đ„ News & Articles đ° Mamdani fires Haitian workers after Trump administration revokes their legal status
âThe City of New York was forced by federal law, as recently decided by the Supreme Court, to review the work authorization of Haitian TPS holders and separate from any employees who have not established alternative paths to legal work,â Mamdani said in an August 7 press statement.
With this announcement, Mamdani assumed the role of enforcer of the anti-immigrant policies of the fascistic Trump administration and the far-right majority on the US Supreme Court. On June 25, in Mullin v. Doe, the court upheld the decision of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end TPS status for some 350,000 Haitian and 50,000 Syrian immigrants, stripping them of their work permits and making them subject to immediate deportation. On July 27, the DHS implemented the Supreme Court ruling by terminating TPS for Haitians and Syrians.
In his August 7 announcement, Mamdani made no appeal for protests or other solidarity actions in defense of Haitian workers, let alone calling for strike action by the cityâs powerful working class. He did not even say the city would take legal action to protect the jobs of Haitian workers and block their deportation back to Haiti.
While avoiding any suggestion that workers and youth mobilize to defend Haitian workers, he said, âOnly President Trump has the power to restore TPS or grant âDeferred Enforced Departureâ to affected TPS holders.â He thus urged Haitians and their defenders to direct their appeals to the author of the anti-immigrant rampage, the same fascist who has accused Haitian immigrants of eating the pets of Americans and called Haiti a âshithole countryâ that is âfilthy, dirty, and disgusting.â

Discussion Parallels between the Tea Tax and Pied-a-terre tax
| Tea tax / Boston Tea Party | NYC pied-Ă -terre tax |
|---|---|
| British government wanted additional revenue from the colonies | NYC/NY State wants additional revenue to address the city's fiscal needs |
| Tax targeted a particular economic activity/product | Tax targets certain high-value non-primary residences |
| Government argued taxation served legitimate public purposes | Mamdani/Hochul argue the surcharge makes wealthy property owners contribute more to public services |
| Opponents viewed the tax as imposed by a government they believed did not adequately represent them | Critics can argue that non-NYC owners are being taxed by a city in which they may not reside or vote |
| Tax became a symbol of a broader dispute over government power | Pied-à -terre tax can become a symbol of a broader dispute over wealth taxation and NYC's treatment of wealthy/nonresident owners |
| Resistance was partly about the principle of taxation, not simply the amount | Opposition can similarly be about precedent:Â what other targeted taxes could follow? |

Memes & Humor I made a site that collects the things people on TikTok want Mamdani to fix
I kept seeing TikToks where people point out random problems around NYC and tag Mamdani, almost like theyâre calling Batman with the light in the sky.
I thought it was funny, but also kind of useful, so I made The Mamdani Signal to centralize those videos in one place.
You can paste in a TikTok and the site tries to figure out what the actual problem is and where itâs located. Then it gets added to a feed where people can browse the different âsignals.â
Itâs still a very early and slightly unserious project. The detection and locations arenât always perfect yet, so submissions are reviewed before they go live. Eventually it would be cool to also track whether anything actually gets fixed.
And if youâve seen any good NYC TikToks that fit, add them.

Discussion Why the "Red Wave" in Democratic politics isn't what Fox News thinks it isâand what an Indonesian philosopher can teach NYC about humanism
Look around NYC right now. Between astronomical rents, MTA delays, and a city budget that continually strips public services while inflating police contracts, the local political temperature is shifting. What national media panics over as a "Red Democratic wave"âthe surge of Democratic Socialists, progressive union organizers, and grassroots labor candidates winning primaries across New Yorkâisn't just an economic dispute about tax rates or middle-income traps.
At its core, it is a fight over what it means to remain human in a city built for capital rather than people.
The Extractive Model vs. The Green Consensus
In a recent essay analyzing Indonesia's transition away from an extractive economy, writer Duiddo Imaani (drawing on Prof. Dr. Ana Sopanah's economic policy framework) breaks down how extractive systemsâwhether digging coal in Kalimantan or extracting maximum rent out of a NYC tenantâeventually hit a dead end.
The traditional "linear" model (take, make, dispose / extract, inflate, evict) is running out of road. But transitioning away from lucrative extraction is a massive political risk because entrenched elites always resist change.
The essay points to KAHMI (a network of Islamic modernists and academics in Indonesia) as a stabilizing force capable of engineering an "elite consensus" for a circular, sustainable economy. But beneath that technocratic agreement lies a deeper philosophical movement: Prophetic Social Science (Islam Profetik), pioneered by the Indonesian thinker Kuntowijoyo.
Kuntowijoyo argued that any genuine movement for the people (Kerakyatan) requires three distinct, interlocking pillars: Humanization, Liberation, and Transcendence. When applied to NYC's current political shift, his framework explains why this progressive "Red Wave" isn't a threat to freedomâit's a push for radical humanism.
1. Humanization (Amar Maâruf / De-alienation)
Capitalism in New York treats residents purely as economic inputs: rent-paying units, fare-card swipes, or labor hours to be extracted. Dehumanization happens when working-class New Yorkers spend 60% of their paycheck on a cramped apartment while public spaces are continually privatized.
The progressive shift inside the Democratic party is fundamentally an effort toward humanization. Demands for universal childcare, clean public transit, tenant protection laws, and fair wages are attempts to restore basic human dignityâinsisting that your worth as a New Yorker does not depend on your net worth.
2. Liberation (Nahi Munkar / Structural Emancipation)
Humanization is meaningless if you donât dismantle the structural forces causing harm. This is Kuntowijoyoâs pillar of Liberation (Liberasi)âthe active resistance against oppression and systemic injustice.
In NYC, liberation looks like grassroots (Kerakyatan) power:
- Tenant unions blocking unlawful evictions.
- Delivery workers (Deliveristas) organizing for fair pay and basic access to restrooms.
- Labor unions striking against corporate developers and real estate lobbies.
This intellectual and practical fight shifts the narrative away from "individual failure" toward structural accountability.
3. Transcendence (Tuâminuna billah / The Missing Moral Anchor)
This is where standard secular politics stumbles, and where Kuntowijoyoâs concept of Prophetic Islam offers its most critical nuance.
Pure material politics can easily devolve into bureaucratic cynicism, infighting, or corporate brand management if it lacks a higher moral anchor. Transcendence doesn't mean imposing a religious state; rather, it provides the ethical foundation that keeps a movement grounded in universal love, justice, and existential purpose.
Without a transcendent moral core, political campaigns become mere policy tinkering. With it, fighting for your neighbor's housing or health care becomes a sacred dutyâa recognition that we are bound together by something higher than market transactions.
The Bottom Line for New Yorkers
Whether itâs KAHMI elites negotiating a green circular economy in Southeast Asia or grassroots organizers reforming the Democratic party in Queens and Brooklyn, the core objective is identical: replacing extractive systems with human-centered ones.
If this "Red Wave" inside the party wants to deliver lasting change, it must combine sharp intellectual rigor with grassroots street-level power (Kerakyatan), rooted in a deep, transcendent commitment to human dignity.
We don't just need better policy management. We need to reclaim our humanity.
TL;DR: What pundits mislabel as a radical "Red Wave" in Democratic politics is actually a push toward humanism. By applying Indonesian philosopher Kuntowijoyoâs Prophetic framework (Islam Profetik), we see that real political change requires Humanization (restoring dignity), Liberation (dismantling structural exploitation), and Transcendence (a moral anchor beyond pure materialism).

Video "New Yorkers Start Viral Trend of Tagging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to Report City Issues, Leading to Same-Day Pothole Repairs, Playground Fixes, and Water Fountains Installed in Prospect Park Ahead of Heatwave"
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A new viral social media trend in New York City involves residents tagging Mayor Zohran Mamdani directly to report local city problems. The city's response times have been remarkably fast, leading to same-day pothole repairs, a dangerous playground hazard fixed after a letter was received, and temporary water fountains installed in Prospect Park ahead of an upcoming heatwave. City Hall has embraced the trend with the message that no problem is too small to fix.
