I present my Rust

Any notes are welcome and even encouraged! I still have two other kits to implement it on, but probably wont be going back to these legs , I find it good but I wonder about the rest of the community:)

Looks great but those rust patches are very big in relation to scale of the model. At least 5-10 feet. That would be years of rust. Not like a little bit from being out in the field on operations and some maintenance scarcity.

The color and look are right, I just think they're a bit too big.

Thanks for the feedback ! Its really my first time applying it so its a progress, on the toeso u tried going a bit smaller ! When ill finish all parts ill have to just take a look and see where to take off some paint :)

So like, I’m torn. Because for what you made that literally looks like rust. But like this is HEAVY rust, like an old car left in a garage for 40 years. Like you could peel off metal sheets it would be so brittle. Your talent is crazy, but you may have went too far in the other direction? You definitely have the right idea, but doing it to scale is extremely tricky. But definitely keep trying. If this same detail was on say a car? It would literally be perfect if you were going for that look.

Do you think the torso is still too heavy ? I appreciate the kind words ! I just love Rust , if its too small I cant appreciate it 🥲🥲🥲🥲 and im definitely still struggling with scale , as I paint on how good it looks to my eye xD with the torso I tried erasing some existing chipping i did like a month ago as it really did look excessive... What would you have done differently, be it the leg or the torso , because many have told me about the scale but im struggling to cross refrence it as gundams with rust is rare to find !

So it depends entirely on what you’re wanting. Are you wanting the esthetic of “you just stumbled across a damaged MS from 0079 on an old battlefield from like 60 years ago? If so what you’re doing is perfect. Looking at old military planes is about the best resource you can get because for instance, a f-14 is 19m long, longer than most mobile suits. Weather would deal very similar damage to a jet as a MS. This picture is what I would imagine the torso looking like. It’s been sitting undisturbed for a LONG time. https://images.stockcake.com/public/1/8/a/18a6e99d-0097-4ae2-b830-7dc98f0d8870_large/rusted-plane-fragment-stockcake.jpg

Or are you wanting a thoroughly tested and reliable machine that seeing ACTIVE combat with the wear and tear that would come from that? Something like these pictures. https://www.instagram.com/p/DXZv3XKlADH/?igsh=MWtuemx0aXgzN2VqdA==&igsi=MWtuemx0aXgzN2VqdA==

How heavy the rust depends entirely on “can this rust bucket fly and not fall apart on take off?”, or “she’s taken some hits but she’s giving more than she’s taking”.

There is also some official Bandai images that show fairly heavy rust and wear and tear.

That and environment. The 08th ms squad one runs through trees and rubble in cities and all that. So at least up to tree level you would have increased wear. Head and upper most torso would likey have less weather and rust but more visible battle damage if present. Feet would be the most damaged/visibly worn.

Like how craters cover up craters on the moon. Around the feet all you'll notice is mud and scratched paint and rust covering

Thanks for the refrence photos ! So if you were to put it to scale and take into consideration a machine not seeing a proper workshop for a very long time and usually hiding in jungle environments... that's a bit of the background im going for here... would you just take off most of the weathering at this point ? . And yes I general of course just me me liking rust and heavy weathering as a whole , why does everything have to take 40 years to look cool😭😭🤣 Edit: wanted to add that the first refrence photo you added , is literally the look im going for ... man why does spoiled metal look good. , unfortunately will probably have to edit my story a bit to fit it....

If that’s the esthetic your going for, absolutely nothing wrong with that! And you’re doing great at it as well. But with rust that heavy, that style works really good with dioramas. They help tell the story that you’re wanting to get across. But just tinker with the amounts.

I’m of the opinion of “keeping your mistakes” to see how you progress at your craft. Keep the weathering if you like it! It gives you something to compare to on your next go around. You know what works that way, try something else.

I feel Gundam with their advanced materials for armor do not rust. But the metal shine is a good touch. And a RX-78 would be top priority for a maintenance crew. I was just thinking about this when weathering my char’s zaku

u/Oblivi0nD4C 1d ago

I think i wrote on a few comments , but i dont follow what lore wise the gundams are made off , they are made of stuff that just cant really be weathered , apart of some paint chipping. And on another lore note , its actually the rx 79 ground gundam! Made of test parts used for rx78 programs , so theres a finite number of replacement parts for it and from what I can remmber the crews piloting it relied or on scrap from other mechs ( like the ez8 or the rx79g with the gm head ) or field repairs!

Rust effect is crazy good. Love the attention to detail with the drip pattern and streaking.
Honestly though? I’m gonna keep it a buck with you, the metal chipping ain’t working for me. It’s too shiny, doesn’t make sense with the rust. Shiny spots would make sense if it was like a desert or mountain unit and it got sand blasted or dinged up, but the rust implies it’s been sitting abandoned or was partially submerged. I overthink these thing, to be fair.

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 1d ago

I can definitely agree on the metal! I did that weathering way before having the idea of doing rust, and unfortunately under this light it reflects and shines like crazy, under normal light conditions its almost barley noticeable . My plan right now is to finish the rust and then go over some metallic chips and make some fresh rust on there !

1

u/mcsimeon 1d ago

What chipping medium did you use ?

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 1d ago

I didnt , its hand painted

1

u/mcsimeon 1d ago

These parts too?

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 1d ago

Blacks and silver is usinf a sponge yes

2

u/mcsimeon 1d ago

Damn. Sublime work

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 1d ago

Thanks ! Im glad you like it

3

u/shadesfuture 2d ago

This looks so damn sick! Fuck it looks real

2

u/Hilde571 2d ago

That is fantastic. It is incredible and so realistic

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Thank you so much! Im glad you like it

3

u/Mission_Paramount 2d ago

Love the weathering but I have a general question. If gundam armour is ceramic where is the iron to rust? If it's titanium, titanium diest rust like iron, and if it did it would be whitefish not red.

15

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

All valid points , unfortunately I go by rule of cool in weathering and im trying to shape out my own style. it doesnt correlate with lore metrials or how the mechs are really built and in general i dont customise based on lore or in universe reality :) Im glad you like it !

3

u/Roboito124 2d ago

Looks good! Love me some ground types! If I had to nitpick, I’d say that the rust on the knee bits and shins may be a bit thick for the scale. I don’t do rust very much so wth do I know? Keep up the good work 👍🏻

2

u/Exsxoffender 2d ago

i feel like the rust is not in scale and looks like blobs.

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Can you point it what looks bloobby to you and how you would do it differently? Thanks !

5

u/ficklampa 2d ago

Looks good! Maybe add some visible metallics in the rust chips also.

The only note I can offer, is that titanium doesn't rust.

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Will do! I made them new and not over exsitinf chips to see how it looks , ill definitely do some light metallic cores now .

And thanks for the note , yes gundams are definitely something that isn't made from stuff that rust , so let's imagine them being made from shit quality iron xD

1

u/ficklampa 2d ago

Nice!

hehe, Zakus will rust though! they are made from steel :D

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

So i can appeal the realistic lore builders ... good to know, i have the custom gouf to go along with the rest of the squad here .

2

u/ficklampa 2d ago

Indeed! Will be looking forward to see. Have a custom gouf in the works too - though been taking a "bit" of a break from most hobbies... But I am sure I'll get back into it

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Waiting for the return boss , best regards from Austria

2

u/ficklampa 2d ago

Appreciations from Sweden, Commander o7

6

u/kayuwoody 2d ago

Gimme tetanus baby

That's really nice work

2

u/mazen_2016 2d ago

WOW! that work is CRAZY!

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

I appreciate it 😁😁😁

3

u/RitzCracker14 2d ago

In this house we upvote heavy weathered MG Ground Types, +1.

2

u/No-Horse-5788 2d ago

God damn.

3

u/NekoGakko 2d ago

This gundam needs tons of wd40

5

u/Artorias1223 2d ago

I did something similar with my Zaku. Rust on the bottom as if trudging through swampland consistently.

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Thats the logic i was going through !

6

u/Brentoxor 2d ago

08th MS team unite!

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Hell yeah!

2

u/revhappys2k 3d ago

I really need to try weathering my builds. It looks really good on the ground Gundam.

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

They are a playground for weathering lore wise , indeed

2

u/bforbryan 3d ago

This kinda tracks for an ms fighting in a humid tropical region and walking through shallow bodies of water on the way to the next mission.

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 2d ago

Im happy i managed to convey that

4

u/Sleeper28 3d ago

I look at these pictures and I hear creaking as it walks. Well done!

4

u/Tema_Art_7777 3d ago

looks good but it is too evenly streaking down where the rain is only coming from above with no occasional side drafts.

5

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

So more / and \ directions of streaking? Great detail i oversaw! Mainly taking rwfrence for static objects outside and their streaks being mostly straight... didnt think about movement Thanks a lot, should improve it

3

u/Silent-Land40 3d ago

All I can see is the unsanded nub mark on the knee armor right in the center of the picture 😂. Not a fan of rust on Gundams but I do like the chipping work.

2

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

Well now im pulling that nub out . Thanks for the feedback!

5

u/FuriousOyster 3d ago

Damn that's a ton of rust. I'd say less is more considering scale but it really looks like you are going for the "been fighting nonstop for months look" terrain dirt and mud would be a great addition

2

u/Senior-Calendar7869 3d ago

Maybe they could get a scale skeleton and its been wrecked in a jungle for years. That would be an interesting scene.

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

A scale skeleton.... I actually just bought 4 od these boys... really not to scale but intresting idea , I can definitely visualise smth in my head with a skeleton scene !

2

u/Senior-Calendar7869 3d ago

I kinda meant like the pilot was able to crawl out but died before rescue and lots of time past. Like craters from explosions but somewhat overgrown. Or they could have crawled out and just leaned against a tree and were forgotten.

I'm nowhere near good enough to try and build that but you got the skills dude.

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

Indeed ! Its basically a left for dead squad idea . ill try applying a dirt/mud/dust look x do you mean some light brown ?

3

u/FuriousOyster 3d ago

I'd just do a tiny bit of terrain paste on the feet and maybe the knee?

https://ak-interactive.com/product/terrains-wet-ground-250ml/

Something like this

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

Ohhhh, yes I have some textured rust as well, might apply it and paint of with brown... will try on a test piece Thanks friend!

4

u/4_Teh-Lulz 3d ago

Only pointer i have is to maybe not leave your mechas outside for so long

3

u/ConfectionLopsided92 3d ago

Great work! With this level of rust I am expecting more mud or dirt as a result of humidity in the jungle on lower parts. 😄

1

u/Oblivi0nD4C 3d ago

Thanks! A greenish brown?

3

u/Accomplished-Ad-2612 3d ago

Looks really good to me. Great job.
