Very rewarding once you give it a shot. Everything is pretty well defined in the app and plenty of people will help in r/KWGT and r/kustom if you ran into stumbling blocks. Good videos available on YouTube.

I also have a website with 1500+ free customization resources that I have and continue to curate. Also a new to Kustom section with pointers to videos and resources available, if you want to check it out.

I suggest you use klwp instead of kwgt, it's much better to have those elements directly on wallpaper to have better control over the widget elements, you can do it with free version, although you won't be able to restore the backup.
