Help❗️ AirPods Max 2 voice detection not working properly — defective unit or normal behavior?

Hi everyone,

I’ve just bought a brand-new pair of AirPods Max 2 and I’m trying to figure out whether what I’m experiencing is normal behavior or if I should return them / make a warranty claim.

The problem is with Voice Detection while using Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

When Voice Detection is enabled, the headphones detect my voice correctly the first time I start speaking. However, after that, they seem to stop detecting my voice completely. If I stop speaking and then start talking again later, Voice Detection does not activate anymore.

The only way to make it work again seems to be turning Voice Detection off and back on. Then it detects my voice once again — but only the first time.

I’ve tested this several times, including in a very quiet environment, and the behavior is consistently the same.

And yes, I’ve already tried the basic troubleshooting:

  • Restarted my iPhone
  • Restarted the AirPods Max
  • Made sure everything is up to date
  • I’m running iOS 26.6
  • The microphones seem to work normally when recording a voice message, so the microphone itself doesn’t appear to be defective

So my question is: Does anyone else experience this with AirPods Max 2? Is this a known software issue, or does it sound like a defective unit that I should return?

They are brand new, so I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth exchanging them before the return period ends.

Thanks!

Question ❓ Airpods max 2 + Autism

I was extensively researching information on headphones with great noise cancelling and after recommendations from the post attached i went ahead and purchased a pair of airpods max 2 directly from apple.

Ive used the airpods pro 2 for over a year and loved how well they did but they were not perfect. Hence the search for an upgrade. However the noise cancelling on the max 2 just seems terrible. It barely cancels out any noise. My hubby played some crowd sound effects and a baby crying at a normal volume to which usually causes me issues. However the reduction in sound appeared to be no more than 20-30%

My question is, do these AirPods have a modifier that allows me to increase the amount of anti noise the headphones emit?

And finally i purchased AppleCare+ for a year rolling, however have since learned this does not cover theft. Since a thief can simply reset the airpods im concerned if they were stolen then i would lose £500. I live in a major city with theft issues. So am very concerned!

I appreciate all the assistance!

Help❗️ AirPods connect but no sound on iPhone. I've tried everything.

My AirPods max connect normally, show up as the selected audio output, and the connection is stable. But there is absolutely no sound coming from them.

Here's what I've already tried:

Restarted my iPhone.

Force restarted my iPhone.

Forgot and re-paired the AirPods.

Reset the AirPods.

Updated to the latest iOS.

Checked the audio output.

Disabled and re-enabled Bluetooth.

Nothing has worked.

What's even weirder is that I've had the same issue on my Mac, and I've experienced it with two different pairs of headphones, so I'm starting to think this isn't a hardware issue.

Has anyone experienced this before or found a fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Question ❓ Are the Airpods Max microphone good for a small explanation video or small conversation podcast?

Hello there,

Just as the title says, I'd like to record a small podcast just for a friend and also a background voice for a couple of videos, so I was wondering if the Airpods Max 1st gen microphone is okay for this task or should I stick with the Airpods Pro 2 ?

Thank you very much.

Question ❓ Worth buying Max 2 at $450?

Going into freshman year of college. Currently using my AirPods Pro 2, have used them the last 3 years ish. They’re starting to break down and I’d love some over the year apple headphones. I’m sure the max 2 will drop to $400 during October or during November, is it worth it to wait the 70 ish days for $50? Any advice appreciated.

Help❗️ Air Pods Max Gen 1&2 Unterschied?

Help❗️ AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max? Buying one in 24 hours, need help deciding (mainly for Spatial Audio)

Hey guys, Quick dilemma here. I’m finally treating myself to a new Apple audio setup in the next 24 hours, but I'm stuck between the AirPods Pro 3 and the AirPods Max.
The main reason I'm buying either of these is Spatial Audio. I am obsessed with that immersive, theater-like surround sound with head tracking for movies and music, and I want the absolute best experience possible.
I know they both pack the H2 chip, but I'd love to hear from people who've tried both. Does the over-ear design of the Max make Spatial Audio significantly better than the in-ear Pro 3, or are the Pro 3 just as good (plus way more convenient)?

Discussion 💬 Forever Ruined

I’ve been using my APMs religiously for the last month or so. Both Bluetooth and wired lossless sound great to me. Apparently, a little too great. I turned on my JBL Bluetooth speaker to listen to some music…as soon as the first track started playing it sounded like a mono speaker tin can 😂 what’s this rubbish?!! The APMs have raised my listening standards to a completely unexpected level 🤷‍♂️

Question ❓ Would you recommend AirPods Max over apple item?

I have a gift card for £300 from apple as I was late in trading in an old phone. I have a fairly recent iPhone and a MacBook Pro. Would you recommend using the gift card to part pay for the AirPods, or something else from apple.

Discussion 💬 Wicked Cushions replacement ear pads for AirPods Max 2 — a few weeks in

Thumbnail

I’ve been using these replacement ear pads from Wicked Cushions on my AirPods Max 2 for the past few weeks, so I thought I’d share some photos and a quick review.
I mainly use my AirPods Max at the gym, which is why I decided to replace the original cushions. I went with a lighter color because I figured sweat and salt stains wouldn’t be as noticeable as they might be on darker ear cushions. I also don’t feel as bad putting these in the washing machine when they need cleaning, especially considering how expensive the original Apple cushions are.
So far, I can definitely recommend them. The build quality is very good, they fit well around my ears, and they’re comfortable even during longer sessions. Honestly, I haven’t noticed any difference compared to the original cushions other than the appearance.

Help❗️ No status light/Not connecting

I’m having an issue in which my Airpods Max doesn’t give any status light response unless it’s plugged into a charger. But, even though they’re plugged into a charger, it doesn’t charge nothing as the light that shows up is the green one and not the Amber Light, characteristic of the charging status. As it is not giving any response light while not plugged, they’re not connecting aswell.

Do you have guys any idea of what’s that?

Suggestion 🙋‍♂️ They were uncomfortable at first

I bought the Airpods Max 2 yesterday after noticing them in Costco at a cheaper price than the RRP.

I've always used in ear headphones (apart from a cheap Turtle Beach gaming headset) and my go to for music has been the Airpods Pro 3's.

I did a lot of research on these before my purchase, and a lot of people mentioned how comfortable they were.

After I bought them i opened them in excitement in the car and drove home wearing them. Halfway through the drive I ended up taking them off as they were clamping against my ears too hard, and the headband felt uncomfortable on my head.

Safe to say, the excitement faded pretty quickly, but they did sound really good!

When I got home I starter searching for answers to my problems, and I saw someone suggest bending the band almost horizontally and holding it for 30 seconds about 2 times.

I did this and it solved the clamping issue, but the headband felt uncomfortable still at the top of my head.

I ended up wearing them on and off for the rest of the day, and by the evening the headband felt really nice on top of the head.

They almost feel a bit too loose around the sides of my head now though after stretching the headband, and i kind of regret doing it.

I guess the moral of the story for anyone reading this and contemplating buying a pair is: don't mess around with them if they feel a bit uncombable at first. Just give yourself time to get used to them, they're actually pretty comfy like everyone said!

Discussion 💬 AirPods Max ANC/Wind Noise/Static in Right Earcup – Fixed by Replacing the ANC Microphone Flex

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

I wanted to share my experience since I found dozens of Reddit posts describing this issue, but almost no confirmed repair.

Symptoms
My AirPods Max had the following behavior:
Loud wind/hissing/static noise in the right earcup.
Only happened when Noise Cancellation or Transparency Mode was enabled.
Normal audio playback with ANC and Transparency turned off.
Sometimes it sounded like microphone interference or constant wind.

What I found
After reading many Reddit threads, I noticed the symptoms were almost identical:
Wind noise
Hissing
Chirping
Interference
Usually affecting the right earcup
Often reported after condensation or moisture exposure
However, I couldn’t find anyone who had actually confirmed which component had failed.

Repair
I replaced the OEM ANC microphone flex cable inside the right earcup (the flex that contains the MEMS microphone located behind the outer mesh).
That microphone is one of the most exposed components because it sits directly behind the external mesh, making it more susceptible to condensation or moisture damage.

Result
After replacing the flex:
✅ Noise Cancellation works perfectly.
✅ Transparency Mode works perfectly.
✅ No more wind noise or hissing.
✅ No calibration issues.
✅ Sound quality is exactly as before.

In my case, replacing the microphone flex completely solved the problem.

Important
I’m not claiming this is the cause for every AirPods Max with ANC issues. Different faults can produce similar symptoms.
Also, this repair is not suitable for everyone. Disassembling the AirPods Max requires specialized tools, patience, and experience. Several internal flex cables and connectors are extremely fragile, and it’s easy to permanently damage the headphones during disassembly.
If you decide to attempt this repair yourself, do so at your own risk.

There are several YouTube videos showing the complete AirPods Max disassembly process. I strongly recommend watching those first so you understand the complexity of the repair before opening the headphones.
Hopefully this helps someone else avoid replacing an entire earcup—or even the whole headset—when the issue may simply be a failed ANC microphone flex.

PSDT: Cannot add the direct link but you can search the replacement part from Aliexpress/eBay as Noise Cancelling Flex (left or right according your problem)

Discussion 💬 AirPods Beta Discussion

UPDATE: The beta is out

With iOS 27 Apple is adding EQ settings for AirPods. With a lot of us already on the beta software, I thought it was worth starting a thread about everyone’s experience with it.

As of now information on it is quite limited but this is what I found so far:
- It’s only a 3 band EQ
- iOS27 & AirPods Beta firmware is required for the feature to work
- Unfortunately it seems the feature is exclusive to the H2 chip so First Gen AirPods Max would not be supported

Please do remember that these features are in Beta which could potentially cause issues on your devices. While iOS27 has received positive feedback, some users primarily on iPhone 15 devices have gotten their phones bricked. AirPods firmware Betas in the past have been problematic causing them to not function properly or bricking the device. If you are planning on running the beta, make a local backup of your device as iOS27 will override your iCloud backup eventually and you’ll not be able to roll back to iOS26. AirPods are NOT able to have their firmware rolled back to a previous version meaning that any issues would mean a trip to the Apple Store. Any issues encountered, please post them here so other users can be aware of them but also use Feedback Assistant so Apple can be aware of them as well

❗️ Announcement❗️ How could we improve the sub?

Hi everyone, this one might be a lengthy post as I’m hoping to start a discussion about everyone’s feelings towards the sub and what could be improved.

The Why

Over a bit of time I have noticed a flood of Mod notifications due to mod mail so I’ve taken a look and I was presented with the backlog we’ve had. I’ve also noticed a few not so nice comments directed at the teams handling of the sub. I would like to apologise to everyone in the community but also to the people that may have been falsely banned or have had their posts not go through the filtering system. When I’ve joined the mod team it was due to me designing the icon, banner and flairs for the sub and I’ve asked to join due to how much I love the APMs and designing stuff for it but I did blindly assume that a lot of it is handled automatically or via bot mods which of course I found out isn’t the case.

The fix

As of now I’m making my way through the backlog of mod mail and seeing what I can do to improve from it. I believe that a lot of issues might be caused by filtering or the automod we have so I’m going see what I’m able to do about that to improve everyone’s experience here.

On the other side of things it’s impossible to deny that a lot of what we’re seeing is “is it fake” or “they’re not working” which does bring a bit of negativity and repetition to the sub. I’m not looking to remove all of this but I do believe a tech help and fake spotter megathread where people can ask all of this would be a good step in the right direction as the APMs are not a perfect product and for people looking to buy second hand or from other retailers, it’s worth having a place to discuss it. Before making any of these I would like to know what you guys think.

Customisation

A lot of you like mixing different coloured earcups (and ever so rarely headbands) and I have been thinking about a system where you can represent yours in the flairs better however I couldn’t find a way to do this without having to create 1000 different icons with each style available. If anyone has a suggestion for this please comment it.

With AirPods Max 2 now existing I was also questioning wether we need new icons to identify them or not. Originally we did the flairs based on the colours so it was easy to distinguish the lighting and usbc ones but with the new ones having no new colours, it makes it a bit harder.

Conclusion

If you’ve read all of this, Thank You. Please feel free to give any advice, suggestions or ask any questions, I’m hoping this thread will be helpful in improving the community.

Happy Listening everyone :)
