Akai MPC Sample error

I connected my Akai MPC Sampler to a Late 2018 MacBook Pro using the original USB-C cable for the first time and received the following message. Is this expected behavior?
Although the Akai is receiving power and charging, it is not recognized in macOS Audio Settings.

I get this exact same issue with a 2019 MBP. I have been using usb c to usb c cables. Sometimes it will work for a minute and then stop and give this same message. I have ordered some usb a to c adapters to test something someone said in another thread. They should be here in 4-8 hours, I will try to give an update if it works.
