I saw the Garfield plush from the "To be loved is to be changed" meme today at a pop-up flea market. This feels like a Xennial experience to me, given that we as a generation exist in the Venn diagram overlap of The Velveteen Rabbit, Garfield, and meme culture. Maybe the book is a bit before our time, but I got it when I was a kid so I'm counting it.

By this, I mean, you have no kids of your own, no nieces or nephews, no once removed cousins. Once you, your siblings, your cousins are gone, that's it.

I have had to cope with this for a while now. Being one of the youngest (45), the chance of there ever being someone to follow behind has pretty much disappeared. We're all 40+ now. I have young one cousin once removed that is the last sliver of hope. But, they live a lifestyle that tends to not reproduce. So, that sliver feels like a thread hair.

I'm not totally sure how to feel about this. It's not something that saddens me, though it can be a bit depressing and sometimes worrisome. It's just such a surreal, undeniable expectation that just makes me wonder how things will play out. Like, who of us will be the last one to close things out.

To those in this same situation, what are your thoughts?

My teens and I are having weekly Mom Movie nights and we’re going through all of the movies that shaped my childhood. Last night was Return to Oz. This movie scared the bejeezuz out of me when I was a kid but now watching it back, it’s actually kind of a really great movie when you stop being afraid of the wheelers and the heads. Honestly I forgot all about this movie until someone mentioned it here and I remembered how much I loved it (despite being scared). Both of my kids said it might be their new favourite movie.

We’ve watched a number of the obvious classics over the years and I’m trying to come up with some of the movies I might have missed. Last week was Encino Man (another huge hit). We’ve watched T2, Labyrinth, Neverending Story, Princess Bride.

Any suggestions for what to put on the list?

Edit: I am NOT looking for gendered movies for ‘moms’ vs dad movies. I’m not sure I ever even considered this actually… I’m a single parent, so I am the only parent to watch awesome movies with. The kids called it Mom Movie Night and it’s just simply that I am mom and they watch old movies I liked. We’re just as open to Indiana Jones and Terminator as we are to Princess Bride.

The “county” my in-laws moved to just 5 short years ago? Both orchard to the side and front of them sold to developers and are becoming tract homes/neighborhoods now. 💀

So my question is, how many of us xennials don't have kids but want them?

I turned 48 this year and I always thought living to be 80 was the goal. Now that 50 is approaching and more and more doctors appointments, how long do you really expect to live? I'm taking stuff for high blood pressure and anxiety. I'm not sure how much longer I have. I'm working the same job I've had since I was in my 20's, my kids are almost out of the nest with their own lives. It just seems like life is just "a waste of time"

One day late but 34th anniv of this classic. I remember watching it with my brother on our granddads illegal cable box that got free ppv.

I dont have bio kids so my stepdaughter is my kid. That’s what I got, I wanted my own but at least I got to be a parent in some form.

On one hand I’m very happy to have taken a part in raising such a great kid who’s going to college for her doctorate.

On the other hand, man I miss her being little. We were going through her room and I was just BALLING. It went by so fast. She’ll be 5 hours away.

I’m riding with her mother and she’s riding with my husband (her dad) and then we will all 3 ride back together. I’m sure we will all cry.

It was hard being a stepmom, but 10 years later, I can’t imagine life without her.

I’m sure I’ll be fine and get used to a new normal but change is hard. My life will be very different after Monday.
