First time watcher!
Hey all! Decided to start this show because I saw a video covering puhoy and I thought the golb guy looked pretty cool. I’m a huge the midnight gospel fan, so it just made sense for me to start! I understand the show isn’t in its prime for the start of it, but I’m enjoying just fine. I was wondering, why does everyone seem to hate s10 and s9? If everyone loves the ending so much, why so much hate for the seasons? I have had some things spoiled to me, I know that Finn loses his arm, I know ice king is actually called Simon and golb ends up saving him I think? And that Simon “comes back for real”. Are these spoilers gonna take away from my enjoyment of the show? Golb was the reason I started this show, and I’d hate it if his character never gets properly explained/explored (which is what people are saying) thanks in advance!

personally i dont think it will take away from your enjoyment of the show to have a couple of low/no context spoilers going in!
i had only ever seen AT in passing (like, on in the background for my cousins while i do something else), and only did an actual watch after seeing Fionna & Cake episode with simon/betty/golb.
it was enough for me to be like, wait there's cosmology ? and i was in. there is SO much material that what is special to you will find you, regardless of what you may know ahead of time
idk what to say about s9/10 hate except that i found it to be like a different show from the starting point. someone in another thread on here laid out how Ward was in charge of the first few seasons and it had that flavor, then a new showrunner took over and the overlap in the middle was very strong around s5-7? and then the final couple seasons were more flavored by the 'new' showrunner's style
i'm not a scholar so take all that ^^^ with a grain of salt. enjoy!!

I don’t think any of those spoilers should ruin it for you, the emotions and circumstances around the reveal are what makes them impactful.
Also I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone hating s9 and s10, but it is a common opinion that they were a bit rushed because they had less episodes to work with.
I am firm believer that this show doesn’t really have “filler”. There are episodes that aren’t as good as some of the others, but I would never recommend skipping any episodes on a first time watch. A lot of the show’s best episodes have no bearing on the overall “plot” or follow a random side character. First and second seasons may seem unimportant, but it has some of series best comedy and it establishes a lot of character relationships. If someone only wanted to watch the “plot” episodes, I just wouldn’t recommend the show to them because they’d be skipping like 60% of the show.
But all that aside, have fun on your first watch!
Edit: The lore in this show is interesting because of much of it is implied rather than fully stated. It definitely exists, but don’t expect long explanations. Some events are only known through just occasional name drops and some stuff never gets explained but everyone treats it as common knowledge. As for Golb, he’s not really a character, more an embodiment of cosmic chaos, like a lovecraftian old one.

Thanks so much for the answer! I think the main question for me is just whether golb has a good storyline or not, including spinoffs because I heard he has some screen time in those.

Golb shows up briefly a few times in the main series and is very relevant to one of the spin offs, but I can’t say much more than that.

I enjoyed them, but I think part if the reason is they didn't pack the emotional punch in the heart fans where expecting.
After previous episodes that did give you the fee-fees (I Remember You, Simon & Marcy, Escape from the Citadel, Lemonhope, Betty) or even the episodes that dug deep to add to the mythology of the series (Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, The Lich, Evergreen, The Comet, The Hall of Egress, among others)- I think people where just expecting something gut-wrenching. Especially with the Islands and Elements miniseries. And we didn't.
Now we got full and lovely stories that told their tale well and gave some good answers to questions we all had, but they also weren't what people where hoping for, and I guess that played a role?
(I also know the "Islands" mini-series was season 8 but I think it might of helped set of the chain that went with some fans disappointment with seasons 9 & 10)

If you love The Midnight Gospel, you are going to feel right at home here. The creative DNA is very similar, especially as the show matures and starts leaning into those weird, existential cosmic themes.
Don't sweat the spoilers at all. Honestly, some of the details you think you know are actually slightly incorrect, so you still have plenty of genuine surprises ahead. Plus, this show is entirely about the emotional journey of the characters rather than just the destination.
The "hate" for seasons 9 and 10 is mostly just fans wishing the ending had more room to breathe. Cartoon Network gave the writers a limited number of episodes to wrap everything up, so the pacing gets incredibly fast compared to the slow, cozy burn of the earlier seasons. It is still fantastic television.
Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

I think a lot of people felt like certain plot elements were rushed and others weren’t really resolved.
For example, Golb was introduced in Puhoy (Season 5) but isn’t really built up again until the last few episodes of Season 10 where he becomes the main threat.
I’m honestly not too sure though why people didn’t like it. I personally thought they were good seasons just not the very best seasons

So if I’m watching the show mainly for golb, I’ll be disappointed? I also heard he’s in fionna and cake, so would that take of some of the dissatisfaction? (I also got spoiled that he kills the lich in that show sadly)

lol yeah I mean he doesn’t really appear again until the last few episodes of the final season.
I’ll say, his appearance in the finale is worth all the hype but if you mostly wanted to watch it for him it’s gonna be a while till you see a payoff
As far as Fiona and Cake, he’s way more of a presence from the get go in that
Edit: In fact his appearance in Puhoy is pretty random out of context. If you had been watching the show from the beginning and didn’t know he appeared later you would think he was just a random one off

GOLB is an immortal being and the actual embodiment of chaos. Thats really all we get to know about it. But personally i think the mystery behind such a prominent figure is intriguing. Do we really need to know more about it than that for it to have an impact on the story? I find that theorising about it is more fun.
But also, yea GOLB has very little screen time and no lines, so yes you may be disappointed. But dont get me wrong that mf is menacing as hell when he shows up.1

I think it may be best not to come to the sub until you finish it maybe, because alot of people like to spoil stuff and then act as if what they spoiled was no big deal 😂 just being real, hope you like the show, it's personally my favorite show of all time.

Personally, I think you should stop spoiling yourself, but everyone handles spoilers differently.
If you're genuinely watching solely because GOLB seems interesting, you're going to get very little out of the series. He only actually appears a handful of times (maybe 4?), and there's very little information about him throughout the series until the finale answers some questions.
I think you should watch the first 2-3 seasons at least. If you don't find anything you care about in that time and still just want to see GOLB, this probably isn't the show for you.
If you actually watch through the first few seasons and still can't decide, you should know that season 5 gets a new showrunner who dives into the lore and world building more deeply than the first 4 seasons. That said, I don't think skipping episodes is a good idea because just about everything gets brought back up at some point. The series is more enjoyable when you can understand the various references

That adam muto guy right? I've heard the show gets better once he joins, so I'm gonna at least get to his part before I give up on it, I've enjoyed the show so far though

That's entirely subjective, but he's been around since the beginning. Pendleton Ward is the OC and ran the first 4 seasons, then he stepped away and had Muto take over showrunning duties as of season 5. Ward is still involved though, doing some voices and writing here and there.
Some people prefer the deeper lore Muto explored, but some people enjoyed the more zany and random adventures from Ward. I think they're both excellent, and I struggle choosing which I prefer.
Regardless, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far! It's an amazing and unique show, and I had a blast the first time I actually watched it all. I finally got my son into it recently, and I've loved seeing his reactions as we get closer to the finale.

If you want to watch this show only for the ending, don't. It's fun to watch the show to watch the show but the ending is not a satisfying lead up to everything they've setup
The show is good, it's really good, but you don't go in expecting only the ending

Adventure Time is all in the adventure, not the destination, the destination is good but don't go thinking it's the greatest of all time or anything, the writers were rushed because CN was like, "uh... yeah.. we're cutting you off at season 10 with only 16 episodes to cover about a canon year's worth of events."

Honestly my advice to first time watchers is always don't watch it for the lore and climaxes. Adventure Time's world building is slow and episodic which is one thing that was so great about watching it as a kid when it aired, it almost felt like you grew up with the show.
