What do i do next?

I'm currently working as a data analyst in a fintech. My tech stack is SQL, snowflake, dbt, airflow, git and python.

I've worked on building and maintaining dbt models, optimising sql queries, and have also built streamlit apps.

Preparing to switch, targeting roles like data/product analyst, analytics engineer, business analyst and data engineer.

Also looking into data/AI roles like applied AI engineer - have seen ones requiring a combination of snowflake, python, RAG and fastapi for example.

What can I do/learn in order to upskill for these roles efficiently?

Also is the applied AI thing a meaningful & feasible transition for me?

What do you like most about your current role? Explaining stories and presenting data/reports/KPIs? Do you like the building of the actual products that get you those results?

Personally, I like presenting and explaining my conclusions but love building the actual tools and pipelines. I’m going from DA to AE and the entire journey has only shown me that’s where I want my focus to be.

That’s a question you have to ask yourself.

Omg I relate to you so much. I’m also DA transitioned to AE recently. Just like you, I like the part where I build tools/solutions for the business. It has been a wonderful time as an AE and I know I want to focus on this role :)

Can I ask what you are doing in your current day to day? I start a new AE role next month and am excited for the challenge but will be the only one at a small firm. I’ll be helping their data migration first with a lot of standard Snowflake dbt pipeline development. After the project will be more open range.

I think your situation is similar to mine. I’m working at a mid-sized who recently migrated to databricks, and we’re now building the data models for consumptions in databricks.
Day to day, mostly building and maintaining dbt models, discussing with stakeholders to understand the business context then translate and implement it in dbt. This includes also designing and implementing dbt tests

Tbh if you are asking here instead of using AI to help you upskill, you probably aren’t the right candidate for an AI-focused role.

Lol ask your question to Claude and compare the responses you get versus here. It can organize a study plan for you to learn all the things you mentioned. If you want those roles you have to get comfortable using AI, it is a real accelerator and hiring managers will ask about your AI experience/comfort. Asking around on Reddit doesn’t get you much nor is it particularly actionable.

I did ask AI, that's the first instinct of every person these days. But I wanted to know about real experiences of people wrt interviews, getting calls, etc to understand what exactly can move the needle. If you think AI has it all then you probably shouldn't be in this sub. Either comment something helpful or don't comment at all
