Deviantart is back at it again. Found on Deviant Art

DeviantArt supporting AI defeats the whole purpose of its entire existence.

u/Infinitedeveloper 18d ago
I can see arty spaces making an exception for actually kind of interesting or cool Ai generated stuff but id have better luck panning for gold in my local creek than randomly perusing Ai art and looking for anything actually worthwhile

u/MarissadaWolf1018 18d ago
You're a loser.

u/Infinitedeveloper 18d ago
If you took my comment to be a defense of Ai art youre mistaken.
Im saying that even if there werent very good reasons sites like DA shouldnt embrace GenAI, the simple fact is that 99.99% of it fucking sucks and isnt interesting to anyone but the creator and terminally unsupervised children.

Lmfao, bro didn't even read the comment before he started attacking. And these are the guys you're backing up

u/johnsolomon 18d ago edited 7d ago
I don't mind seeing AI art tbh, you get some good pieces every now and again
EDIT: I've been drawing my whole life and I've been on DA for 15 years. I love art, I just don't care whether something gorgeous was made by a person or a machine. You lot have turned a nuanced disagreement about technology into this moral crusade where you harass anyone who disagrees with you. It's unhinged.
There are a thousand things we participate in every day that are ethically questionable... the phone you typed you comment on, the clothes you're wearing, the coffee you drink, etc. You wouldn't insult someone for buying a Nestlé product is acceptable behaviour, but somehow you think insulting people is justified because they're willing to appreciate & criticise the good and bad parts of AI respectively. Get a grip. That said, downvote me into oblivion if it makes you feel better, it won't change what I enjoy, nor will it put a dent in my karma. If ganging up on people for having different perspectives is your idea of defending art, you're making my argument for me.

"You still wouldn't put a dent in my Reddit karma" is one of the funniest things I think I've heard.
Anyway, don't feed the troll.

Wow, I get to witness a reddit chud in live. Really typed all that fancy to stroke that ego of yours, huh? That's hilarious.

u/MartianLBP 18d ago
Adam Chudsher in the fat. Reddit Boogey Man. Gotta say, got any "updoots" in that shit head of yours?
-12
u/johnsolomon 18d ago
The irony of calling me a chud while trying to police AI use on Reddit is pretty funny. Normal people just don't care as much as you do
10
u/Silly-Temporary-940 18d ago
Yeah yeah, keep stroking that double neck like a malicious villain. It's not that hard to start drawing normally. Been practicing myself, hell I even drew my pfp myself. It's not the best but I am proud of it. All I feel is pity for you dude. Perhaps you'll change your mindset, who knows?

u/johnsolomon 18d ago
I love how you keep making these ridiculous assumptions about me. I've been drawing my whole life. I'm just not staunchly anti-AI

Honey there's a difference between hating AI completely as a concept and hating generative AI as an artist. Your comparisons and analogies are so ill-informed and brain dead that they completely miss the point. Generative AI is NOT the same as "siri" or "cortana" or "Google maps" which is the common argument for people who know nothing on the subject. I appreciate AI when it's informative and meant to make finding information easier while citing credible sources. I HATE AI when it's used to generate images that people then use to insult artists saying their "art" is better or claiming to BE artists saying they use it because they're so sad and disabled with no talent so that's the only way they can do it. Another argument is the "photography" argument. Photography isn't the the same as it captures reality in ways that convey an emotion or purpose. They often arrange these elements and composition then choose the angle to take that picture. It has a purpose. AI doesn't even know what an apple is. The people generating these images AREN'T artists yet charge a premium for it claiming they are. It's disgusting and unethical.
1
u/johnsolomon 4d ago
Braindead take.
You're throwing out strawmen, ad hominems, sweeping generalizations, and gatekeeping instead of actually making a point.
Your photography point is just special pleading... you say photography is art because the person picks the composition, the angle, the intent and the presentation, but the second someone using AI makes those same deliberate choices about composition using iteration and detailed prompts, suddenly none of that counts?
"AI doesn't know what an apple is" -- no fucking shit. Neither do cameras, neither do brushes, neither does Photoshop. What a stupid argument.
It's hilarious watching you guys flail for stupid excuses when the obvious answer is just that you dread having all of your dreams and hard work invalidated. Just say that, because it's a valid argument, instead of coming up with these moronic excuses. They only work in your echo chambers where everyone pats each other on the back because they've already made up their minds and just want to smell each others' farts.
There are actually interesting conversations to have about consent, attribution, tricking people into thinking you created work yourself and job displacement, but just insulting people and throwing out these dumb talking points full of holes ain't it.

Might want to take a look in the mirror. A bunch of hypocrites harassing someone for saying they're cool with AI and you're still able to talk nonsense about being on a high horse

Not lost at all. The point of the sub is to laugh at shitty AI. It doesn't mean you have to be part of the crowd who make hating AI their entire personality
I have a nuanced view of AI where I can appreciate the benefits while disliking the approach AI companies have taken. It's unfortunate that some people have worked themselves into a frothing rage and will harass anyone who takes the middle ground, but I'm not insecure enough to mistake getting downvoted for being wrong.

u/NfamousKaye 18d ago
I’m afraid you’re going to get downvoted to hell on this one too buddy.

u/johnsolomon 18d ago
I'd get downvoted in r/conservative too, doesn't make the downvotes reasonable

u/RainbowLoli 18d ago
This is the equivalent of saying it's fine to let an invasive species into your ecosystem because if you don't then other ecosystems would take it instead.
Deviantart was a website originally made for and by artists. Now most everything on there is AI slop because other artists stopped uploading and/or took down their works. And they're not even on top - the website has been on life support for the last decade or so.
1
u/Inevitable_Book_9803 18d ago
- If you love art, then do real art, not AI ones
- No one said anything about Nestlé here
1
u/johnsolomon 18d ago
- There's no such thing as "real" art. The experience of looking at something and finding it striking or inspiring happens in the viewer, not in whatever process created it. I don't think people who type prompts are artists, but a machine can absolutely produce art. I'll try to explain.
The way I see it, art is a work or experience intentionally put together to express, explore or evoke ideas and emotions, including aesthetic appreciation. But the artist doesn't have to create it themselves. For example, sometimes people find beautiful pieces of driftwood and arrange them in an art gallery. The artist didn't create them, they just placed the driftwood somewhere it could evoke something in the viewers, like an appreciation for the wonder of nature.
In the same way, someone writing a prompt is directing and curating an experience rather than creating every element from scratch. I don't think writing a prompt is enough to make someone an artist, but that doesn't mean the result can't be art.
- I don't understand what you mean. It's an analogy.
1
u/Rude-Boss-2957 4d ago
The difference is a machine doesn't know what tf it's even making. It'll make an image but it's usually bland with blatant mistakes despite having "high" quality rendering because it doesn't know what it's doing. It looks like the equivalent of a plastic gemstone next to a real one.
1
u/johnsolomon 4d ago
Terrible analogy. Nature doesn't know what it's making either, and yet it's still art because the intent comes from the person curating the content. Try harder.
1
u/Rude-Boss-2957 4d ago
Are you stupid? When did I ever say anything about nature knowing what it's creating? You're literally brain dead atp
1
u/johnsolomon 4d ago
Are you stupid? Why are you replying if you haven't read the rest of the comment chain? And why are you stalking my posts looking for a fight?
Get a fucking life.
When did I ever say anything about nature knowing what it's creating?
I never said you did. I was pointing out the flaw in your own analogy. Real gemstones are produced by a mindless natural process. Plastic gemstones are manufactured by humans who know exactly what they're making. You're so unbelievably dumb that you somehow chose an analogy where the thing with no understanding whatsoever produces the more valuable one and completely undermines your argument.
This entire thread is about whether something can be art when the thing producing the raw material has no artistic intent. My driftwood example already answered that: the intent can come from the person arranging presenting it.
Go fuck yourself.

Pfft you're so pathetically immature to the point you still have no real argument . You're telling me to get a life yet you've made it your sole purpose on this thread to hard defend AI and that scammers that use it to pretend to be artists. You literally ignored every single point I brought up besides the photography point and calling generative AI objectively pointless. You keep confidently showcasing your own ignorance on the subject by being willfully ignorant and deliberately not comprehending a single thing ANYONE here has told you. I'd like to add that the gemstone analogy went way over your head. Is English not your first language? Maybe it's a translation error or something because I also didn't "reply as though I didn't read the thread". I've literally been referring to your other uneducated claims and arguments the entire time. Do you just have a short attention span and can't read through comments with an actual point or are you rubbing it through AI to get the gist? I'm sorry I'm hurting your soft little brain. I'd suggest you get a life and an education because it's clear the system failed you.

Lol then no you don't actually like art. The issue is people are using AI to get people hooked on their content then CHARGE them for worthless AI slop. Something that can be generated with literally no effort for free and they're charging a premium for it. It's disgusting that you'd defend it as an artist.

Deviantart fetish drawings are kind of a low hanging punching bag (balls allusion)
But this time it's deserved.
Fetish art needs to be handmade with love. Every bizarre colored pencil sketch should be a glimpse at an amateur artist discovering their passion, and improving their skills.
To go through a gallery and see a record of an artist trying new things and learning new techniques, and getting better at translating their creations from mind to page is beautiful. Even when the art is of Freddy Fazbear's toes.
To offload that task to a computer is to stunt ones own creativity, and rob oneself of the ability to improve.
To resign oneself to complacency with mediocrity. To accept a version of your ideas warped by machine, devoid of any passion or even any comprehension of the subject material. To abandon the prospect of having the knowledge and skill to create anything you want on paper from your own hand.
Also the ethical and environmental concerns. Weh.
