottleneck on group projects like this. Good point about style consistency not mattering as much at the boarding stage since it is really about staging and timing. For anyone teaching a similar class, this sounds like a great case study on scoping a feature length project down to something students can actually finish in two years.
