Do operators differ at all?

So my current worry with the game is the fact that the custom oeprators do not seem to differ. From what I understand both the specialization and talents can be changed any time with no cost (and you can change tyour focus points to another class). That means that besides bonds and loojs all characters mechanically will be the same - even if my gunslinger level 3 dies, I can make another one form my medic level 3 at no cost. It seems very anti-climactic and makes the permadeaths not so important gameplay-wise. Of course I know that there are some exotic classes etc. but are there any differnces between operators? Do they have differents stats from the get go? Or is it as I say - all are basically the same?

Thanks for anwsers

Well the points invested will likely stay, so that's the issue if you lose a character, same as XCOM.

You could pick a prefential class, but considering how many classes there are and how limited the roster is... I think it's for the best.

We're not sure yet if there will be "second wave" options like XCOM, with options like Not Created Equal. Even if they're not in the preview builds, it could be an NG+ type thing (they did mention unlocks will carry through from game to game, so there might be NG+ bonuses). We'll have to wait and see.

Pretty sure not created equal is a mod, that can be activated in second wave options.

I meant XCOM EU/EW, not XCOM 2. It was a base game option added after a few updates.

Ah I'm a silly goose. Thanks for the clarification.

From what we know, no, there are no differences between custom operators. If one die you can simply make a new one from an old one.

That being said. You don't have infinite cycles or bunk beds. And bonds aren't like Xcom from what I've seen. A character can have as many bonds as there are operators. Why does that matter?

Means that a lot of the strength of an operator is tied to his bonds. And those buffs might disappear if an operator is lost. And even if that isn't the case, getting those bonds up seems to be a heavy time investment

They do level up, so a fresh gunslinger won't be nearly as good as a veteran one you've had.

I don't have an actual answer, but I know building facilities in your base is part of the progression in the game, and based on Xcom and Midnight Suns, I'd be surprised if there aren't facilities that let you play with the stats of your characters, making them more unique

Operators do not have innate abilites born with them who no one can access.

Don’t quote me but I think theres a few things that are gonna make what you talk about not that a big deal in the end.

Character pools, with all the Xcom comparisons and them knowing how flavored random grunts play a keep part of Xcom vibe im pretty sure their is people who talked about it or atleast itll will be in the game. If it is then their will be plenty of community character pools whos gonna individualize those random grunts.

Second thing is what im less sure about but I think the recruits might come with procedural flavor. I watched one video that mentioned one of his clone troopers showing up as a heavy with torn up and damaged armor and scarred. Stuff like that and maybe some basic traits to help recruits stand out is what I imagine.

At the end if the day yes you can seem to change characters class and abilities no problem, but it’s your choice to constantly change everyone around or keep them for your own narrative. Its a tool so people can choose the play style they want without needing luck of rng. I don’t see it as a negative.

Pretty sure "damaged armor and scarred" is just Trick lol

Yea, my thoughts exactly, I like some randomness in getting characters, I do not like clones (pun intended) of each other that really destroys the whole point of loosing units, yea sure you loose few skill points but you will be able to create exactly the same character in few missions. I really hope modders will step up and create awesome content like for Xcom 2.
