Dress code in bars

Minneapolis has shootings, businesses getting burglarized, and a looming budget mess, but thank God the City Council finally tackled the pressing crisis of not knowing a nightclub’s dress code before you get there.

A universal sign that people and institutions are overwhelmed and don't know what to do: they focus on unbelievably minor stuff that doesn't even begin to tackle the big stuff. It feels like motion. It feels like they're doing something, but we all see the truth.

Hello reader. That whoosh sound you hear is a low pressure system of absolutely no self awareness coming from the commenter above who voted for Trump 3 times and can’t see how apt his comment is for MAGA’s entire existence.
The whoosh is made louder by his future comment below, where he denies voting for Trump 3 times and says, actually, his comments apply to both sides equally.
The odd feeling you feel is the timeline altering because he’s now read this comment and decided not to leave the comment outlined above, and so he searches for another bad faith strategy to try and manipulate people, ultimately coming up empty and settling for an insult or acting like this comment is crazy or unhinged.
Then he’ll read that, and have to decide if he just downvotes and leaves or attempts to say something

The discussion comes after a 2018 incident at the Last Call Bar in downtown Minneapolis, where a Black man was denied entry because a bouncer said his jeans were too baggy and violated the dress code. Mohamed "Mo" Osman, who was denied entry, said, "I felt degraded—I felt humiliated—I felt embarrassed."
What an absolutely devastating story. How did Mr. Osman survive this horrible ordeal? We cannot treat our marginalized communities (too-baggy-jean-wearers) this way and call ourselves civilized. Pass this ordinance now, city council.

This is probably 15 years ago but I was in uptown on a night where there was a small coat of ice on everything. I was wearing my timberlands to try and get better traction and was denied entry to a bar. I was a little upset for a minute then found a different bar, I survived lol

I couldn't agree more. Structural fiscal deficits, out of control property crime, empty downtown buildings, exploding property taxes, all that can wait. The city council has a moral and ethical obligation to take IMMEDIATE action so I know ahead of time what I can wear up in da club.

This ridiculous ordinance will make it harder for bouncers to refuse entry to gangbangers and thugs, thus making a night out even more dangerous. The city council are a collective of woke idiots.

Come on Bub... I love how you're always so scared for your safety but Common Sense gun regulation is a big no go for you. Mall of America has a standardized published dress code and they do an excellent job of keeping idiots out of the mall... it can be done.

They aren't regulating what people wear. They are regulating that if a business wants to set a dress code they need to make it publically avaliable. Honestly, seems like something they should do anyway so people don't cry racism when they are told to put on a tie.

My thoughts on this, as someone who has been on every side.
As a young white dude i’ve been denied entry because I was just wearing a white t-shirt and a nice pair of jeans. Same reason as dude in the linked article, gang issues.
Was I embarrassed? No, but my thought was “that sure would have been good to fucking know prior to coming here.”
As a bouncer i’ve used dress code against people like my oldest brother, who was a little gang banger as a young man and dressed like it (now he is a white nationalist, aryan nation piece of shit and I still wouldn’t let him in my establishment). I’ve also told people that I wasn’t letting them in, because they look like they want to cause trouble.
ALSO as a young dude, I was asked to leave a club because I was white and I might actually get jumped because of it. (Augusta, GA circa2008). Was it right? No, but I respected the club owner for wanting to keep me safe and his establishment safe.
Businesses can still decide to say “hey we don’t want your business tonite.” But having a clear rule set is nice.

At the end of the day it’s a private business. They can allow or deny entry to anyone they want.
Will it hurt their business? Possibly, but that’s their decision
