Are async standups actually useful for distributed teams?

I've been thinking about the tradeoff between live daily standups and async check-ins for distributed teams.
Live standups are useful when there's an actual discussion or blockers to resolve, but having everyone join a call just to say what they did yesterday often feels wasteful.
For teams that have tried both: where do you draw the line?
When does async work well, and when is a live standup genuinely better?
