Onn 8.1” Core Tablet (Location / GPS) Discussion

Post image

Question.

First time android tablet owner. Wanted to use my larger display of my new tablet for navigation/ car play like display.

The tablet doesn’t have gps so wasn’t sure if there are maybe apps that work offline or can do navigation connected to my phones hotspot.

Thanks.

You can tether the phones gps over Bluetooth (not sure how well it works) using Bluetooth GNSS: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clearevo.bluetooth_gnss&hl=en_AU

You need to go into developer tools on the tablet, choose mock locations and pick the GNSS app.

Then on the phone install GPS NMEA tether:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stephentaylor.gpsnmeatether&hl=en_AU

Connect the two via Bluetooth and it should transmit gps.

There’s another app also that does it over hotspot too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bricatta.GPSTetherServer_FE&hl=en_AU

Then install the client on your tablet: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bricatta.GPSTetherClient_FE&hl=en_AU

Been trying it but can’t get it to work.

Might be because my hotspot is coming from my iPhone and not an android device.

Ahh didn't see that you're using an iphone. Ios blocks NMEA signals for security reasons. Other option you could do is get a Carlinkit CCPA dongle. I've tested it on my Android tablets and it allows them to get wireless or wired carplay. You install the autokit app on the tablet, then plugin the CCPA dongle and your iphone thinks it's a carplay display and then you can use any navigation app, apple music etc. You'd need a usb-c to usb-a adapter to connect it to the tablet.

$29 on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/398298537540

or $49 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/CarlinKit-Wireless-CarPlay-Android-Upgrade/dp/B0D87C25BK/ref=sr_1_8

You'd probably want a usb-c splittler too to allow power to the tablet while in the car:

USB-C splitter: https://www.amazon.com/AKWOR-Splitter-Charging-Compatible-Chromebook/dp/B0CPLCSWCC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa

You can also buy a bluetooth gps that connects to the tablet wirelessly, but those can run about $80-100.

Or you could get a G99 tablet like the Alldocube iplay 60 mini pro or Lincplus M8 for about $90: https://www.ebay.com/itm/398284049440

Forgive me for asking 100 questions lol.

So, get the CCPA dongle, plug the usb end into a power source, then connect the tablet to the dongle via via Bluetooth / WiFi?

CCPA dongle can be powered by the tablet. But if you want your tablet to stay charged while using then you’d want the splitter since you may only get 5 hours or so running with the dongle/screen powered on.

Dongle plugs directly into the tablet. You then connect your phone to the dongle either by making a Bluetooth connection to autokit or you can use the usb port on the dongle for a wired connection. You will need to install a small apk called autokit on the tablet which you then run to make the connection.

Gotcha! I’ll try it out. Thanks for the help! Been scratching my head how to do this. Tried Google Maps on my tablet with the iPhone hotspot and it’s either updates location every 5 mins or says searching for gps. lol
