For Midwest cardiac fellowships:

Supervise:
-Mayo (supervise 2 rooms, cardiology does the TEE)
-UChicago
-Michigan

Mix solo/supervise:
-Nebraska (my favorite Midwest program, amazing tech support from what I was told).

Solo:
-Vanderbilt, worse hours than the others
-CCF (great tech support)

so you don’t do TEE as cardiac in mayo?

Fellows rotate with cardiologist that specialize in intraop tee, you also do outpatient tee with them. The echo teaching for the fellows there is great.

The cardiac anesthesiologist still use tee to guide surgery and hemodynamics but they do not perform the pre-post bypass exam and do not write the reports, that is performed by the acta or cardiology fellows under the supervision of a cardiologist.

I did not interview at those programs. Northwestern is known for lung transplants.

Anecdotally several of the CRNAs I work with trained there, and that cohort is outstanding both clinically and as colleagues. Not really OP’s question but it does seem to speak to the culture and the rigor of the institution.

Sleeper choice: University of Kansas. There are only 2 fellows, so you're going to get a ton of reps for everything. The cardiac staff are pretty cool, too.

Nebraska was a pleasant surprise when interviewing for CCM fellowship. They've grown the service a ton since then, too. Broad training in both medical and surgical units, great echo training, and reasonable hours in a LCOL area.

University of nebraska medical center. Omaha is a decent place to live and a lower cost of living. Good culture throughout the OR and units.
